In shock and disbelief I learned a view moments ago from the passing of Bruce McCandless.

At several ASE Planetary Congresses I had the opportunity to talk to him and his fantastic wife Ellen.

Two months ago, we had a long conversation at the Cité de l'espace in Toulouse. There he made a presentation on his flight at the community day. I sat next to his wife. Afterwards we had a long conversation about the French musician Jean-Michel Jarre.

I also remember Bruce McCandless wonderful presentation of extravehicular activity and the evolution steps of the MMU at the Planetary Congress in Sweden.

My thoughts and prayers go to his wife Ellen and his family. R.I.P. Bruce.

At the 2006 autograph show in San Antonio, I asked Gene Kranz if there was any particularly outstanding Capcom he recalled. Gene paused as if scrolling through a detailed mental list, and then pronounced without caveats: Bruce McCandless.

Another sad end to a year that has already taken too many heroes.

Such sad news. His untethered spacewalk was the inspirational poster I kept on my wall as a teen. Godspeed Bruce.

I met Bruce for the first time at Spacefest VIII in June. He struck me as one of the most content and happiest people on (and off) the planet. When I asked him what it was like floating alone in the MMU, he said, "It was actually very comfortable." What an understatement.

Recalling happier times, here are two photos from Spacefest that I think sum up the joy that was embodied in Bruce McCandless. The first shows him just after blowing out the candles on the birthday cake celebrating his 80th birthday. The second is a candid shot that captures a precious exchange between Bruce and a young space enthusiast. He listened intently, giving her all of his attention for the duration of her story. I wish I had heard what she was saying.

Farewell, Bruce. Float free among the heavens once more.

Had the honor of meeting him at Spacefest VII. I asked him about his role in the Hubble repair mission. He told me all about how he was involved in the overall planning of the mission.

Really sad news. December 2016-2017 has been a tough year, but it does make me all the more grateful for the memories from Spacefest and Autographica.

Will try to be there tomorrow, but I am still in disbelief and shock. I'm having a hard time putting words together at this moment as he was such a good man. Bruce McCandless is now one of the brightest stars shinning high above us in the heavens of space!

Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for December 31, 2017 has the most iconic picture of Bruce McCandless EVA. Simply awesome. Those were the days.

Good to see McCandless included in CBS Sunday Morning's Hail and Farewell tribute to those who died in 2017, alongside Joe Schmitt, Dick Gordon, Paul Weitz and Gene Cernan.

It has been a sad few months with loosing so many remarkable people many I have met and worked closely with at the Space Lectures events.

Bruce was our latest guest and from picking him and his lovely wife Ellen up at Manchester to their departure back to the US the whole time spent with them was delightful.

We considered it a great privilege that the Space Lectures Team and guests had the opportunity to not only be in awe of what Bruce had achieved but also see what a great human being he was.

God Speed Captain McCandless.
