Space Shuttle: Developing an Icon, 1972-2013 by Dennis Jenkins During 30 years and 135 missions, space shuttle carried more crew members to orbit than all other launch systems combined and achieved a staggering record of success. Unfortunately, it was accompanied by a tragic record of failure, with two accidents claiming the lives of fourteen astronauts and other incidents claiming several ground personnel. But as Richard Truly, an astronaut and NASA administrator once said, "Flying in space is a bold business. We cannot print enough money to make it totally risk-free." It was not meant as an excuse, simply a statement of fact regarding the physics of planet earth and chemical rockets.Because it flew for so long, most of the people alive today do not remember a time when space shuttle was not flying. The public was enthralled, the politicians somewhat less so, the space cadets even less. Space shuttle was meant as a stepping-stone to broader exploration but the funding and political will never materialized, leaving the vehicle with little meaningful work for most of its flight campaign. Only near the end was it able to demonstrate its intended purpose, building a space station. But that station was a shell of those envisioned when space shuttle was approved. All of this has left an uncertain legacy for one of the most visible engineering achievements of the 20th century. This book is not meant to establish that legacy, but to document the development, technology, and, to a lesser extent, the flight campaign. Some future historian will need to determine the ultimate worthiness of the program. About all we can say for certain is that it was one hell of a ride. - Volume I: Setting the Stage
- Volume II: Technical Description
- Volume III: The Flight Campaign
- Hardcover, 1,584 pages
- Specialty Press,
November 2016 2017

Judging by the number of pages this set encompasses, I am not surprised that the books did not get published in 2012, in their announced two-volume shape. This must have been a tremendous task... It is one I cannot wait for to see the result of! |

I would have to have asked Mr. Jenkins about this the day after..."when's the next volume coming out?" "Go to collectSPACE.com" (It was more detailed and gracious than that, but it was the first thing he said.)As with others, looking forward to it.

Wow... this will be phenomenal. This has been a long time coming (understandable as Mr. Jenkins has obviously has been otherwise occupied with related matters) but no doubt will be worth the wait. |

There was talk of an update to The History of The National Space Transportation System some time ago. Will the content of that book be included in this set? |

This is the (final) update to the History of the National Space Transportation System so all previous material should be included. |

Are there any new updates about release? November is a few days away and it's not turning up as a coming title in any of the usual sources so I suppose the release has moved back? |

There were three previous editions of Dennis' book. My impression is that this final edition is extensively revised and expanded, in addition to covering the program after the 100th flight and into retirement. |

Actually there are four previous editions. Aerofax published the first edition covering the development program and flights 1-25.Search "Aerofax Datagraph 5." |

Here is what Dennis writes in his preface to "Developing an Icon": When I wrote the mini-edition of what became this book in 1988, the response was overwhelmingly positive, leading me to write the first of the expanded hardcover editions. By the time I finished in 1991, however, Aerofax was largely out of business and other publishers said there would never be a market for more than 500 copies of a book on space shuttle; all declined to publish it. Believing there was a story to be told, I published the book myself. Roger D. Launius, then chief historian at NASA, took notice and coached me on how to make the book more authoritative; the improvement was evident in later editions. By late 2016, more than 100,000 copies of three editions had passed. This is more than an update to the previous edition; it is a complete rewrite and will obviously be the last. |

Orders were being accepted this morning, but it appears Specialty Press didn't take shipping into account: Shipping and handling fees for this product need to be determined - this set weighs over 18 pounds! Please check back in the coming days to order. |

The correct shipping fees are now in effect on the Specialty Press website. Due to this collection's heavy weight (18 lbs) non-standard shipping costs apply. See shopping cart for details. The Press is still seeking ways to reduce the cost of international shipments. The set is also available for pre-order on Amazon at the full list price (unsigned). |

Congratulations, Dennis, on almost 30 years of thoroughly documenting this amazing space program. I ordered my signed copy tonight from Specialty Press as soon as I saw they had figured out the shipping costs.I've been looking forward to this final edition covering the complete program since finding my first used copy of the 1992/1993 hardcover version six years ago. I have always been most impressed with the first several chapters covering the multitude of concept development and design studies. The number of line drawings detailing nearly every conceivable configuration is staggering. I am also particularly drawn to the concept art and photographs of the historical study models. Can’t wait to see them in brilliant 1970s color! |

Postage is important as that box needs to be carefully packed otherwise it will end up squashed at your snail mail box... |

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with how well Specialty Press packages their books for shipping? I've had many problems with Amazon not packing large, heavy books properly, but at least they have an easy return and replacement process. |

Totally agree. Have had so many dented book corners from when Amazon sellers ships book in plain envelopes. |

Same for me. With the $30 shipping, I still think the $99 price is a great deal. I would have paid more overall on Amazon with free shipping. I imagine this will be quite heavy!! |

I am concerned about this as well. My experience with amazon shipping mirrors yours, except I have received books directly from amazon packed loose in a larger box, absolutely no packing inside, and corners are dented and covers scratched. Replacements received after returning damaged books to amazon were shipped the same. Here's hoping Specialty Press does an adequate job of packaging. |

Are the crew portrait gag photos full sized pages? As that would be the primary reason I would order it. Who would sign it for those pre-orders, while supply lasts? |

The first 100 pre-orders through Specialty Press will come signed by Dennis Jenkins. The crew photos in the book (official, gag, in space or alternate) are not full page. They are between 1/6 and 1/4 a page. |
