Got it on early Friday. Comes in a really big box, and it is heavy too. I will get to check it out tonight. |

My copy showed up yesterday and in perfect condition, well packaged box within a box, with uncut sheets from another publication as packing...which made for some added interesting free reading material.I must say that I am very happy and impressed with how this collection is presented. It is going to take many months to truly appreciate its scope and depth, an exciting experience it has proven already. Thank you Dennis for taking the time to share this amazing archive with us. |

I just skimmed over all three volumes. Looks like this will be the go to book on the shuttle. I will have take it with me and go see Endeavour and get Mr. Jenkins to sign it. The only bad thing is only two pages for each mission. I know he had to cut it down or it would have been five or six volumes not just three. |

I didn't get a shipping email but the set did arrive today. It really is a remarkable set and I know this is one I'll keep going back to well into the future. |

For those of you that pre-ordered one of the signed copies, if you have received your set already, can you confirm that your edition has been signed by Dennis Jenkins?I placed my pre-order on December 21 and received a confirmatory email from Specialty Press that my order was for one of the signed edition sets. Unfortunately, after receiving my set today and opening it this evening, the set that I received does not appear to be signed. I sent an e-mail to Specialty Press this evening to inquire if there was an error for my order. All of this said, signed or unsigned, the set has been wonderfully produced and I am nonetheless excited to add it to my library. |

Can confirm mine was signed; it arrived just today. Only Volume 1 has the signed title page.Echoing the sentiments of everyone above — this is a very impressive collection. Very much worth the wait since the time was taken to seeing the orbiters off to retirement. This brings a satisfying beginning-to-end wholeness to this tome. Thanks, Dennis, for the time committed to this project. |

I received my order today and, as mentioned above, only Vol I is signed.Additionally, the order receipt included in my order explicitly said "Signed Edition". |

I have the original version so hoping they stock the revised three-volume edition at some point and sell it here. |

Mine arrived today. Volume 1 is signed - there's no room on volumes 2 and 3! Beautiful book(s). And I love slipcases. |

I received my signed copy yesterday. It arrived from UPS in perfect condition!! I felt like a kid in a candy store or that we were having a second Christmas. The quality of the three volumes is just splendid. For those who haven't purchased, you won't regret it. The new photos added were wonderful and there were some surprises that I've seen. |

I looked at mine briefly. It is a great book. I haven't had time to look through it much, with a pet passing away. But it does look amazing. |

Regarding Specialty Press packaging, it was definitely valuable for my copy which arrived today. The outer shipping box looks like it fell or was dropped and about 3/4 of one of the corner seams was torn open. The crush-zones on the inside box took that impact — the slipcase and books appear to be in the best condition, which is as it should be. They look pristine along with the shrink wrap. |

After contacting Specialty Press, the representative confirmed that I was supposed to have received one of the signed editions. The error occurred when the warehouse distributor shipped me the incorrect edition. The publisher contacted Mr. Jenkins today and he has graciously offered to ship me a signed edition at no additional cost to me. In doing so, he suggested that I donate the unsigned edition to a local library or Veterans' Home. If Mr. Jenkins reads this forum, I extend my deepest gratitude to you for your kind gesture. I certainly will follow through with your request to donate the unsigned edition to a local group in the West Lafayette (Indiana) area. |

What a beautiful set! I was pleasantly surprised that there was so much more new material compared to the older volumes I own. I love the chapters on shuttle related programs that could have been like the Vandenberg launch site, the shuttle derived cargo carrier and advanced SRBs. Also the third volume covers each mission and often includes alternate patches and crew photos. The miscellaneous shuttle patches are also a nice treat near the end. Plus, there is a whole section on preparing the orbiters for display... I could write on and on... what an awesome set... worth the wait! |

The promised delivery dates for Amazon UK customers has passed and the books have failed to materialize with no new delivery dates provided. It would appear Amazon is currently working on when they will be able to fulfill outstanding orders. I sure hope they succeed. |

The set arrived this Friday and I am over the moon with it! This is the beautiful result of a true labour of love. The amount of materials added since the previous edition is staggering and I was happy to find some colour versions of a couple of personal favourites in the artist impressions department. Mr Jenkins has pulled off an incredible achievement here. One of the major highlights of my library! |

Oh heck... it's $340 AUD down here. What a great bookend it would have been to Chaikin's "Man On The Moon" triple set. That's a little disappointing. Putting it mildly. One that will escape me at that ask. |

My signed set arrived today in pristine shape from Specialty Press. I pulled out the first volume with the intent to do a quick flip through. That proved pretty much impossible. There is so much information jam packed into these books! I really like the early development sections. I especially enjoy seeing the photos of the contractor concept models ... a couple of which I am fortunate enough to have in my collection. |

