I wonder how many have spotted the latest listing in the "sightings" section of collectSPACE?I stumbled across the listing SpaceFest earlier today and could hardly contain my excitement. Already confirmed to attend are Eugene Cernan, Bruce McCandless, Jim McDivitt and Frank Borman!! 50% of those names I mentioned have never attended an organised public signing event before and I for one can only hope that some other astronauts that Kim has had attend his gallery in Tucson for signings can be encouraged to attend this event. Kudos to Kim and to everyone else involved with this event!! Best regards to all, Derek |

We are now on the downhill slope for banquet reservations. All since mid-August. We expect all will be filled by Christmas. $99 if you register online at: www.spacefest.info/Register.html We will not only be selling 8x10 photos, but also 16x20s Moonpans (Mike Constantine is attending) but also a selection of astronaut books. We will also pre-publish the various fees for autographs, and any additional fees (if any) for inscriptions, personalizations, etc., in the program booklet. Kim Poor SpaceFest 2007 |

The Spacefest banquet is now more than 3/4 sold out (152/200). We expect it to be sold out around the first of the year. Our first auction will be a dutch auction for the 6 seats at John Young's table in early January. You must have banquet reservation(s) to participate. Kim Poor www.spacefest.info |

Are all the seats going to be on auction for all the guests or are those that registered early getting any preference? Could you please list all the seats that you will auction before you start - this way if the Young seats go high, we could bid on Aldrin or Cernan, etc. BTW - 6 seats per table - 200 people = 33.33 guests? So will there be seats that some will get by chance? |

Young has only six seats left out of 10. We expect seats at the Young table will go for the highest. Borman, Aldrin and Cernan will follow. Most seating will be by preference, and we will be asking for seating and meal preferences probably after the 1st of the year.Kim

Just wondering where the money from the table auction is going. Does it go to a charity like the ASF? Maybe I missed the discussion about this. I don't remember seeing anything on the website. Leon |

It goes to the same place Silver, Gold, and Platinum membership money goes at the UACC shows, namely to guest costs and other overhead. We think the auction system is fairer.P.S. The link to the "auction" statement is: http://www.novaspace.com/Spacefest/Banquet.html Kim |

I signed up my wife, my son and myself for the banquet. Obviously we'd all like to sit together. How will that work?If I bid at the auction and win, does my family get to sit with me, or does everyone in my party have to bid? Just curious. Rizz |

Good question. In a dutch auction you bid on the number of items wanted (seats in this case) X your bid. We're only going to auction off seats at tables where there is a lot more interest than seats. We're figuring four or five tables. We'll be polling folks for seating preferences and menu choices after the New Year. Kim |

I know we're all going to see and hear the astronauts, but for those of us staying a day or two longer what are the key things to go and see/do within two hours of Phoenix?I've got Pima Air Museum/AMARC in my sights but what are the other must-sees - historic, cultural or scenic? Paul |

A year ago I drove from Phoenix to the meteor crater in about 3 hours. The scenery along the way was unbelievable and the changes in topography were amazing. The meteor crater itself is one of the most awe-inspiring places I've ever visited. It is well worth the drive. |

I also highly recommend Meteor Crater. As a fairly "small" crater, it's interesting to see just how large it is. Most of us won't get to stand on the moon to see a crater, but this is the next closest thing...and it shows relatively little weathering. Note that the astronauts did some of the geology training here in the mid-60s. The guide pointed out some beer cans in a small storage cave next to where the old house used to be. He claimed those were beer cans left over from when the astronauts visited. For other things to do in the Phoenix area, Frank Lloyd Wright fans should visit his Taliesin West home in Scottsdale. Not for everyone, of course, but FLLW enthusiasts shouldn't miss it. I visited Arizona in 2001 and saw: - Taliesin West
- Pima Air and Space Museum
- Kitt Peak (spent an evening observing there)
- Saguaro National Forest
- Sedona
- USGS Astrogeology
- Lowell Observatory
- Meteor Crater
- Grand Canyon
- Monument Valley
- Petrified Forest
- Canyon de Chelly
Everything was great. If I went back again, I'd definitely want to see the USAF Boneyard and the Titan Missle Museum. |

Does anyone know if the general public can visit the USAF Boneyard? How do you find the information on the visit? Do they allow the public to buy items from the Boneyard? |

See the website: http://www.dm.af.mil/units/amarc.asp I heard you could buy titanium for $1 a lb., but that was years ago. It's best just driving through in your air-conditioned car, seeing, for example miles of B-58s wing to wing, never to fly again. Kim www.spacefest.info |

I took a bus tour there a few years ago via the shuttle bus tour they offered. It was really interesting. At the time the B-1s were just starting to show up. Like Kim mentions you see rows upon rows of identical planes. It is really a jaw dropping tour. I only wish that the bus would have driven slower.------------------ Kind Regards Douglas Henry Enjoy yourself and have fun.... it is only a hobby! http://home.earthlink.net/~aztecdoug/ |

To see the boneyard from the air, go to Google Earth (which you should download and put on your computer anyway...for endless hours of time wasting fun) and view these coordinates:32° 09'42.44" N 110° 50'37.87" W View from an eye altitude of 15,000 feet and see pretty much the whole site. Zoom in for greater detail and have fun identifying the planes based on their shapes. Lots of B-52s, F-16s, F-4s out there. I was surprised to see several older types there too...T-33s, F-102s, etc. There's a real mixed bag in some areas of the boneyard. |

From the information I got- the BoneYard is not open to the public. You can only go through it on a tour bus from the PIMA museum and it just drives the main drive. I was told that you can drive around the fence in your car, but the items inside are closed off and you cannot go inside without the bus tour.

We're getting lots of inquiries about mail-in items to be signed at Spacefest. Our mail-in signings take weeks of prep and processing before and after, and 100% concentration during. Spacefest is like a five-ring circus, and the staff (and many volunteers) will be up to our necks in handling duties and problems, so there is no way we can get things signed by different astronauts for customers, at least not to anyone's standards. Report to come.Today (Jan. 31) is the last day to register for $15-day/$25-all weekend, and hotel rooms are nearly 1/3 sold out already. Ladies and Gents - it gives me grand pleasure to announce that a Golden Age of Test flight pioneer, BGEN Robert M. "Bob" Cardenas, will be joining us at Spacefest. If the interest is there for a talk he will certainly oblige. He will be available to sign autographs during the show, and will host a banquet table as well.Best known for being the launch pilot of the B-29 and Ops Officer in Charge of the mach 1 flight by yeager, and the chief test pilot for the YB-49 after Glen Edwards died in one; he is oh so much more. More info on him can be found at: http://members.tripod.com/derekhorne/cardenas.html http://www.af.mil/bios/bio.asp?bioID=4917 (a downloadable hi res photo of the General is available on the USAF site). And his personal site: http://www.bobcardenasyb49.com I will see about uploading some hi resolution images to the site you can print out, but we should have some photos available at the show as well. Thanks to the efforts of Derek Horne and some others who have pledged financial support to bring him - I have not had a chance to poll the folks contributing to see if they want their names known but if they'd like I would like to publicly thank them (although there is a thread about this here so it's truly no secret). Still working on some other test pilots yet. See you in August! |
