Hi Guys, I did receive the grab box once many years ago...ok, it just seems that long ago now. Will it confuse matters to start 'Grabbox 2'? or a 'European grabbox'? Comments please - if interested I'll start it off with space covers, a patch, photos and old NASA publicity bits. I can't offer space shuttle spares. Nick. |

Back in January 2003, when this thread began, I started a second grab bag, specifically for students (see the 11th post on page 1 of this thread.) Any idea what happened to it? I believe at this point it has either been lost, or there is in fact more than one grab bag in circulation. Any comments? |

I think everybody would agree that the box should not be in anyone's own possession for more than a week. Two weeks min. was the stay for the last person and that simply won't allow enough people to participate in this. Could we all agree to this? |

I'm not sure to whom the comment was directed to, but it did take a while to get the box from Canada to me (didn't see how it was sent); I had the box a week and mailed it out when I could - snow notwithstanding, I also had to get another box and I also work a crazy schedule. I understand though, the anticipation, because I was on the list almost two years.By Parcel Post, which takes "about" four days, it was $23 and change. I don't have the receipt, but a rough calculation on usps.com from 08751 to Huntsville, AL shows that to be slightly more than 40 pounds. Keep in mind, though, I'm calculating backwards, so I could be off. |

That's about how long i've been on the list as well..It does take time, but I'm being patient..Looking forward to it's arrival here in Oklahoma. I'm hoping it arrives around the time of our auction/art show fund raiser for our challenger center effort. [This message has been edited by HouseDadX4 (edited February 02, 2005).] |

I love the tracking number that was used in the post on this page. It gives us all a chance to see where its been and where its going. More importantly is that we get to see when it arrives. I have also been on the list for a very long time and I cant wait until it comes my way. 3 MORE[This message has been edited by andthekids (edited February 02, 2005).] |

Have I dropped of the list ?Now if the package could say make over to this side of the pond with some one going to Autographica and then it going back via some one going to the UACC show (or similar events and vice a versa) it would save a packet for the UK or US guy who has to send it over the pond. The good news: The grab box has arrived! The bad news: The thread ends here, 'cause I'm keeping it all! All right, in all seriousness, I had a few questions/observations that I wanted to share, but first, if anyone's curious, here's what I received:
I stopped taking pictures there 'cause I didn't want to spoil what's inside for the people who are next. And let me tell you, going through it took some time. So, my questions/comments: 1) I was inclined to make some changes to add some durability; to wit: replacing the cardboard box with a plastic one, and purchasing some binders and plastic sleeves to put flat items in. The cardboard box doesn't seem to be a problem, but as I understand, it has to be replaced from time to time. (And, theoretically, a worst-case scenario of shipping damage bad enough to injure the contents is always a possibility.) The binders would protect flat items, which is an issue, in that there were some items that were bent up. The trade-off, however, is that this would, of course, increase the weight, and thus shipping costs. For myself, I think it's worth it to reduce damage to the contents, but others may prefer to keep it as lightweight as possible to get as much content bang for your shipping buck as you can. If anybody who's further down the list has any preferences, please let me know. 2) Given that part of the point of the grab box initially was for newbie collectors to get a jumpstart on their collection, it bothers me that there are handsigned items mixed with autopens and preprints in the box. Sure, looking closely enough, I was able to tell for most of them, but a beginner could easily assume that all of those items were authentic signatures. I think we should start a list of (")signed(") items in the box so that future receipients can easily tell if an item is genuine or not. The same point could be made for hardware, as well. It would be really great to know what exactly a given piece of hardware is, and whether it was flown or not. Again, any thoughts on this idea? 3) Who's next? Give me an address. GEEZ!!! Look at that 'box'! The first pic looks like something that was rigged up on Apollo 13!! Might I suggest at least housing the box inside another that's more sturdy and not as worn? It looks like the box needs to be bigger though. The items are obviously crammed in there tightly! Looks like the poster (?) at the top is quite bent and therefore creased. I've been thinking of putting my name on the list, but if I already had, I'd be biting my nails right now!

Dear DavidH Kpamke first put in her name on page 4 of the posts. 12/2/2003 at 8:32am. She posted twice and then has not posted again. She doesn't have an e-mail address listed. I would say that John is next as he posted. And by the way John way to be patient. It's only been 1 year and some days in waiting for the box to get to you:] I also apprecited your thoughtfulness David for thinking of protecting the box and the contents. Another idea may be to split the box contents into two boxes. You will be able to add packing material? Just a thought. Paul Schultz Spacekid2 |

The problem was in finding the right sized box. I had gotten an Extra Large box from U-Haul (bought brand new), but that was too big, and had to cut down the top of it so the contents wouldn't shift too much. Housing the box inside another is great, but again, there's the cost. At 40+ pounds, well, plug in the zip code at usps.com from where it's originating to where it's going. If indeed the box is meant for newbies than for people to trade duplicates, then you'll find (IMHO) that newbies won't be able to participate as much due to cost. (I also paid extra for delivery confirmation for tracking.) Same thing with splitting into two boxes - you may find that two 20 pound boxes does not cost the same as a 40 pound box. And there's extra possibility of one of the boxes getting lost, or arriving at different times despite being mailed out same day same place. As for the poster (the item, not the person , if it's the one I'm thinking of, it was one that I had pulled out of my collection unfortunately like that already (and I figured it'd be better on top rather than on the bottom.) Same thing with one of the autographs in there - it's got really bad traces of having been mounted on the back. |

When it gets here to Oklahoma, I can go ahead and move everything to a fresh box. My wife is a nurse in a cath lab. They get all kinds of odd shaped boxes, both big and small. I'm sure she'll be able to get me something that's solid and made to fit everything.. |

I don't need to get in on the list for the box so don't add me. I just found this thread interesting. Have you considered sending the box FedEx instead of USPS? FedEx is usually cheaper for any package more than 2-3 lbs. Plus, they include $100 of insurance. |

The grab box is now in the hands of FedEx, repacked and in a sturdier box.Tracking number is 468398651329220. For the record, the grab box now weighs 52 pounds, and cost me $18.81 to ship. For the curious, here's one final peek with the lid off, and what it looked like when I shipped it to John. ------------------ http://allthese worlds.hatbag.net/space.php "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |

Oh, forgot to mention, along with the new box, I started what I thought might be a cool new grab box tradition, signing the lid (with Sharpie, natch) with the date and place. It might be interesting as it travels around to see where it's been and how long it traveled. I'd love to see future receipients carry this on.Hmmm... don't have my list here, but a few highlights. Among other things, I took the Tereshkova postcard, some unidentified Shuttle hardware, and the Shuttle G.I. Joe, who's already making friends with my Mercury and Apollo Joes. A few lithos, a few stickers, and the National Geographic aerial pic of the curvature of the Earth for my mom, who was more impressed with it than any of the space stuff. Put in: A flight suit, a photovoltaic cell left over from the construction of Skylab, some 11 x 14 Apollo lithos, enough meatball stickers to last the grab box for quite a while (unless someone needs several for some reason), a few Shuttle-era astro signed items, a Lego astronaut keychain, among several more "filler" items. ------------------ http://allthese worlds.hatbag.net/space.php "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." - Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo 17 Mission, 11 December 1972 |
