Don't forget that Dennis will be at Spacefest if you want to bring a volume to get signed, if you missed the pre-order. We're still checking availability in offering them there as well. |

From Dennis Jenkins: Each book will be packaged, at the printer, in an individual box that has 1-inch crush-zones on the top, bottom, and sides. These should protect the corners against most damage (I have dropped one on the corner from waist high and not hurt the slipcase). The warehouse will pack these individual boxes in another box when they are shipped to the final customer. The slipcase will be shrink-wrapped to protect it from scratching against the box. Dennis notes however, that this packaging makes the book too large to fit in a Priority Mail Flat Rate box, so postage will remain at the $30 (domestic) rate that UPS charges. |

Is there a way to find out if a pre-order was within the first 100 orders placed?...and thanks for the update on the packaging, that's good news. |

Since the listing specifically identifies it as "Limited Signed Edition," it should be safe to order as long as that listing is live. When the signed copies are gone, they'll have to change the listing. The big question is — how many are left? Theoretically, putting 100 copies in your shopping cart should be adjusted to show the actual number available, but it rings up the entire 100. |

Per Dennis: ...it is limited to 100 sales... the current page on the Specialty website is for the signed one (it has a different ISBN and item number than the regular edition) so the computer will know when it reaches its 100 sales and stop offering it. The one on Amazon is the regular edition (note it has a different ISBN). |

After posting this morning, I went ahead and ordered a signed copy. Aside from the obvious benefit of Jenkins' signature, Specialty will do a much better job of packaging and shipping than Amazon will. |

I received from Amazon.com the book "Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie," which is a 21-lbs book without any damage. It came in the printer's original packaging. So theoretically if Amazon proceeds the same way, it should be okay. |

I, too, ordered my copy and can't wait to start reading this set. It should be a very good collection of photos and information. |

Specialty Press has now sold out of the 100 signed copies. (They are still taking orders for unsigned copies.) |

I ordered mine about a month ago and am really looking forward to it. From the looks of this thread though, the signed copies could be called the collectSPACE edition as it seems like that's where all of the signed copies are going. |

As of today, Amazon and Specialty Press both still show it as a pre-order, and Amazon says the release date is Feb. 15. Often Amazon's status goes directly from Pre-order to Temporarily Out of Stock, meaning they don't have it yet.

As I expected, Amazon's status has gone from Pre-Order to Temporarily Out Of Stock, with no expected delivery date. I didn't create an account when I ordered the signed edition from Specialty Press, so I can't check my order status. |

An update from Dennis Jenkins: The two containers of books were aboard a containership that docked in Los Angeles at on Feb. 16. The containers should be offloaded today or tomorrow, then they need to clear customs, and will then head via truck to the warehouse in Chicago. So, barring any effects from the current storms in LA, and hoping for good weather across the country, the books should get to Chicago by next weekend. It will take a few days for the warehouse to unpack the containers, get organized, and start fulfilling orders (the ones from Specialty Press will be mailed directly from the warehouse; Amazon orders will take a few extra days since the warehouse will send a large shipment of books to the Amazon fulfillment center which will send them out). Sorry for the delay... moving large things around the world seldom seems to go exactly to plan. But books should be on their way by the end of the month. |

Update via Dennis Jenkins: In theory, all of the preorders from Specialty Press were shipped yesterday (or perhaps today since there were a fair number of them). Books were also shipped to Amazon and B&N, so they should start filling preorders after they arrive at the warehouse and get processed. |

Dennis tells me tonight that the shipping weight of the three volume set has caused Specialty Press more manual work than they anticipated, and so filling pre-orders is taking a little more time than expected. Books are going out daily, but it might not be until early next week that all pre-orders are fulfilled. |

collectSPACE 'Developing an icon': Former space shuttle engineer details program in new tomeThe history of the space shuttle, from its original proposal to its retirement after 30 years launching astronauts on 135 missions, can be a weighty topic — literally. Tipping the scales at more than 18 pounds (8 kilograms), the new three-volume "Space Shuttle: Developing an Icon, 1972-2013" is author Dennis Jenkins' ultimate tome on the development, technology and flight campaign of the NASA reusable, winged launch vehicle. The comprehensive book includes 4,000 diagrams and photos, illustrating more than one million words. |
