Yi So-Yeon, doesn't draw her flower anymore (unless that squiggle underneath the inscription is it, or maybe she was testing out the pen.) But I did get her name in Korean as well as in English.I would thank her, but Yi seems to have disabled her Twitter account, following media reports on how effective the Korean Astronaut Program has been, and in particular, Yi's remaining in the US rather than stay in Korea. |

Has anyone received anything from Julie Payette through the mail recently? I sent her a couple of photos to the Canadian Astronaut Office address a couple of months ago and haven't gotten anything back. |

Julie Payette has been at the Montreal Science Centre since July I believe as Chief Operating Officer. May be best to send your request there? |

Susan Kilrain, unsigned photo I sent + my SASE along with an unsigned L/ES litho. I asked her where to ask for a signed photo, she said to send a request to JSC... and that's what I got back. |

But she signed the items, Hart? Or did you receive them unsigned? That's what I can't really read from your message. |

All two unsigned. Not even an autopen on the litho sent me. But at least I can reuse the SASE. |

Per NASA, when an astronaut retires from the program, their autopen patten(s) is destroyed. |

Is that a recent (relatively speaking) decision? I swear I remember getting an autopen from Haise through JSC in the early '90s. |

Could well be because they were certainly sending out autopens a few years back for astronauts who'd long left the program... and that included crew lithos with members from STS-107. |

Nope. And none of the addresses I had for her would work.

Karen Nyberg was great about signing at University of Maryland tonight. She (and Luca Parmitano) had their L/ES and EVA lithos, although they ran out of those and had to resort to the university's photo which consisted of their Sokol portraits side by side on an 8x10 piece of paper. |

I'm on the e-mailing list of tens of organizations and businesses who have hosted astronaut events once before. As well, I do a simple brute force Google search: "astronaut speaker+[month year]", "astronaut presentation+[month year]", and so on.The U of Maryland event was a last-minute fluke, something I discovered on the college's website while searching for astronaut presentations in April 2014, even though obviously this was held Wednesday. (NASA also put out a press release.) The event, while well attended - it was held in a packed lecture hall seating between 300 and 400 people, as compared to an event held a few years back at the uni with Garan, Coleman and Fossum in an auditorium holding 500 people - was not publicized on campus. There were no signage about the event, so you had to know from either the website or the NASA release. Most of those in attendance were, as to be expected, students, although there were probably about a dozen or so "civilians," including two or so cS members aside from myself. |

There was also a NASA press release that announced the University of Maryland event, and it was listed on Sightings. |

Karen Nyberg inscribed photos for my daughter and me today at the Go Boldly Expo in St. Paul, MN. The photos had a pre-printed signature. She was very friendly, and stopped to pose for photos with those who wanted them. |

Preprinted as in signed beforehand or preprinted as in autographed ahead of time? I believe she did the same at the NASASocial recently. |

Pre-printed as in the signature was printed as part of the photo, not hand signed. |

Can't say I'm at all impressed by pre-printed signatures, especially at a personal appearance. If there was a price tag of more than the cost of the photo, I'd be frustrated... |

The photo, and the event itself, were both free, and Karen was nice enough to pose for photos with anyone that asked, so it's tough for me to complain about it. |

Not complaining, just an observation: If she could inscribe, why couldn't she sign her name? I'm reminded of one astronaut, who pressed for time, still dedicated the lithos but signed with just their first name. Still another astronaut signed lithos before the event and everyone who attended got one, although the astronaut still took time to dedicate them or sign other stuff. |

Kathy Sullivan, a photo I sent on 21 March, received back 9 July.Someone must have taken the SASE to the Post Office because the envelope bore a tracking sticker as well as hand cancels. Because of the dark background, it was signed in silver, which was first tested on my letter (which was also returned to me, I guess as a way of matching up the letter with the photo.) There was also a form letter enclosed, dated 2014: "Dear Sir/Madam: Thank you for your continued interest in Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan. I hope that you find the returned item(s) to your [sic] satisfactory. Regards, Staff of Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan" |

Glad to hear you received your picture from Dr. Sullivan. I sent a pair of photos to her office (one for me and one for my daughter) and I haven't received them yet, even though I had a short email conversation with her secretary the week before.Your news gives me hope that we'll see our pictures soon! |

As it turns out, I did receive my photos from Dr. Sullivan today. So, it looks like a new batch has gone out. Unfortunately, they came back damaged. So, while I'm very grateful to Dr. Sullivan for her time, I am definitely disappointed. Will post about this shortly in the Advice section. |

It depends. It may be because there are fewer of them than male astronauts. But there are a fair number of them that do presentations and are speakers - Jemison, Melroy, Lawrence, and Magnus, off the top of my head and thus are publicly accessible. Like anything, all depends on the venue and the event - Hire surprised a number of people last year signing at the Naval Academy (where she was an attendee of an event, not a guest) yet didn't sign at all at the National Air and Space Museum the week before. |

The above doesn't surprise me too much. The difference is that when you're an advertised guest at an event, there may be a lot of people in attendance who will want your signature. (If you sign one signature for someone, it could suddenly become an impromptu autograph signing for dozens of people.) Whereas if you're just an attendee, the number of people who are there to get your autograph will be somewhat more limited. |
