Anyone up for taking a couple of items for me to be signed by Cernan and Smyth? I haven't had much luck with these requests in the past but I can't ever make these shows because I travel so danged much and its the only chance you get to have items signed. I'll be in DC this go around, I was in San Fran for the UACC show. I'd appreciate any help. If you are up for it, email me. |

Oooh! That would be a great addition. Granted, I'm a geologist, so that kind of thing turns my crank. Now if you could just add Leon Silver, that would be super fantastic (as if it isn't already a stellar lineup). Tell Leon that he'd be able to meet up with Dave Scott, John Young, Charlie Duke, and Gene Cernan again. It would be a great little reunion! |

Just wanted to say thanks to Kim and the gang for gathering and posting the fees for the show. I think everyone appreciates even a rough guess so they can budget and decide what to bring.a good trend which will hopefully catch on for the other shows. thanks Kim! |

Getting everyone to name their fees was like pulling teeth, And one refuses to take part. I can understand why it has never been done before.Yes, Kittinger will sign autographs, (for free) but limited per person. Probably after his talk, which we've scheduled for Fri morning. Yeah Phoenix is hot, but I never sweat so much as in Houston's summer, and seating evaporates in PHX, cooling you. Sweat doesn't evaporate @ 95% humidity. You just get soaked. Real attractive. Tracy, aren't you on the wrong forum? The other thread needs more of your superlatives to keep it alive!Kim www.spacefest.info |

In re: Kittinger - keep in mind he's not attending as an autograph guest, but rather a speaker. He is traditionally amenable to signing an item per person, however. If he agrees, it will most probably be after his talk(s) in the same room. So you'll have to attend his talk! |

Sorry to see that Jim McDivitt will not be there (although the website says he will (in November) sign items left at the show). Just made my flight reservations-- I am really excited to hear some of the talks. Has a schedule of the talks been posted yet? David |

Working hard on it. I'm trying not to have conflicting talks, as there will be two simultaneous tracks. We just sent out a "finished" schedule to the speakers. and we want to wait until they OK it. I can give you a rough idea, David, if you have some speakers in mind. Kim www.spacefest.info |

John/Douglas-Enjoy your dinner with Ed Mitchell. I had the opportunity to sit with him during the UACC show this past June and I had an outstanding time. I've always found him to very reserved and quiet in public, but found him to be very open and talkative during our dinner. Really was a pleasure - enjoy! Rob |

Doug - greatly look forward to meeting you and the Mrs. My wife is running a conference the same week, so we'll miss her :-( It is always a blast to share time with fellow enthusiasts, and who doesn't look forward to dinner with a Moonwalker?Rob - Yes, he's always seemed like an intriguing guy on many levels. I only had a brief chat with Dr Mitchell at UACC last year, and hope to grab some more of his unique insights this summer. John W |

I had the honor of sitting next to Dr. Mitchell at the 2006 UACC show and we had quite the chat! We share many views, and we had quite a spirited discussion that involved most of the table near the end of the dinner. My wife and I spent some time with him at the Friday night get together in June (he knew the shortcut to get back to Coco Beach after a launch while the rest of us got caught in the traffic jam)and we had a great talk there as well. He is definitely a man of firm convictions! Steve |

With both McDivitt and Borman now canceled I'm concidering not even going. With Kerwin and Walker being the only Astronauts attending that I haven't met before I don't know if the money I will be spending to attend will be worth it now. Unless Kim can get some other Astronauts that haven't done other shows to attend I may have a tough decision to make. Mark |

Consider all of the good stuff that still remains. There will be at least one moonwalker from each landing mission in attendance. Seven of the nine surviving moonwalkers will be there. That's just something you don't see very often. Plus, for me, the attendance of the test pilots pushes the event over the top. The chance to meet guys like Cardenas, Kittinger, Chiltstrom, etc. is something I dare not pass up. Finally, the variety of speakers in attendance means a wide selection of topics that will be spoken about. The talks will be a BIG part of this event. This is so much more than simply an autograph show. So yeah, I think you should still come! |

Even though the two men I wanted to meet the MOST aren't attending I still think this should be a very enjoyable and memorable show. I've never met Cunningham, Cernan, Bean, Kerwin, Weitz, Walker, Smyth, Kittinger & Chilstrom before... so there's still lots to look forward to. - Derek |

As a complete rookie in these types of shows....how accessible are the astronauts? Do you only get to talk to them if you buy their autographs or attend the banquet? |

Well, that's the best way, but the astros for the most part are very accessible. While I wouldn't wake them up in the middle of the night, you can catch them after-hours in the bar or lounge, buy them dinner, catch them on the elevator, pose for photos, after a talk, or just ask an unusual question. DON"T ask "how did it really feel to walk on the moon?" Kim |

