Not to suggest that Ken (or anyone else associated with this event) meant any disrespect to Dick Gordon, but it does seem a bit odd to use his appearance even before it happens to hype a future guest as being even more in demand. It makes Gordon sound like he's the "opening act" for the October speaker when Gordon merits every bit the same attention (regardless of who the mystery guest is).

For those attending, or still deciding to attend, I might suggest focusing on Gordon and leaving concerns about whoever is coming next to afterward.

I totally agree Robert and would add that our comments were not intended to be interpreted in that way. Obviously though as this is an issue it surely should be discussed?

You are quite correct Robert and that has been very much Ken's view of the March/April event all along. That is why Ken invited Dick Gordon in the first instance.

If the case of who may or may not be attending in October has over shadowed the Dick Gordon event I must take responsibility and apologise for over stating the case.

In my desire to support Ken's efforts I got carried away and distracted everybody from the main event.

Ken tells me some 50 or so people have told him they would like tickets but as yet have not sent payment.

Anybody reading this post who falls in to this group, could you please forward payment to Ken asap. He is required to send part payment of Dick's fee shortly.

A little over 3 weeks to go now. Get those cheques in to Ken guys; it is only money when all is said and done! You will look back on the event with fond memories, much as we are currently doing with the shuttle program.

Please, let's make sure that Dick Gordon's only visit to the UK isn't Autographica in October. If you haven't sent your cheque yet... time is running out!

It seems like a lot of money but how many chances do we think there will be to meet this 'legend'. It's going to be a good evening!!

Well I'll certainly be attending both, as will many of my soft, shandy-drinking southerner mates!

Silly to pass up any opportunity to meet an Astronaut: and in any case, the two events are as different as chalk and cheese!

Thanks for the translation Steve.

Carl has clearly frequented the Jean Brody finishing school for young ladies.

Alas, I suspect..... only as a window cleaner!

Rick, that is excellent news!

Many thanks to Ken and all others involved in making this event possible.

It will be only equalled in April by the words '...3 ...2 ...1 ...Booster Ignition ...Lift-Off of Endeavour...' oN the 19th April.

I would have to second that sentiment. Ken puts a great deal of effort and not a little of his own cash in to putting on these events and I think it fitting that as many people as possible attend on March 31st/April 1st to show their support.

Long may they continue... is a worthy sentiment that is, in reality, a pipe dream.

With a little over a week until the Dick Gordon event in Pontefract might I suggest anybody wishing to purchase their tickets through the mail get a move on.

I would imagine Ken could make arrangements for tickets to be collected at the door but he has not mentioned anything to me about it.

In the unlikely event that someone does not have access to details for Dick Gordon's visit. Have a look here.

Not quiet in the same league, but if you are nearby Manchester this coming weekend and like visiting airfields you may be interested in this. I will be speaking about Gagarin the Pilot Cosmonaut between 16:00 - 17:00. Free.

As has been announced by Jason, Dick Gordon is no longer appearing at Autographica in October.

Anybody not going to the Dick Gordon event in Pontefract at the end of the week... still has time to purchase tickets for Dick's only UK appearance for the foreseeable future.

I look forward to seeing a great turn-out for what will surely be a wonderful event.

It must have been a great night at the dinner if the hangovers are preventing anyone from commenting on it!

Only an hour or so to go before I jump in the car and head off to distant parts of this land where only the bold will go!!

I'll be the one fast asleep in his car after having got to the school way too early.

Be seeing you.

(I take it the talk is a fairly casual affair and you veterans won't all be dressed in your Sunday best and military regalia. 'I love Richard' t-shirt will that do? Please no sniggering at the back.)

Can I be the first to congratulate and thank Ken and his team for putting on what was a wonderful dinner on Thursday evening and a great talk last night. For me and the "Paul Possy", it was a great two days. Dick also managed to sign for over 100 guests after last nights talk. He didnt stop until he got through the lot of them.

Roll on October and the next "Ken" event.

And a BIG thank you to Ken...

Couldn't agree more...

Thought the Q&A was especially good! Particularly liked his answer to the question "how great was Pete Conrad?" ...answer "no greater than me" ...class!

Roll on the next astronaut evening.

