"The greatest experience" 30x40cm mixed media on paper This artwork has an interesting history. The spacecraft and astronaut were made in 1994(!) using pencils only. Back then I used paint for the earth/space background, but I was very unhappy with the result. So I put it away and thought no more about it. You can't win 'em all... But today, after 16 years, I felt like painting in a new background. The final result looks a lot better, even though I am still not 100% satisfied. My conclusion is that I still have a lot to learn. |

"A heck of a big leap" 40x30cm mixed media on paper Just as last week's painting, this is an old artwork that I was never really completely satisfied with. The astronaut and Shuttle were made in 1995 using color pencils. It was in my 'transition' period, when I started using paint for the backgrounds - try making a black space background with pencils only! I didn't like the way the earth turned out back then, so today I painted in a new one and this looks a lot better. Now I'm hoping that Bruce McCandless won't sue me... |

Ed, I LOVE "A Heck of a Big Leap"! It's fabulous. An awesome job -- so effective mixing the media as you did.The best thing, though, is how you FINALLY painted yourself in space! That's you floating out there, right? Hah, I know you -- and it's SO obvious it's you. |

It is not my intention to give readers of this topic a Hengeveld-overdose, but here is a painting I did last summer at the request of Mike Durst, Director for the Robert and Elisabeth Moore Observatory at Columbia Basin College. Mike is also responsible for the school’s Astronomy program and he invited Story Musgrave for a talk at CBC last week to help develop enthusiasm for the plan to build a planetarium on campus. The painting was made for that occasion and I depicted Story with his beloved T-38 jet. I didn't want to show the painting before Story had seen it, so now I can finally reveal it. |

A Hengeveld overdose?? No such thing. But we are hooked Ed so just keep them coming so we don't have to deal with withdrawl.I notice that Story is wearing the STS-6 patch and the Mach 25 patch. So this must be based on an image post STS-6 and prior to STS-51-F? Great job on capturing the likeness and your usual excellent detail of the ship. In this case the T-38. |

Thanks Tim. The flightsuit is actually based on a photo of John Blaha, with the appropriate emblems added to situate the painting in the timeframe you correctly mentioned. |

Ed in my opinion that is your best portrait yet. The likeness to Story Musgrave is amazing, as it the T-38. Great job. |

Our FREE online astronomy magazine "GuideStar" has an article on Ed Hengeveld's artworks. It's in Dutch language but well illustrated by Ed's friend, Danny Van Hoecke, multi-media cooperator of the Euro Space Society.Just download the December 2010 PDF. |
