Astronaut Hank Hartsfield, led first flight of space shuttle Discovery, dies at 80

NASA astronaut Henry "Hank" Hartsfield, who in 1984 commanded the maiden mission of the space shuttle Discovery, died on Thursday (July 17). He was 80.

Hartsfield's death came as a result of complications from back surgery he had several months ago, according to his fellow astronaut and STS-41D crewmember Mike Mullane.

"Obviously, I have many, many memories of my time with Hank," Mullane wrote online on Thursday. "He was a great commander and pilot and I'll always feel honored to have been a member of his crew."

A moment of silence can be signified by a reply with no words and only a period.

Very sad to hear this news of Henry Hartsfield, who flown on STS-4 as the final test before the shuttle programme becomes operational, also the first astronauts to be greeted by the USA President Reagan after the landing. My thoughts goes to Hartsfield's families. R.I.P Hank

Very sad to hear. He was the first astronaut I ever met, back in 1979 at a philatelic event in New York. After his first flight on STS-4, I saw him and Ken Mattingly at a space exhibit set up at the old Gimbels department store in New York City. The nicest gentleman you could ever meet, and very accommodating to space philatelists, of which he was one. Fair winds and blue skies, Col. Hartsfield.

Very sad and shocked to hear that Hank passed away today. He was a very good friend of mine for years. I have lots and great memories especially to the 25th anniversary of STS-61A/Spacelab D-1 when we spent a week in Germany in Berlin, Bremen, Sinsheim and Speyer. As well as my lots of appointments with him in Houston.

You will always have a good place in my exhibition "Apollo and Beyond" and will be always remembered by me. R.I.P Hank

I had the pleasure of meeting Hank Hartsfield informally at a number of philatelic exhibitions. He was an avid stamp collector specializing in Austrian stamps. Hank was also kind enough to speak to a Space Unit meeting one year. He was an outstanding shuttle commander who was greatly admired by his crewmates. RIP.

Saddened to learn of the passing of Hank Hartsfield. A few years ago I met him at the ASF Autograph Show and gifted him with one of my MOL commemorative patches. He seemed genuinely pleased.

I asked him about what Mike Mullane wrote in "Riding Rockets" about flying over Cuba. He smiled and said he had nothing to add.

Godspeed sir and thank you.