Within seconds of meeting Dick Gordon at Carleton Community High School it quickly became evident why the crew of Apollo 12 had a reputation as a fun crew to be around. I introduced myself to Dick and he immediately responded with "Hey Rick, I have a son named after me and we call him Rick." Then out of ear shot of the ladies... and with an accompanying wink he added "...we wouldn't want two Dicks around the house!"

Previous astronaut encounters in Pontefract have taught me that modesty and a self-effacing demeanour is an essential prerequisite of an Apollo astronaut's Right Stuff; Dick had these qualities in spades but they were accompanied by a wicked sense of humour that resulted in a warm handshake, a one liner or a funny anecdote, a wink and a sparkle in his eye whenever ANYBODY came within his orbit... not just the ladies!

This endeared Dick to the hundreds of students he talked to over the two days. He had a knack of putting the pupils at ease. Ranging in age from 7 years to 17 it was a knack that in no small part contributed to excellent Q&As that followed each session.

Prior to the Thursday evening dinner Ken laid on the services of a professional photographer for guest wanting their portraits taken with Dick. Shot against a green screen backdrop the super quality photos emerged after the dinner but now resplendent with an impressive lunar background that incorporated the Apollo 12 mission emblem and the Lunar Module.

It was these photos that Dick happily signed as the evening wore on.

Numbers were down slightly on previous dinners which I am sure did nothing for Ken's hair-line not to mention his bank manager's, but the smaller number made for a more intimate evening. Everybody who brought their photos up to be signed was afforded as much time as they wanted for a chat, a photo, ask questions or share a joke... usually one of Dick's. It was arguably the best dinner encounter Ken has put on to date.

The introduction of a post dinner auction brought even greater levity and added funding though I have to confess the butch, hairy "eye candy" parading the items around the room left a bit to be desired! What the "lovelies" lacked in glamour however they more than made up for with enthusiasm.

The public lecture on April 1st was once again held at St. Wilfreds School all be it in a slightly smaller room. The reception for Dick however was no less warm and the queue for autographs at the end of the evening, even with the modest fee, was as big as any I had seen previously.

For me personally, the most telling observation about Dick came in response to a question from the Friday evening audience. He was asked if his flight had changed him any way? Clearly recalling his Apollo adventure he responded (with evident emotion) that the biggest impact for him personally was having the opportunity to share such a memorable experience with his two best friends.

When asked the same question the previous day at Carlton Community High School his response was the same. But when asked soon after if he was lonely while orbiting the moon solo he typically answered "Heck no, if you had flown with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean you be glad to be rid of them for a while."

It was great to meet some fresh new faces for the first time and many of the usual... not so fresh faces.

Glad I caught up with "Crash" aka Paul for the first time but apologies for Tykeanaut aka Chris; I spotted your T-shirt in the queue as I tried to keep out of the way of the throng but then lost you as the queue diminished.

Ken asked me to thank everybody for their support. The post dinner auction, the photo opportunities, the Friday evening raffle and the modest signing fee appeared to make the event economically viable. Rest assured, any monies left over from this event (if any) will not be going in to Ken's back pocket, rather the back pocket of the next astronaut visitor to West Yorkshire's own "Astronaut Central." Ken does it not for personal gain, rather the opportunity to meet his heroes and "spread the word". It also allows Ken to introduce brave and inspiring pioneers to kids and a general public all too often distracted with hoax nonsense; long may he continue doing so.

Who you may well ask will be his next guest? Ken would not tell me. Despite my persuasive best efforts and even a Chinese burn Ken remained tight lipped. All he would say, with a broad grin was "Watch this space!"

Can only concur with what has already been said and thank Dick for coming over and Ken for his hard work organising the event as always.

As Ian mentioned it was great to see Dick again and after his recent health problems looking so well. His talk and Q and A were as you would expect full of good humour and for anyone who was unable to attend, all I can say is you missed a treat.

I was unable to think of what to get signed and then remembered I had an original 1969 Apollo 12 Press Kit. Dick was interested to see it and as he glanced through the pages quipped 'Did we do all this...?'

Nice to see old friends and some new ones which is always a bonus at these events.

We quizzed Ken as to the identity of his next guest but despite threats of torture and hefty bribes we couldn't get him to crack (just kidding Ken!).

Whoever it is we know it's going to be yet another great event - looking forward to it already.
