We've got to remember that magazines and books are heavy and expensive to mail. . . that being said, I think I put in a copy of Mercury 7 and/or Yeager when I had the gift bag. . . lol . . . but seriously, magazines and books are heavy and expensive. The box weighed about 22 lbs/ 10 kg when I shipped it. Think about what you can do to reduce some of the weight and expense.Regards, Garry |

To send from USA to Scotland cost $100.I'll find out a bit more about when I can send it this weekend, If I wasn't going on holiday for 3 weeks I would un pack the box, do an inventory post some photos of what is in there to get some consensus of what to keep and get rid off. |

I'm in touch with Kirsten, du to the fact it was going to cost about £50 to ship and my company was relocating some one to holland they said they would ship it with his stuff to fill the container BUT it looks as though I can't get a straight answer for that. Also I've just had a hard disk failure and been laid up with some flu I picked up in China. Anyway I need to get the box moved so I have decided I will have to pay these silly couriers fees and there was a guy on ebay quoting about £30 so once I get a momment and find out when they can collect I'll send it on its way again. Hope you guys on the mainland will be able to afford the postage back to the USA Once again Sorry for the delay. |

A shame that its taken so long to get the box back on the move. IMHO I think its a bit much to hold onto the box for 10 weeks before shipping it to the next recipient. I felt bad enough about having it for 4 days as I know that some cS members forwarded it the same day they received it. Just my two-pence worth, Derek [This message has been edited by machbusterman (edited October 04, 2005).] |

I actually agree Dennis 10 weeks is a long time but I'm not just shipping it around the corner but internationalI've been hit with a postage bill of nearly $60 which is far less than the $300 that some of the courier companies wanted to charge me, Plus I got the box just before I went on holiday for 3 weeks and unfortunatly I'm also limited to when the wife is working from home to get the box collected. I was going to get my company to ship if for Free as a collegue was moving to Holland at the end of September but this is now December. I must admit I'm very concerned that the cost of posting the box back to the USA is going to be VERY expensive for someone I have been in contact off list with Kirstien to explain the delays etc on almost a weekly basis. Once again I'm sorry for the delay but if you check ebay you will see I'm having to sell some of my collection to pay for postage. And I wish I was joking http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6565703865 or just seach skippyinspace closes in about an hour! Thanks for everyones patience. I'm getting excited, the box of goodies is now only about a year and a half away! :-(Am posting early in the hope that any other Aussies may want to add/remove/look at what is inside so at any stage if anyone in OZ wants to take a peek they can email me offlist and I will be sure to wizz it around then back to me to be resnt to the next person overseas. Should only take a week or two at best then back overseas. This will save it having to come back here for some time along with international postage costs. If everyone is happy with that perspective I think we can run with that for now. Late 2006 possibly if we are lucky. Patience is my virtue. Cheers |

a way making the box lighter, sell (very low starting price) some of it on ebay or on Astro Auctionor list what's in the box for the interest of any takers. the party of interest sends postage coverage to whoever currently have it. hopefully the box size reduce...reducing postage cost til it climbs again. |

I really don't think that ebay or astro auction would be fair..the original idea was to take a few things out, but put things in as well. It would also ruin the anticipation and surprise by what's in there. Auctioning takes away from the whole original idea. By auctioning, it is being opened up to every joe schmo across the world who will get something and not contribute back to the box. Yes, they will have to pay for the items and I understand that the shipping prices are the major issue. But why contract ebay fees on top of it..On the flip side of that, the idea of listing some of items and having folks on collectspace pay the shipping if it's something they want is a good idea in order to lighten the load. Then the box can still be shipped to them and they can still contribute..and by not listing everything that's in it, it can still be a surprise to whoever the box goes to next..and who knows, they may even lighten the load further if there's something there that wasn't listed. BTW the Collins I auctioned was from my collection and nearly made it into the box.I was going to use the money for Aurora but its now going to pay for Shipping instead.I do think an idea whould be before it went back to the USA to get a list made up of what is in the Box and some how come to a consensus on triplicate items what to do. There is what I would consider a lot of Junk in there but it might be up someone else street! I know there is about 30 NASA bookmarks in there will they ever get taken out. The problem is if items are sold who gets the money... The actual issue is we all have put in more items than we have taken out! I think a good idea is the Geekfest one where everyone gets together contributes to the box and puts some dosh in for the next shipping |

The box was 28 kg and real huge! when it arrived at my place last Tuesday, it occupied almost one third (!) of my sleeping/ working room. (Another third is being occupied by my old computer system I am trying to get rid of ...) It was really nice seeing what is in the box, there is something to everyone's liking. I took out some Spaceflight magazines, some photos and a set of DVDs, and added some National Geographic magazines, a book and a spare Spaceflight magazine. The cheapest way for me to get it moving on was to leave the big cardboard box Ian had put around it here and transport some lighter stuff in the blue box and all the paper stuff in my rucksack to Jacques by train. Good luck Jacques when you are trying to get it to Germany ! Nice idea btw, having everyone sign the lid of the blue box and keeping a "guestbook". So now I can at least add "handwritings" to some of your screen names ... All the best, Kirsten

Just a shipping note- if you can drop about a pound the cost will drop about $90- at least shipping from the US to Netherland 43 lbs is $53 but when you goto 44 lbs the price jumps to $140. You may want to check this and take out just enough to save the money.

My personal opinion is that the size of the package is out of control. Ideas have been put forth from time-to-time on this post which would par down the content and reduce the size to a reasonable level. here is my input...It is my opinion (as someone who was in at the start of this whole thing) that a fine selection of the best(!) items should be picked to continue this journey, and the remianing lesser items should be passed along to some museum to give to kids - or something like that. In this way, a selection of good items would carry on with the grab bag's journey, but the constant weight of a multitude of lesser items would be over. I also feel that a particular briefcase/case should be selected to be the "shipping box" (MUCH smaller than the blue tub) and when it is full, that's it - no more in till stuff comes out... :-) It should be a good thind to be next on the grab bag list - not a dreaded time when you have a huge shipping bill ahead of you. I'd forsee a $20 shipping cost for a briefcase sized package. A used/strong/durable briefcase could be picked up for about the cost of what is being suggested to ship the tub just one time! Al this being said, this is a group effort and I'm open to other opinions on this subject. ------------------ Jake Schultz - curator, Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home) |

I'm not going to hide it; I passed not only due to the size of the box but the fact that it is clearly mostly paper goods such as papers and books and CDs now and not worth the cost to ship it to me (and I am a student on top of that).I would say break it up at least and send to different people on the list. This started out as a great idea but I think the trend will always show that the good stuff goes first and most people only want to give away the type of memorabilia that isn't worth anything.

I'm going to pack the most interesting stuff, autographs, photo's of astronauts, pins, patches, decals...tomorrow and send it of to Robert...The other stuff, most of it is, paperwork, old NASA brochures etc. I will make a list of that, and post it here and (if that is oke with the group) send it to those who have interest in it, this way it is much cheaper for me to send it.... I hope you will all agree on this.... --- Jacques www.spacepatches.nl

I like that idea. However, since there is probably a lot, I would suggest offering it in groups (at least for overseas shipping, since every separate envelope is more postage). |

"The Box" is with me. I've been delaying sending it out with the hopes of getting into some of my own boxes to pad its contents. I'm not taking anything out of it, so it will ship one way or another to the next on the list next week. |
