I think that's what it was. The costs of the airseats. First class round trip fares from Moscow can be as much as ten grand or more. I cannot blame him for wanting to travel that distance as comfortable as he can. But I suspect the costs would prevent seeing him this side of the pond. |

Leonov and Kubasov have both been at three different autograph shows that Steve Hankow and Nolan Sims organized (Los Angeles, San Antonio and New Jersey). |

Those were commercial signings. I don't think the ASF would pay that kind of money for one guest. |

This just raised a thought in my head... in particular with the show in San Antonio, given the fact that Alexei Leonov, Valeri Kubasov, Pavel Popovich and Valentina Tereshkova were all at the show, was (and is) there a volume discount available on the airfare, possibly making the expense manageable? |

You're forgetting, the folks doing the autograph shows nowadays don't have Hankow's magic. |

It was Nolan Sims' "magic" and before Leonov's heart attacks, when he would fly coach.Maybe Leonov gave a mildew, crushing humidity, or power outage discount on travel. |

The Sims/Hankow shows were good events, some of the best. But there's a reason they aren't doing them anymore. They are horribly costly to produce. The expense of bringing astronauts, and especially cosmonauts continues to get more expensive. When we put the show on in 2004 at the Space Walk of Fame I was able to bring Yury Usachev over, by auctioning "A Day with Yury at KSC". The bidding went fast and furious and it was still a financial loss bringing him (although considerably offset by the wonderful bidders). |

Among their many other admirable qualities, I like that we have Al and Kim around to bring us down to earth at times. Unlike the majority of us, they know the hard-knuckle realities of putting on a show. I'm sure we all have dreams of meeting certain astronauts (Armstrong, Leonov, for example), but these guys are the ones who have to actually make it happen. They're kind of like the older brothers who smile at you when you want to do something crazy, but they know you're not going to EVER be able to do it. |

Some would say putting on a mega-event like the ASF show or Spacefest is crazy.ASF seems to do it effortlessly, for a bunch of girls (just kidding-if it wasn't for Sally...) Al will be our "astronaut wrangler" again at Spacefest. |

With all the remaining members of the Skylab crews attending this years AAMS, thinking out loud, it would be pretty amazing if the SMEAT crew of Crippen, Bobko and Thornton could attend. Wishful thinking, but it would be pretty great if it were possible. |

I agree, having the SMEAT crew would be great. Don't forget the back-up crews (Schweickart, Lind, Musgrave), we already have McCandless Skylab II back-up and Vance Brand Skylab II and IV back-up. Sadly Lenoir passed away a few weeks ago. |

Most are accommodating. But I find time is short and I get more out of just talking to them rather than fussing with a camera. Just a thought. Hope to see you there. By the way, welcome to cS! |

Good advice. I find that a few of the astronauts take it upon themselves to "work the room" and try to meet everyone, and some hang out in a group with other astros and chat ... which is fine too. Some attendees (in my experience) seem to think they they have a right to exclusive access to one or more of the astronauts, which can be frustrating for some other attendees. I have seen (on several occasions) an astronaut trying to extricate himself from a conversation that has run its course, and the attendee continues to try to extend the conversation while others are clearly standing by patiently waiting for an opportunity for a quick handshake and maybe a question or two. And, no ... I was not one of those waiting, but I observed the circumstances with some amusement and not a small amount of sympathy for the thus encumbered astronaut. Best bet is to enjoy the event, and maybe try not to monopolize the astronauts' time -- others would like to chat with them too. |

I have a medium sized poster that I need to complete with a Lovell signature and I'm not getting over from New Zealand this year. Is there a cSer out there who would be in the Lovell Line who would be willing to get this signed for me and posted back to New Zealand? Please contact me off line if you're able to help. Please, I need some advice. I have a Moonpans 8" X 40" print of Apollo 17; "Commnader Cernan is working at the lunar rover". I want to get as many of the Apollo astronauts attending this ASF show as I can to sign it, including Scott C, and maybe even a few more guys (Brand, Lousma, etc). How many autographs can I get on this print before it looks too gaudy? |

I am excited about the upcoming shuttle launch and astronaut show, less than a month! I have a few questions since this is a first time for me.Will Gene Kranz be in attendance of the ASF show? I'd love to meet the man himself who oversaw the Houston side of Apollo 13 and possibly get him to sign a part off a pinball machine for me! How about Ed Fendell? I'm disappointed that I was unable to make it down to the Cape before having the chance to meet Guenter Wendt! Any other non-astronaut types going to be at the signing show? Any tips for a first time show attendee? Are the lines pretty long or is it pretty quick 15-30 minutes each? Do the astronauts get upset if you want a specific inscription? I've had a few things signed now by celebrities and one moonwalker I went to meet. I've found its a lot easier to have what I'm asking to be written on a post-it note and tape off or put a cutout piece of paper over the area that I want the signature at... Any additional tips/advice for the show?? Any CAN'T MISS THIS events while down watching the shuttle launch and going to at least one day of the ASF signing show? I'm stoked and can hardly wait to meet and hear some astronaut and space flight experience talk first hand... |

