Very sad news. But those images of his untethered spacewalk will live forever and, through them, he will be remembered for as long as people look at photographs.

I had the chance to meet Captain McCandless a few years ago at the Cosmosphere in Kansas. A true gentleman and a heck of a nice guy. You will be truly missed. RIP

While at Scott Carpenter's funeral, I was walking by a table and there was Bruce sitting all by himself. I practically dragged him over to our table with Dee O'Hara and several friends.

Nobody at the table knew that Bruce came from a rather interesting and heroic family. His great grandfather was shot by Wild Bill Hickok in Nebraska. His grandfather on his mother's side won the Medal of Honor in WW1 and his father won of the Medal of Honor in WW2. Even with such high standards to follow Bruce would have made them proud.

He was a lovely unassuming man who accomplished great things in his life. Another member of the band of explorers is gone and he will be missed.

RIP, Bruce.

I always wondered why he never got an Apollo fight assignment. He never even got a back-up slot until Skylab.

Very sad news. Bruce was the first Shuttle astronaut I ever met. A true gentleman and hero who will be sadly missed.

I was saddened to read of the loss of Bruce McCandless.

I was honoured to have interviewed him several times in the US and UK. He will always hold a special place in my heart and memory recalling the time I watched the Apollo 11 moonwalk unfold with my grandfather, hearing Bruce's voice as EVA Capcom, then finally meeting him 20 years later.

Bruce was instrumental in my research into my Walking in Space and Hubble servicing books. It was also an honour to have introduced him for his presentations at Autographica and share a table with him for a couple of meals away from the show.

A true pioneer of human spaceflight, Bruce was one of the 'original' cadre of American astronauts chosen across the first decade of human space exploration and his place in spaceflight history will forever remain in the iconic images of his EVA flight of the MMU.

A true gent, with a fascinating family history, he was always willing to help in my research. I expect he is catching up with PJ Weitz and Dick Gordon right now swopping flying stories... Clear skies and happy landings Bruce, RIP.

So sad to hear the news. I had the honour to meet him at an Autographica show in London many years ago, and he was so gracious smiling and talking to everyone. RIP
