Stars and Stripes release
Space Force troops get lapel pin and badge to wear on their Air Force uniforms for now

Space Force service members will soon get lapel pins and service badges to wear on their Air Force dress uniforms to better distinguish the branches.

Above: The Space Force lapel pin. left, and the service badge, right, will be how service members in the newest military branch distinguish themselves from airmen for now. (USSF)

Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, the senior enlisted leader for Space Force, unveiled a lapel pin and service badge for service members of the military's newest branch to display on their Air Force uniforms.

"This is how we're going to space up the Air Force uniform while we're wearing it," Towberman said last week in a video announcing the new pin. "It doesn't mean we'll carry this onto a Space Force uniform when it's designed."

He said the specific policy on the appropriate way to wear the pin and badge will be out later this month. In the announcement, Towberman was wearing the service badge in the middle of his chest pocket and the pin on the middle of the collar.

Troops in Space Force also wear the Operational Camouflage Pattern, or OCP, as the normal duty uniform, the same uniform worn by the Army.

The OCP uniforms are worn essentially the same way as the Army. However, tapes and badges will have "space blue" embroidery. Troops also will wear a space blue name tape on the back of their patrol caps, according to regulations published in August.

Almost anything acceptable on the OCP uniform, including coyote brown boots, a rigger or standard-issue brown belt, the standard-issue brown fleece jacket and green or brown socks are approved.

Space Force also does not yet have its own uniform for physical training.

Space Force has roughly 2,000 personnel, most of whom are transfers from the Air Force, though the service has recently started enlisting new recruits. Space Force hopes to recruit 300 enlisted service members in 2021 and reach 6,500 members overall in a year. Most will come from Air Force transfers.

The badge on the right is only worn by members assigned to the Chief of Space Operations' staff.

Expedition 64 crewmates Mike Hopkins (soon to be a member of the U.S. Space Force) and Victor Glover shared a birthday shout-out from the space station.

U.S. Space Force release
Space Force unveils name of space professionals

Today, after a yearlong process that produced hundreds of submissions and research involving space professionals and members of the general public, we can finally share with you the name by which we will be known: Guardians.

The opportunity to name a force is a momentous responsibility. Guardians is a name with a long history in space operations, tracing back to the original command motto of Air Force Space Command in 1983, "Guardians of the High Frontier."

The name Guardians connects our proud heritage and culture to the important mission we execute 24/7, protecting the people and interest of the U.S. and its allies.

Guardians. Semper Supra!

I just do not get it. We had universal respect and cooperation for NASA. Why do we need these hokey names and silly titles? It's like an sci-fi club decided on program names.

In newspaper articles preceding the announcement of the Mercury 7, the term "astronaut" was put in quotes, as it was new and no doubt considered by some to sound "hokey." Prior to 1959, "astronaut" was a slang term sometimes used to describe scientists and enthusiasts studying astronautical topics.

What sounds odd today will more than likely seem commonplace tomorrow.

Army has soldiers, the Navy has sailors and the Air Force has airmen. The Space Force can't use space cadet or spacemen because like you said, can't be hokey. Guardian has some legacy.

As an original cadre member of Air Force Space Command, I love the name Guardians. The name is a nod to what we were and takes our legacy forward into the 21st century.

I’m sure I’ll get used to it but right now it sure does sound hokey.

You may be right Robert, but I don't remember astronaut in comic books or movies in 1959, but sure remember space force, guardians (of the galaxy), or guardians in X-Men. Like others said, will get used to, but just how I feel now.

Publications, forms, websites, and systems will reflect these grade changes beginning Feb. 1, but it may take time for all systems to reflect the change.

Guardians will wear Air Force rank insignia until the Space Force finalizes its own rank insignia designs, which is expected sometime in the coming months. The service will announce opportunities for Guardians to contribute feedback during the design process.

Crowdsourced feedback on rank names was collected from the field and was part of the decision-making process.

This change does not trigger the need to update the member's common access card. The service will issue guidance on updating to a Space Force CAC when those details are finalized.

No change was needed other than airman ranks, so there wasn't anything to underwhelm. No need to change them to something new just to be different.

There is in fact, a serious concern by members in the military space community that the USSF needs to be trying a lot harder to be distinguishing itself from the USAF both cosmetically and operationally.

Hence, the proposal either for naval ranks, or something else different.

Obviously not, since USSF chose not to be different.

After a question was raised (and a joke was made) about the Space Force under the Biden Administration, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said today:
They [the Space Force] has the full support of the Biden Administration and we are not revisiting the decision to establish the Space Force.

The desire of the Department of Defense to focus greater attention and resources on the growing security challenges in space has long been a bipartisan issue informed by numerous independent commissions and studies conducted across multiple administrations. Thousands of men and women proudly serve in the Space Force.

Psaki also tweeted on Tuesday (Feb. 2):
We look forward to the continuing work of Space Force and invite the members of the team to come visit us in the briefing room anytime to share an update on their important work.

Space Force renames Florida space wing as Space Launch Delta 45

The "world's premier gateway to space" now has a new name.

The 45th Space Wing at Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida was redesignated as Space Launch Delta 45 on Tuesday (May 11). The changeover continues the reorganization of Air Force installations to the Space Force since the latter was founded in 2019.

The Space Force has its own service dress uniform:
The U.S. military's newest service unveiled its prototype dress uniform at the Air Force Association's Air Space & Cyber conference in National Harbor, Maryland...

The uniform is a marked departure from the dress blues of the Air Force, from which the Space Force was spun off in 2019. It has a dark navy coat that buttons on the right-hand side, unlike the Air Force coat that buttons in the middle, and gray pants.

Raymond said the coat's six buttons — which bear the Space Force emblem — are meant to represent its status as the military's sixth service.

Emphasis on "prototype." General Raymond said there will be a handful rolled out for feedback purposes this year, and changes will be finalized by the end of the year, with wear testing in 2022.

Rank insignia was also introduced last week, which is finalized.

At first glance this uniform option looks as if it has been supplied by the same company that makes bellhop and concierge uniforms for hotel chains.

The U.S. Space Force adopted its own song titled "Semper Supra" that was unveiled during the 2022 Air Force Association Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, Sept. 20, 2022.
