I have often said how much I appreciated being born at a time when I could witness our first explorations off the planet.
The other side of that is facing my own mortality. The loss of a childhood hero makes me realize that there are more days behind me than in front of me.
In 2007, when Wally Schirra passed away, I drew a cartoon that depicted John Glenn and Scott Carpenter saluting a Flag at half mast in front of the Mercury 7 Monument at the Cape. It was heartfelt and well received.
Last night my muse woke me at 3:00 a.m. The result is this illustration. I titled it: "The Knights of Camelot"

My fondest memory of John Glenn is after a parade in Ohio in the 1970s. I mentioned what a good likeness of him was displayed in Friendship 7 at the Smithsonian. He joked, "My wife says that I'm the dummy!"
Thank you sir for your service.

The arrangements have been finalized for the Ohio public memorials honoring John Glenn, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Glenn will lie in state at the Ohio Statehouse rotunda from noon to 8 p.m. Friday. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board will meet Monday to approve an exemption that allows that.
Only governors and former governors, current and past Senate presidents and House speakers, current members of the General Assembly and statewide officeholders are eligible to lie in state there. Anyone else, Glenn included, requires an exemption.
A public memorial service will then be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Ohio State University's Mershon Auditorium.
Hank Wilson, of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University, said a public memorial service at Mershon Auditorium has been scheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 17. The event will be open to the public but tickets are required. They will be available through the college's website starting Thursday.
Glenn's hometown church, Westminster Presbyterian in New Concord, also planned a candlelight vigil with readings, singing and prayer to pay him tribute. That event was scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday.

Tim, that is such a moving tribute to the Original 7. I am going to hang a copy of it in my classroom tomorrow. I did spend several minutes discussing Col. Glenn in my U.S. History class and he will be the main topic in my Space Club meeting this week.

It was always a tremendous pleasure to see John Glenn introduce the guest speaker at National Air and Space Museum's annual John H Glen Lecture. Attended many and and saw him slow down physically but he never seemed to skip a beat mentally.

Thank you for your kind words about my tribute. It has been picked up by the Florida Today to be published tomorrow.
Artist Tim Gagnon, of Titusville, wanted to commemorate the Mercury 7 astronauts with last week's passing of John Glenn, the last surviving member. So he started drawing.

NASA Television to Air Programs Celebrating Space Pioneer John Glenn
NASA Television will air two programs live from Ohio celebrating the life of U.S. Marine, NASA astronaut and Ohio senator John Glenn today and Saturday, Dec. 17.
Visitors will pay their respects to Glenn from 4 to 7 p.m. EST Friday at the Ohio Statehouse rotunda, where he will lay in repose under the Ohio State seal, guarded for 24 hours by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard.
Saturday, Ohio State University in Columbus will host John Glenn: Celebrating a Life of Service at 2 p.m., during which NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will pay tribute to Glenn's early contributions to human spaceflight and enduring legacy. Both programs will air live on NASA TV and the agency's website.
One of NASA's original seven Mercury astronauts, Glenn, who died Dec. 8, also served 24 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and four terms as a U.S. senator from Ohio. His flight on Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962, showed the world that America was a serious contender in the space race with the Soviet Union. It also made Glenn an instant hero.

A great John Glenn tribute piece by Mark and Scott Kelly ran in today's Washington Post.
Two years before we were born and three decades before we each had the chance to leave our planet in a spaceship, our parents and 100 million other people heard the news: A 40-year-old Marine Corps lieutenant colonel named John Glenn had become the first American to orbit Earth.
To this day, Glenn’s journey remains as awe-inspiring as it was audacious. It was an act of patriotism and heroism in a life full of them.
The word “hero” gets thrown around a lot. But John Glenn defined it.

The life of John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, was celebrated at a public memorial service Saturday (Dec. 17), at Ohio State University in Columbus.
Glenn, who died on Dec. 8 at age 95, was remembered by his family, his friends and by colleagues from his careers as a Marine Corps pilot, original NASA astronaut, four term U.S. Senator and adjunct professor at the college bearing his name. The ceremony followed a Marine-led procession from the statehouse, where he was only the ninth person to lay in repose in Ohio's history.

Will Glenn be cremated as well as scatter his ashes at sea (just like Neil Armstrong); or will he be interred at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia?