I'm a little upset, both Borman and McDivitt were two astronauts that I haven't met and the reason I planned on coming to the show. I have a $1000 in plane tickets, hotel reservations, car rental, etc. and personally think it's a little late to be backing out. If its a family crisis that's one thing, but if they commited, then? If you can't plan a trip to one of these shows and know until the last moment who's going to be there, then why bother. I know I'm going to catch flack for saying this, but I know I'm not the only. |

Seven moonwalkers, multiple legendary astronauts and test pilots, a banquet, three days of talks, a space art show, three screenings of The Wonder of It All, and a chance to meet my fellow CSers adds up to be one HUGE reason why I would bother attending. Like many people, McDivitt and Borman were big reasons for me wanting to attend, but they weren't my only reasons. Instead of dwelling on what has been lost, I am looking forward to all that remains. And, by my count, there is A LOT that remains. Astronauts like Borman don't break their commitments lightly. Anyone who feels upset about his dropping out will likely be embarrassed once they know why he had to cancel (...as Al said earlier, keep the Bormans in your thoughts and prayers). Quite simply, this is a time when Borman needs to be with his family and not spending time at Spacefest just to make me happy. In fact, I would personally feel mighty guilty if he felt like he had to come and entertain us at this moment in time. |

I can understand your frustration about Borman and McDivitt not attending the show. However, I'm sure that these gentlemen would not cancel unless it was for a good reason. Whatever the reason, I think we should respect their decision. I for one was really looking forward to meeting both gentlemen myself. However, if you look at the rest of the show venue, there is so much to this event. Not only are there astronauts attending, but test pilots, artists, speakers, etc. In fact, I believe this show will redefine what future space shows will look like. The autograph part is just one part of this great event. If I know Kim and his staff, the next show is already being planned out. I can only anticipate who will be coming to the show next year. I think alot of credit should go to Kim, Sally, Al, Gerry and the rest of the staff for putting together such a great anticipated event.Let the countdown begin ........... See you all there. Best, Bob

Hi guys, Like others,I'm very disappointed that Borman and McDivitt cannot attend the show. I've been lucky enough to have met most of the other astronauts. However, if I may tell a story. A few years ago, I had an autumn coach-touring holiday in Arizona. As we crossed the Sonoran desert, lightning was flashing in the distance, and heavy rainclouds were approaching. At the Old Tucson film set, the ground was already sodden from the rain. As promised, the re-enactors (men and women) came out to perform their gunfight. Right on cue, the heavens opened with a crack of thunder. In the true "Spirit of the Old West" they carried on through the violent thunderstorm (we of course were sheltering on the sidewalks!). They were well applauded. As a finale to this vacation, when we arrived at the Grand Canyon they'd had several inches of snow! It wasn't the holiday I'd expected, but I got some fine and unusual photographs. In short, when life throws you a bowl of lemons, try making some lemonade (a rather appropriate comment for a "limey"!) |

"Astronauts like Borman don't break their commitments lightly. Anyone who feels upset about his dropping out will likely be embarrassed once they know why he had to cancel."I think you ought to ease up on the guilt trip. Being understanding and respectful of their reasons for cancelling while being frustrated about it are both valid and not mutually exclusive points of view. All the other events at the show notwithstanding, there ARE people who planned on making the trip only due to the advertised presence of Borman and McDivitt, and that's to be respected as well. Knowing the integrity and honor of these gentlemen tells me that they must have had very compelling reasons for not coming. I respect that and in the Borman's case, send them my thoughts and prayers for whatever they are facing, and dealing with that should be their only priority right now. Having said that, it doesn't make the situation any less frustrating for those who make extensive plans to be there only to see them, and anyone who wants to vent a little about it then that's OK too if that's their choice. Stepping off the soapbox now! Best wishes, thoughts and prayers to the Borman family. SW

It wasn't meant to be a guilt trip. But if it came across that way, I apologize. I just know that whatever disappointment and frustration I initially felt over the cancellation has quickly gone away and has been replaced with concern for the Borman family. Also, I had greater reason than most to be disappointed by the cancellation, as I had won the opportunity (via the auction) to sit with Borman at the banquet. And, like yourself, I have over $1000 already invested in my attendance of this event. I know I can choose to dwell on who isn't there...or I can instead choose to enjoy all that still remains on the bill. I will personally choose the later, as I'll have a lot more fun that way. I am particularly looking forward to the chance to meet many fellow CSers there, which is icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Hope to see you all there! |
