My sincere condolences to Mike's family and friends. I did not know Mike personally, but he shared with us for many years his passion for the history of space exploration and we will remember him for this, and for the gentleman he was. |

Very sorry to hear about Mike. He was just a year older than I am. I didn't know him personally either but he seems like he was a good guy. |

Wish I had known him myself. Glad he kept his positive attitude right up until the end. Mike, whereever you are, Godspeed and good tailwinds buddy! |

A lovely guy who used to write to me in the UK when my space interests were growing, a long time ago - and who was back in touch in recent years. He'll be missed. |

My sympathy goes out to all my fellow-collectSPACE people who have lost a good friend as well as his family. Losing a friend is NEVER easy, but this time of year makes it even harder. I am sorry. |

It all began with a suggestion from Erik (hoorenz). We were saddened to learn of Mike's passing and today Mike would have celebrated his 60th birthday. Mike was always thrilled that Alan Shepard launched on his birthday. The original idea for the patch was to replace the Eagle from the Apollo 11 crew patch with a (Baltimore) Oriole. But that alone didn't capture Mike's spirit. So inspired by Alan Shepard's golf shot, I pictured Mike hitting a baseball on the Moon. The ISS orbiting the Earth is for Baltimore native astronaut Reid Wiseman who will launch to the ISS later this month. The 7 stars represent that Alan Shepard launched on Mike's 7th birthday. The three stars together at the top represent Mike, his wife Phyllis and son Craig. Just like Gene Cernan on Apollo 17, Mike has drawn his child's initials in the lunar surface. He also planted the state flag of Maryland on the surface. The bottom border colors are for the sports teams he worked for: the Baltimore Banners of World Team Tennis, the Baltimore Orioles baseball team, the Baltimore Blast soccer team and the Baltimore Bayrunners minor league basketball team. The top border is for collectSPACE where we all came to know Mike. I reached out to astronaut Reid Wiseman who had corresponded with Mike and asked him if he would pose with the patch for Mikes family. Not only did he but he also recruited fellow Maryland astronaut Terry Virts to join him. This design was a team effort. Jorge's (KAPTEC) helped with the graphics and in consultation with Erik and Bill Coukoulis (Space Emblem Art). Their cS names are across the horizon. Mike was a passionate supporter of space exploration and like those of us who were born in the 1950s, was thrilled to witness our first explorations off the planet. He enjoyed his career as an sports equipment manager and while we could never agree on which team was best in the MLB American League East, (Red Sox) he was a good and kind man. There's a saying that the good die young. In Mike's case it is true. I hope he is enjoying the wonders of Gods Universe and who knows, maybe he's caddying for Al Shepard. Rest in Peace Mike. |

Indeed, a very nice tribute, well done and I know Mike would be thrilled to know there is a special patch designed in his honor and memory. |

Mike's son Craig is now in urgent need of a kidney transplant. His family is asking for those willing to help or for more information to contact them. Please help us find a "Good Samaritan" kidney donor. All medical expenses for the kidney donor from initial physical through recuperation are paid by Craig's medical insurance. We have started a youcaring.com funding site to help reimburse any travel, housing and loss of income due to the "Good Samaritan's" gift of a kidney. |