Sorry for all the questions guys, I forgot at least one more though!Do you think Dave Scott would sign "Man must explore... and this is exploration at its greatest!" on a piece of Lunar Lander memorabilia? I've read mixed reviews on what he will write down and what he won't... I'm trying to figure out who to give the larger signature area to and I'd love a great epic Apollo quote on there but if people don't think he won't sign it quoted like that I'll save the big spot for someone else and give him a smaller zone. What other activities are there at the ASF show weekend other than signing? I have a sweet piece of Lunar Lander Americana/memorabilia I want to get loaded with Apollo moon walker and LEM spaceflight signatures. I've read that Buzz is strict on his pricing, that's fine I'm expecting it, I'll have to put it on a flat piece so I don't get hit 3D and keep it short and sweet... Does Buzz do handshake pics included with a signature? Is he chatty with his fans for the price? Any astronauts that I should pay extra attention not to offend? Obviously approach them calm and with respect, but is there any red flags to make sure and avoid? Also will there be ANY other Apollo 9 guys than Dave Scott? I'm hoping one of the men who flew the LEM for the first time. I saw that Jim McDivott was signing through the mail for Novaspace but I can't assure I'd get my piece back in time for the ASF show so I go to sadly skip out on sending it and risking not having it when I leave for Florida! |

How busy you are that weekend will depend upon the type of ticket you have. Platinum and Platinum Plus ticket holders have a pretty full weekend. I don't know if Dave Scott will sign that full inscription. He may do it, but may also charge extra for the long inscription. It may depend on how busy he is. The astronauts themselves are all pretty friendly. I have heard some negative stories about Buzz and Dave Scott. Personally I have never experienced any issues with either of them. I found Dave Scott to be reserved but he was not unpleasant. Beyond his fee, which is more than I will pay, at last years show I found Buzz to be friendly and willing to talk, shake hands and pose for photos. But that goes for all of the astronauts I have met. Sadly there is one person who will be greatly missed at this years show. Guenter Wendt. |

I have heard that Dave Scott no longer wishes to inscribe his own quotations on autographed items. I believe he had a "no quotes" rule for his last Novaspace signing...and I know at least one person who was unable to get the "Man must explore..." quotation signed from him. Of course, you can always politely ask if he's willing to do so...since he may change his policy depending on his mood. He may surprise you and say "yes," but be prepared for a "no" answer and have a backup plan in place, just in case... quote: Originally posted by FullThrottle: Any astronauts that I should pay extra attention not to offend? The best thing to do is to free yourself of expectations and just take the encounters as they happen. As long as you are friendly and polite, you can generally expect the same in return. |

Does anyone have experience with Dave Scott signing letter covers? I know some astronauts will not sign them. I have seen covers that he has signed but thought with his past experience he might decline. I don't want to bring a cover to the show only to find he will not sign it.Can anyone shed some light? |

Dave Scott has been willing to sign philatelic covers at recent shows, so it should not be a problem. |

I cannot say definitively whether there will be photos and lithos avaialble, although I would be very surprised if they are not. However, my advice would be to not count on the photos and lithos being the shots you want, or the quality you want. I have seen at some shows non-NASA lithos that are not great quality, along with some photos that were very high quality and shots I had not seen before. So, to summarize, decide what you want to have signed in advance, and obtain those items to bring with you. Then, once you get there, check out what is available and decide if you want to get those photos signed instead of or in addition to the ones you brought. That way you won't end up being disappointed. Look at this event as a one-time good deal -- you may get all 8 living Skylab astronauts in one place at the same time again, but what are the odds? Take advantage of the opportunity now, and you won't have regrets later. And, no, I don't get a commission from the ASF. |

At Autographica in September of last year, I asked Dave Scott to sign his 'Man Must Explore' quote for me on a photo of him on the Moon - he politely declined, but it still looks quite nice with just the personalization and mission inscription (Apollo 15 CDR).I also brought along an Apollo 9 cover already signed by McDivitt and Schweickart, and he agreed to sign this without hesitation. You'll enjoy meeting him - I found him to be extremely polite and it was an absolute pleasure to meet him! |

In my experience cash has always been accepted, and most astronauts accept credit cards (ask my friend Steve S!). If you plan to use a credit card, I suggest that you call the credit card company prior to the event and inform them that you will be making a lot of purchases that weekend adding up to lots and lots of $$. |

Some astronauts only accepted cash: Jack Lousma and Dick Gordon only took cash at both Spacefest and last year's ASF. There's an ATM near the entrance to the Visitors Complex.I definitely agree about calling your credit card company in advance. Mine was shut down last year after obtaining 5 or 6 autographs in a half-hour period. There were a LOT of us standing around on our cell phones, calling our banks to get our cards re-activated! Multiple high-dollar transactions to the same vendor [in this case, ASF] in a short period of time is one of the key triggers of a fraud alert. Be thankful that the companies do it for your protection...but it sure can be a pain in the a$$ if you're in a hurry, and an embarrassment to have an astronaut's wife (in my case, Bev Brand) tell you that your card has been declined. |

I agree with the call your card holder in advance approach. I was with Bean when it happened to me. I had enough cash to cover it but it was embarrassing. |
