Guess its just the way of things, mind you considering he thought he'd be spending a fortnight on a cruise ship but instead he's spending a weekend in a hotel in Birmingham, it's no surprise he wants to soften the blow a bit by earning a bit extra! |

I hear a barge cruise out of Birmingham down to Slough on the Grand Union Canal is very nice this time of year... just as nice as Istanbul and Rome... |

I don't think any of the military or NASA training Charlie Duke went through could prepare him for a visit to Slough on a Saturday afternoon! |

I will ask Charlie if he fancies a side trip to Slough then, it could be an adventure for us. Charlie will be at Autographica both days, Saturday and Sunday. I am picking him up from the airport on Friday morning. Anyone else staying for the weekend? and/or for the dinner on Saturday evening? |

Does that mean he will be joining us for the drinks reception on the Friday evening? |

I'll be there from Friday evening until Sunday lunchtime. Haven't found out who I will be sitting with for dinner yet. |

Not sure about drinks as yet, but we could well do that too as long as Charlie isnt too tired from his long flight/journey, and I'm not too tired from driving.I don't see it being a problem but only the good man himself can decide. I will put in a good word and hope to see you all at the event over the weekend.

Dave has just confirmed that Scott Carpenter has cancelled. On a vaguely unconnected matter for those that have met Charlie Duke before, has he generally had any pictures available of him working as Capcom on Apollo 11? |

Charlie wont be bringing his own pics so unless Dave has some of the Apollo 11 Capcom pics to give out, it may well be worth you printing your own if that's the pic you want him to sign just in case. |

Thanks for letting me know, as it turns out someone has provided me with a picture I can print and take to the event so it looks to be problem solved. |

It's amazing how few good photos there are of Charlie Duke on the Moon. Counting the three virtually identical "saluting the flag" shots as one, there are only about four decent photos, and arguably only one (the flag photo) was deliberate. All of the rest seem to show Charlie "accidentally" and often when he is looking away from the camera, or when he is in the distant background. With the obvious exception of Neil Armstrong, Charlie Duke seems to be the most poorly photographed of the 12 Moonwalkers. (No offence intended to John Young - he did an absolutely first-class job as mission commander.)

That is a point not lost on Charlie. I asked him recently what he would have done differently on Apollo 16 had he the time over. He regretted not having more photos of John and himself on the moon; he would have liked "more pictures for us". |

I concur, I still like the tales of Charlie's brother William causing MC to stop and of Charlie signing "Panties"!I hope you all enjoy the article that is going to be in "Spaceflight" written about Charlie. It will hopefully go in an issue around August time. I wrote it and Rick helped with additional info and pictures. |

It's about this time (a few days before Autographica) that someone always proposes a get-together, but when the day arrives it never seems to work out. Let's try again: I propose a meeting at the hotel bar at 4.00pm on Friday (for those staying the full weekend) and also at 5.00pm on Saturday. It's my round. Oops! Where's the edit button.... |

Well I'll be around! I always look out for cS-ers, but apart from Paul Williams and Dave Worrell, rarely recognise anyone, because everyone seems to use noms de plume! Mine's a JD and soda! With ice! Thanks! Do come over to the Space Station stand and say hello! |

Going to see how many people I can get to join! We will no doubt catch up on Friday evening for drinks or before dinner on Saturday. |

Looks like the JD will have to wait, if the offer is still open! Traders are not setting up until 4.00pm Friday: see you at the drinks reception?

Great start to the weekend! The drinks reception was uncluttered and enjoyable: Helen Sharman, Bruce McCandless and Charlie Duke were relaxed, approachable and great to talk with! |

I have a great photo for Bruce McCandless to sign and I will belatedly be starting a collection of moonwalkers on one photo. I will hopefully get Charles Duke's autograph on a large image of a full moon. If I had started this collection way back when Autographica started I could now have had about 6 moonwalkers on one photo by now.I want to send out a big thank you to the organisers of this event for making it possible for us in the U.K. to meet the legends of the early U.S. space missions. |
