I would suggest that for questions such as this, where you want to be assured a reply in time, you would do best to contact the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation directly. They are easily accessible by phone and e-mail. |

I am looking for assistance in obtaining autographs from some of the special guests and Rick Hauck. Anyone might be able to assist me? I can't make it down this year. Thanks! |

Greetings. Depending on the size of the items you need signed I may be able to help. I live in MI and go by Waterford for work fairly often so receiving/returning the items will be simple if they are sizes that I can pack in my luggage. Feel free to e-mail me with details (rsimon007@aol.com). |

When the "Next Nine" of astronaut group 2 met at the Rice Hotel in Houston, they were told to sign in using the name "Max Peck." This was the name of the hotel's general manager, who was in on the scheme to avoid media attention, but caused some confusion with the desk staff. The best, more reliable source for this is Gene Cernan's book "The Last Man on the Moon."

So is there a list (or can we make one) of everyone here who is going to the show? It's my first time and I'm going alone so I would really like to make sure I can make sure I know who I can go to for questions/info! |

If anything like last year, which the ASF ran to perfection, the lobby of the Radisson will have a big set-up where people can pick up their packages and/or get information. ASF staff will be in/around the hotel all weekend. This is also about 30 feet from the hotel bar/restaurant. This ends up being the default 'meeting/hanging out/after party' place. My advice? When in doubt, hit the lobby/bar. Last year I was sitting in hotel room, walked over to the lobby just to see if anything was up... ...and Harrison Schmitt is standing there. And he gladly took a picture with me. He was there for something else STS-133 is my guess. As for what to get signed, that is a tough one. I did a budget, and when I totaled it, I realized if I wanted to get *everything* signed that I could, it would run several thousand dollars. If you're not talking about personally owned stuff, the dealers are great. I brought a photo for a 'Moonwalker from each mission' collage. I walked in and the dealers had photos that blew away the one I'd brought. The prices were really good. |

In the "From The Earth to the Moon" mini-series, they show a confused hotel clerk dealing with multiple gentlemen announcing themselves as 'Max Peck'. Classic.

Yes, and my crimson ascot suggestion was just me being goofy. Nothing space-related that I am aware of. |

I am seeking a Scott Carpenter signature with his "Aurora 7" insignia added. I have a "We Seven" book signed by John Glenn that I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take my book to the show and have Scott add his name and "Aurora 7" insignia. Let me know. You can email me at the email above. I can ship the book this week. I know it is cutting it close to the show. Thank you in advance. |

One of my favorite mementos from last year is my photo with the Skylab astronauts, a last minute addition to the show options. It would be great if all or most of the 15 shuttle astronauts attending would agree to a similar photo op this year. If so, sign me up! |

We can't promise an additional photo op right now, but we do have some more good news: Gemini and Apollo astronaut Gen. Thomas Stafford will be attending the Gemini XII Dinner and Reception on Nov. 5. |

Ugh. I would have much preferred for Stafford to be signing. He'd be a good one for someone to have a private signing with. |

Stafford has indeed done both shows and private signings in the past few years, most recently at Spacefest. He did a mail-in signing with ASF a few years ago. |

General Stafford was incredibly gracious and kind - at least with me, at Spacefest last year. It was one of the highlights for me. |

How would you rate the quality, variety, and price of the photos offered by the vendors? I'll be bringing some of my own, but just wondering. The missus is making me a custom Max Peck badge to wear at the bar. Also, the VAB is opening to tours starting next week. I've wanted to see the interior of this building for many years. No platinum ticket for me, so I'll be going Friday at 1:00 p.m. Hope to see some of you there. |

Vendor photos have been of good quality and variety in the past, and I expect that trend to continue. My advice would be, if you want a certain image to be signed, then go ahead and get a copy of the photo you want to bring along. Then, check out the offerings at the show and make a choice of buying a different image or using the one you brought along. Once you are at the show, it is pretty much too late to go get a copy of a different photo if the one you want is not offered or sold out. |

Best is to call the number on the website. Operators will understand what you're looking for if you mention the VAB tour. The website has not been updated to include the new tours. Since you're in the UK, I don't believe you can call a US toll-free number with the 866 prefix. However, there is a group sales phone number +1-321-449-4400 which may be able to make the sale for you. |

Due to a unique set of circumstances I'll be getting in later on Thursday than I anticipated -- about 9, so if folks are still there I'm happy to join in. Friday or Saturday night works for me as well. |

Just a heads up to suggest that for those who plan on purchasing a number of signatures at the event with a credit card. Now would be a good time to let your credit card company know in advance where you will, what you will be doing and what you plan on spending. Nothing worse than waiting in line getting a signature and then your credit card, that you just used for the previous astro, get rejected (I speak from embarrassing experience).

I don't know if the location of the photo op has been considered yet or not, but a great place for a photo op with Carpenter would be the Mercury monument at the entrance road to Pad 14. A photo op with Dick Gordon could be done at the Gemini missions billboard by Pad 19. |

The info mailed to me suggests that the photo will be taken at the hotel after the security check, and prior to bus boarding. Nicole and Lynn, the ball is in your court. |

It is with considerable regret I have to announce that I will no longer be able to attend the AAMS event due to Qantas Airways last night shutting down all domestic and international operations for an indefinite period over a protracted fight with three airline unions. Even if I wanted to fly to the States on another carrier, every available seat for the new few days has been snapped up by now and there's nothing available. Not only is this personally highly disappointing, but it also means that I will not be able to sign those 300 books that Steve Hankow has waiting for me with the special Mercury insert. He and I are trying to work out something now, as we simply cannot hold back on sending these books out any longer, and Steve will make an announcement on collectSPACE very shortly. It may be that we will offer a signed (but not affixed) bookplate as an interim measure, and later - when I can finally get to the U.S. (which may not be for several months now) we will offer a special book mail-in at which I can personally sign and return books then. However this is all conjectural right now, so for those with orders for the Mercury book plus special insert with Farthest Reaches, please stand by for further news. I'm truly gutted, as this has ruined many plans and planned reunions for me. |

Unfortunately I'm in the same position as Colin. To say I'm gutted is an understatement. I have two platinum plus tickets that I cannot use as a result of the Qantas Crisis. I'm endeavoring to contact Nicole as to how I can pass these on to someone or transfer to next year. gutted. |

I work in the industry so don't be too surprised if the QF / union dispute is resolved very quickly. I certainly hope it is for all concerned. Grounding the fleet has taken brinksmanship to a new level. |

I actually worked for Qantas for 32 years before retiring. Hopefully the matter will be resolved quickly, but the domino effect of grounding the entire Qantas fleet will take many subsequent days to resolve and clear for many reasons. As I was due to fly out in about 45 hours I can't see any clear skies ahead, even if there is some sort of resolution later today. On an associated note, Steve Hankow and I managed in the last hour or so to set up an interim solution to the book-signing problem which I will post in the next few minutes on the collectSPACE Buy, Sell, Trade forum. |

Understood Colin ... but hopefully a high rebook / cancellation factor will release sufficient capacity to ensure a return to flight ops. even with a unit compromised fleet. Good luck mate |
