This is the final result. Pascal won't mind that I stole one of his photos of the finished work, commemorating Dutch ESA astronaut Wubbo Ockels. |

'Man of the Moon', 2015 30x40cm gouache on art board In August 1971, towards the end of the third moonwalk of the Apollo 15 mission, astronaut Dave Scott left a 3.5-inch aluminum statuette on the moon as a memorial for 14 astronauts who died in the line of duty. This fact was revealed by the crew only after the mission. The artwork was created by Belgian artist Paul van Hoeydonck and became known as ‘Fallen Astronaut’. But Van Hoeydonck originally wanted to name it ‘Man of the moon’, so that is the title I gave my painting. Only two unclear pictures of the statuette exist, so the composition was a bit of a challenge. But I hear Van Hoeydonck is pleased with the way I depicted the scene. |

I love the true 'metal quality' of the figure... that is not easy to do in such a convincing way! Kudos again, Ed! |

This weekend two cS members visited me to pick up their paintings. Danny is the new owner of "Man of the Moon," while Philip came to collect this Hubble anniversary painting "Hubble's Universe," that I made late last year. Danny also presented me with a print of "Man of the Moon," signed by Paul van Hoeydonck. |

Ed, you are such a talented artist! Beautiful work. Being a relatively new member to cS, I just saw your triptych from 2006.I hope you don't take my question below as snarky but if the moon's atmosphere is so incredibly thin, how could the CSM leave such a long, straight and narrow contrail? Rocket engine exhausts would dissipate quickly and broadly in a near vacuum, correct? Or are you striving for symbology when you painted that contrail? |

Yes, that contrail is purely symbolical.I might add here again that I always post new works on my Facebook page. Look for 'Ed Hengeveld Space Art' on Facebook. |

If I had 1/1000 the talent Ed does, I'd consider myself fortunate. Great work, Ed and thank goodness you chose a field I have high interest in. |