My signed edition finally arrived - in excellent condition. It's a fantastic introduction to all aspects of the program. As you'd expect, it's a massive improvement on earlier editions. The space shuttle program was such a large and complex beast that I reckon it will be a long time before this is bettered. One thing though, only three quarters of a page of writing on each flight just wasn't enough for me. |

I finally managed to check out my copy of this book set: I've had one or two distractions over the last couple of weeks. My hat goes off to Dennis Jenkins on a stunning piece of work. Superb production quality too. Most certainly THE go to book for the shuttle program. It is likely that I will splash out on a second copy as something tells me this copy will be well thumbed. Even a quick scan of the book turned up fascinating insights and images: I love it. My only regret is that many of the images were not bigger but then I'd imagine the book set would run to 10 volumes instead of 3. But then again, I'm up for it. How about it Dennis!! |

My set arrived yesterday from Amazon in Germany, after the Book Depository in the UK was unable to deliver. The set looks great and I am very impressed, not only with the scope of the books but also with the way they look.I only had time to leaf through it very superficially, but in that short time I spotted five clear errors (not mentioning several typos). I realise that a work of this magnitude is bound to have a few mistakes here and there and I don't want to be negative, but this was literally after leafing through volume 3 for 15 minutes. Hopefully I am an amazing talent, picking out the only errors in the books. |

National Aviation Hall of Fame release Author Dennis R. Jenkins to Receive the 2017 Combs Gates AwardThe National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) proudly reports that Dennis R. Jenkins' three-volume work, "Space Shuttle: Developing an Icon 1972-2013," has earned its author the 15th Annual Combs Gates Award. Jenkins will be presented the $20,000 cash prize on Tuesday, October 10th, at the National Business Aviation Association's (NBAA's) 70th annual Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Las Vegas, NV. NAHF Trustees making the presentation will be joined by 2001 Enshrinee M/Gen. Joe Engle, USAF (Ret), an original test pilot and later commander of NASA's shuttle program, and 2008 Enshrinee Mr. Sean D. Tucker. Space Shuttle: Developing an Icon 1972-2013 recounts the shuttles' 30 years and 135 missions. Having carried more crew members to orbit than all other launch systems, from all other countries combined, as well as more than 4.5 million pounds of payload to orbit, the shuttle celebrated a staggering record of successes. Unfortunately, it was also accompanied by a tragic record of failure, with two accidents claiming the lives of 14 astronauts as well as other incidents claiming several ground personnel. Author Dennis R. Jenkins served as an engineer and project manager on the space shuttle program for 33 years. Arriving just prior to STS-1, he worked in engineering and operations at the Kennedy Space Center and Vandenberg Launch Site. Jenkins was an investigator on the Columbia Accident Investigation Board, senior technical staff to the Return-to-Flight Task Group, and the project manager that planned the delivery of the remaining orbiters to their various display sites at the end of the flight campaign. He sat as the Verville Fellow at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and is currently the project director for the Endeavour display, as well as facility construction manager at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center in Los Angeles. The Combs Award, its original title, grew out of a donation to the NAHF by the late Harry Combs, a 1996 Enshrinee of the NAHF. As part of a $1.3 million gift to help fund the creation of a NAHF research center, Combs stipulated that the Combs Award be established to encourage and support relevant aviation history research and preservation efforts. A panel of expert judges review each submission based upon criteria such as historical accuracy, creativity, potential for long-term impact and value to the NAHF's mission of honoring America's outstanding air and space pioneers. Combs was instrumental to the growth and development of business aviation. Consequently the NAHF partnered with the NBAA to host the award presentation at its annual meeting and convention, the largest business aviation event in the world. The inaugural award was presented at the Opening General Session of the NBAA's 2003 convention, which was held in conjunction with 100th anniversary of the first powered flight. John Gates and his sister, Diane G. Wallach, are co-trustees of the Gates Frontiers Fund, created by their late parents and philanthropists, Charles C. and June S. Gates. The late Mr. Gates, who passed away in 2005 at age 84, was a partner with Combs in several aviation businesses, including the Combs Gates FBO chain and Gates Learjet. This year marks the 15th year for the award and its 12th year with the name changed to reflect a multi-year commitment by the Gates Frontiers Fund to endow the award. The award pays homage to Gates' belief in the benefit of historic preservation and study, and to Combs' own research efforts behind his acclaimed 1979 book, "Kill Devil Hill: Discovering the Secrets of the Wright Brothers." |
