My latest artwork was not quite what I'm used to and frankly it was quite a challenge for me. This was painted 'Leonov-style' on the inside of a sphere, which will contain models of two spacewalking figures: Alexei Leonov and Ed White. The model, titled 'East meets West', is built by fellow-Dutchman Pascal. More of his work can be seen in the model-building topic.

"Falling To Earth", 2011
30x40cm
gouache on art board

Last night I presented this painting to Apollo 15 CMP Al Worden. He seemed very pleased with it and called it the best transearth EVA painting he had ever seen.

He was also pleasantly surprised that I had depicted the mapping camera in the extended position, as it was during the EVA. "Not many people pick up on that", he said.

What a great painting Ed. Looks like you can reach out and touch the moon... just over there.

Seeing the open hatch in this painting brings to mind the fact that if the hatch design had not been changed after the Apollo 1 fire, none of these EVAs probably would have been possible.

I was hoping you'd post it up here, I didn't manage a decent picture Wednesday night as there were too many others scrambling to get a good picture of Al holding it up. A really beautiful painting and for me it was nice to see not only Al but the famous Ed as well!

A great painting and a great evening!

Well I guess we would all like to see a complete overview of Ed Hengeveld's work so it should include images of all paintings ever made!

Maybe those cSers interested in a copy could sign up.

Just added "Falling to Earth" to Al Worden's website. It's a beauty (as are all of Ed's paintings).

Thanks for the reprint permission, Ed!

Straw helmet, flowered torso, grass pants, bare feet and flip flops. And the infamous "Hala'i Wally" patch on the front.

And you always have to be late because you're on Island time.

Ed... the recreation of Col. Worden's deep-space EVA on Apollo 15 is fantastic! The detail included is pretty amazing! Thanks for sharing!

John Ffoulkes was kind enough to send me this photo showing Bruce McCandless holding my MMU painting, after he signed it during his visit to London last week. According to John, McCandless was "very, very impressed" by the painting.

"McCall's Universe", 2012
gouache on art board
40x25cm

In the past months I have been busy with other things, so it was about time I made a new painting. I tried something a little more symbolic this time as a tribute to one of my great examples.

Technically the painting above was the second of 2012. The first was not space-related. For the third one I want to do a full-frontal Buzz Aldrin, the iconic Apollo 11 image.

I would love to have a print of "McCall's Universe" since his imagery was one of the first things I was introduced to and of course, I still hold his shuttle patch designs in high regard. Excellent tribute.

Note that in the famous Apollo 11 photo of Buzz Aldrin his head appears to be too big, probably because Armstrong was standing close to him. I have changed that in this painting, so that the dimensions are more normal.
