NOt sure and would depend on when the box got to the UK but the company I work for (Energy Cranes) have people flying into Houston evey couple of months. One of them being my father in law. If we get the timming right I should be able to pass the box onto him or another work collegue to post. |

Hi Skip,Too bad I couldn't time the box shipment when it leaves my house for the UK to coincide with one of those Houston trips! I'd happily send it UPS Ground to Houston for it's flight across the pond! Best, Bruce |

Yeah, except I don't think this thing would float like a boat should! I have the box now sitting in my dining room. We had a small group over today and it has been gone over a few times. Sort of like it made three or four stops in one afternoon. Now I just need to repack it, get a roll of duct tape to close it up, get the address of the next person on the list, and wait for a payday when I can afford to pay for the shipping! PS Thanks everyone for coming over this afternoon. I had more fun sharing stories and beers with everyone then going through the box itself. Today was a day we could just relax, enjoy ourselves and have fun with our hobby. Added Easter morning...
Here is a list of the things I threw in the box. Three 40th Anniversary patches for the first flights of the Blackbird; A-12, YF-12 and SR-71. An Apollo 8 patch. Spacecraft films Gemini DVD set An Apollo CSM Grommet still sealed in its brown paper wrapper. AP-9 Recovery cover signed by Rusty Schweickart Bob White Mach 6 anniversary cover signed by Bob White A NASA Meatball sticker signed by Jack Lousma An STS-7 ISP Crew litho. (Has seen it’s better days to be honest, but it’s real.) A few postcards, some other pictures. I took out about 8 covers or so… some inflatable toys, some literature on teaching space to kids in school, and an Old National Geo Some things traded hands here at the house between guests without getting into the box. That was cool, thanks again guys! One guest provides this list of things in and out. Items removed from box 1 Lockheed X-33 CD 1 Shuttle payload liner bookmark 1 inflatable space shuttle toy Items added to box 2 Apollo 35th anniv medallions 1 shuttle west coast launch complex medallion ~6 X-31 brochures 1 signed McArthur litho 1 signed Jim Voss flyer ~20 Boeing Columbia disaster memorials ~ 7 covers A bunch of NASA ephemera 3 NASA CDs 1 NASA DVD 2 Boeing Delta 300th launch DVD NASA pins 1 Boeing Delta/Hubble repair VCR tape 1 pile NASA stickers (includes Skylab & ASTP Snoopys) & some other stuff. One guest put in a couple of real nice items I won’t mention, but the next person on the list may be pleased. The other guests added a lot of covers and other trinkets included a dual signed picture which includes a moonwalker that is really humorous. The box is pretty full as it stands now. I would suggest taking out more in volume and weight then you put in. There is a lack of pre-shuttle signed stuff, so if you have some extras it might be nice to populate it with that to keep it more exciting. There are a lot of videos, CDs and DVDs starting to pile up in there too. ------------------ Kind Regards

My Thanks to all the Great People who have seen this project through over the years. I can't wait to see all the Teasures packed inside! Sounds like Doug had a Great "Space-Party" and The Grab-Box will soon be comming to my Wonderful Small Southern Oregon Community. When Doug mentioned that there was a lot of DVD's and other Educational material inside, my ideal now is have a "Space-Day" and to donate some of that "Excess-Wieght" to our School and County Libary. Wow, I can hardly wait to see the face of a little Girl when she learns that see is holding a piece of the Space Shuttle, or the Boy who has won a Medallion for his 1st Place Sience Project...Who knows, this could be that spark for our next Generations to start their interests in SPACE! |

Dear All, I have contacted the San Diego AeroSpace Museum about having the box visit during their Space Day event May 21st. The Museum is very interested in having the box open during their event. (Prehaps even in front of the Apollo 9 CM) My thought was that the box could be opened with a select number of kids getting an opportunity to take something from the box. I wanted to get your advice about if you think this is good? And what you all think would be the appropriate amount of Kids taking a ?picture, DVD? from the box to help them start their own collection. I was going to bring some of my own collection as a back drop. I have already told them the story of where the box has been and about cS. Please let me know what you think since the box is valued by those down on the list. I have not agreed to anything yet. Thanks for your help. Great idea Jake! Assuming there are relevant materials left and there aren't any objections from anyone downlist from me, I may donate a few of the "heavier" educational items to my daughter's school before sending The Box on it's way to Machbusterman. Best, Bruce |

