After the main engine shutdown during 41D's first launch attempt he was "volunteered" to be crew spokesman at the podium in KSC's press briefing room.

You could tell he didn't really want to be there and could add little to the technical discussion about the reason for the launch scrub.

G_d bless him and may he rest in peace.

I remember recording the audio from his STS-4 mission via a NASA hotline on July 4, 1982 and "listening" in to his words. I was glad to have seen him at the ASF event honoring the 40th anniversary of Apollo 16 at KSC in 2012.

RIP Mr. Hartsfield.

It was a pleasure to meet him at the first ASF show back in 2008, where he even recounted doing a waste dump while flying over Castro's Cuba.

My sincere condolences to his friends and family.

I regret never having the opportunity to meet the man, but feel very fortunate to have been present at Discovery's STS-41D launch, observed from CCAFS.

I was very fortunate to meet with him once at the Apollo 16 40th Anniversary ASF function. He was great fun and a very accomplished and understated individual.

Godspeed.

Is there any info on when the burial at Arlington will occur, and if it will be private? I might be traveling to the DC area in the next week and would pay my respects if I am able.

A date has not yet been set (or at least made public), according to the cemetery's website.
