Gemini 8 and Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died at the age of 82, according to a statement released by his family. We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati. He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits. As much as Neil cherished his privacy, he always appreciated the expressions of good will from people around the world and from all walks of life. While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves. For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink. collectSPACE Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, diesAstronaut Neil A. Armstrong, who in 1969 took a "small step" to become the first human to set foot on the moon, has died at the age of 82. Armstrong, whose described his first steps on the lunar surface as a "giant leap for all mankind," died on Saturday (Aug. 25). He had undergone bypass coronary surgery on Aug. 7, two days following his 82nd birthday. Armstrong's death was confirmed in a statement by his family. A moment of silence can be signified by a reply with no words and only a period. |

Neil was a nice guy and a good man. May he rest in peace. I walked out and winked at the Moon tonight.

Words fail to properly describe what a fine ambassador for the U.S. and for spaceflight Neil was. I knew this day would come but now that it's here, it still hurts. |

Most certainly not expected. We all know he was in the hospital for heart surgery, but you figure with modern medical advances today that if problems are caught early enough they wouldn't be a problem. But I guess one never knows when they are going to go.The world just got a little less likeable today. Sure Neil had been retired for many years, but even though he wasn't one to necessarily stay in the public eye, at least he would speak his mind on a topic and do a bit more than that if it involved the state of our country's space program, space policy, education and/or engineering or other aerospace issues. Sure, it may have been politics that got him appointed to the shuttle accident investigation commissions, but he gave it his 100% effort when he was involved in them. It is those smarts and his conviction that we've now lost. |

I just learned. What a sad day indeed. I was 12 when I watched him make that small step. The next year I chose "Neil" as my confirmation name. I finally had the chance to meet him in 1993 when he was inducted into the AHoF.In 2009 I was able to send him my commemorative X-15, Gemini and Apollo patches. A few weeks later he emailed me a gracious thank you and said he was happy to add them to his collection. He had a collection. He was one of us! A true gentleman, a courageous pioneer, a tireless ambassador and the perfect choice to be first. God Bless his family, friends and fellow explorers. |