Unfortunately, for those of us downline, it is like saying you are going to add people in front of those who have been waiting some time to get the box. To have some kind of control on what is to be taken and by whom would be a logisitical nightmare. How do you say with a bunch of kids around, ok you can go ahead but to another sorry. I don't want to see some kids feeling left out. And if you try to accomodate everyone, before you know it, the box will be empty, and there won't be a lot of happy campers on the list. To have the box displayed is ok, even to show its contents, but my vote is no on the distribution. If I'm outvoted by the other guys who are waiting, I will accept it. Another issue is the timing. Are you going to hold on to the box for weeks to coincide with the date of May 21st? I would say that a better solution would be to take duplicate items or items that are similiar and create a small box for the event. This allows the first to continue on. I show my large collection for free to kids all the time at airshows, events, etc. For me to say though that I'm going to take the contents of the box when it arrives and give items out to the kids I see, wouldn't be fair to the people who are next on the list. I agree with Moonpaws...There are people on this list for more than a year, and to have them wait even longer and, before that, to give the items to kids...Not such a good idea...."take duplicate items or items that are similiar and create a small box for the event. This allows the first to continue on." ---- Jacques www.spacepatches.info

Moonpaws & Jacques,In no way was I implying that I wanted to take the box to my daughter's school and have 50 kids go through the items - (ugh! think of the germs!). Also, where does it imply in my post that I would "hold up" sending the box on (until May 21rst? - whaa?). All I was trying to suggest was that if there were common or multiple heavier items like books or videos that we all have or have seen, those items could be put towards continuing younger interests in space AND save my wallet a little on the postage when it leaves the US for Europe. Again, this is the SECOND time luck has placed my name just ahead of a European recipient. Having read just these two responses to my suggestion, don't worry guys, I won't sit on it for more than a day or arbitrarily remove items to that might otherwise inspire kids to think about space exploration. For that, I'll continue speaking at our local schools, donating my own personal items and makin arrangements for astronauts-to-classroom phone conferences. Kind regards, Bruce Moody |

I agree %100......I was going to say, start another box just for members with kids to place things like patches, stickers and such.. but now believe it would be too difficult to control. Any thoughts? [This message has been edited by John K. Rochester (edited March 31, 2005).] |

Moonpaws & Jacques, I appreciate the replies. I wanted honest feed back so I could have some direction. I definately do not want any one to wait for the box. So if I receive the box before May 21st I will take out a few things and create another box as has been suggested. My plan was not to open the box and say go and have the kids just go for it. My thought was for say 10 kids chosen by a raffle to get the opportunity to take a duplicate picture, cover seleted from the box. I will obviously add to the box and then send it on its way. Just the idea that the kids get to have something that has been placed in the box to start their own collection will be inspiring. I will make it work for the event. So again thanks guys for the feed back and let's keep the box rolling. Paul Schultz Spacekid2 |

Upon further thought, I agree (with the above postings) that folks on the waiting list have priority over "strangers" (kids seems to be the conversation here) who show up to an opening. This whole thing has evolved way beyond its simple original intent so we're all making this up as we go. Items that may be un-interesting to some of the folks who receive the box may be just what makes someone else's day. So it is difficult to decide what possibly to remove from the box and "give to kids" so-to-speak. That said, I like the fundamental idea of sharing extra space-related items with kids who show interst. I have done so many times in the past and enjoy fostering interest in spaceflight/history. We may want to settle on a particular shipping box and decide that it becomes the maximum size from here on out. In this way, the one who receives the box is responsible to make sure it doesn't get any bigger. One may take more out of the box if you put a lot of new stuff back in, but this whole process doesn't work if the box keeps getting bigger every stop..! Hope we're all having fun....... ------------------ Jake Schultz - curator, Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home) |

My hats off to Jake as well...When it arrived here some 4 or 5 weeks ago, it weighed 53 lbs. When I sent it out a few days later it weighed 61 pounds. Didn't realize that between myself and our NASA ERC, we added another 8 pounds to it..Will be very interesting to see what's inside when it comes back for a 2nd time in a year or two... |

When time gets around to your name, (figure about a year) work with the person one ahead of you on the list who will have the package at that time, e-mail your address to them, and they'll send it to you.... and so on... and so on... and so on...------------------ Jake Schultz - curator, Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home) |

Hopefully someone down the line will want alot of the printed material. It takes up alot of the weight. I will be quick and get the box back on its way. Box was sent on it's way to Spacekid2 on 4-27, In case anyone wants to know, it weighs 60.5 lbs & cost $37.02 via FedX ground to ship.Had a great time looking thru it! It takes a few hours to go thru it all, & then you have to repack it, now there's an art form. What I took from the box The humorous photo, 1 of the 35th anniversary medalions, a couple buttons, & some of the educational printed materials. I added A MFA Shuttle/Mir Medalion in its backer card. Added 3 buttons, some more printed nasa material, 2 small meteorites, A Hot Wheels/JPL Mars Rover (unopened). My collection is small, so I did the best I could, Had a nice poster I wanted to add, but there was no way I was going to roll it up, & squeeze it into the box. Thanks to all for sharing, & don't forget to sign the book Larry |
