Robert, I am very sorry to hear of your losses. As you already know from your grandmother's passing, the days to come will be trying at times. Sorrow. Mournful. Numbness. Unreal. Even relief, in that all pain is gone. These words represent deep feelings that are difficult to explain during these times. These are things that I experienced not even a year and a half ago when my mom also lost her brave battle to cancer.Like your mom, my mom nurtured my interest in spaceflight. Just seven years old, one of my earliest and fondest memories is sitting with her watching a little B&W TV as Neil and Buzz walked on the Moon. Many years later, she always wanted to see what photos I had taken each time I returned from a launch or other function at KSC. She even accompanied me to watch two shuttle launches, one being at the VIP creek site. My mom was amazed that she actually saw people being launched into space right there so close. As I've told many people, my mom also explained to her friends that unless you actually saw a launch in person, there was really no way to verbally convey what it was really like. Robert, you undoubtedly have many stories and memories such as these, among many others about your mom and grandmother. They will be with you and comfort you for all of your years. Cherish them always. After reading your initial post, and I know that it's just the surface of your relationship with your mom, I am certain that she was, and is, extremely happy for you, and very proud. Very proud. Know that you are not alone. Many hearts and prayers are with you, Robert, from your extended family here on cS. With deepest sympathy, Rob |

Robert, I am SO SO SORRY to hear of your Mom's passing. You were so lucky to have had such a close relationship with her. Not many mothers get involved in their kids interests like she did. I agree that 65 is way too young. She sounds like she was a really AMAZING person!! I'm sure she would like you to remember she lived and forget that she passed. Yow Have wonderful memories!! Robert, you, your Mom and entire family are in our thoughts and prayers. Stay Well!!! Sincerely Mike |

Robert, I had the pleasure of meeting your mom at an astronaut signing event and dinner in New Jersey back in 2003-4 I think. She was a very nice and sweet lady. Sorry to hear about your loss. |

Mom is very proud of you, and she raised a kid that we are all very envious of (I know I am!) for living your dream and passion for spaceflight through collectSPACE and other connections. Deepest condolences to you and your family. Your friend in Seattle, Tom . |

Robert, Very sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my Mom 12 years ago,and my favorite memories of her were allowing me to remain home from school during the Gemini and early Apollo days to sit in front of the TV with my reel to reel tape recorder and get every last bit of the TV telecasts on tape.. along with her commentary of course. She cultivated my interest in space, and your Mom.. thru you.. has allowed me to continue proudly in those endeavors. |

I wasn't able to get on collectSPACE until today. I knew Robert's mom was ill, but I was hoping and praying for the best.I think we can all say that Robert's mother raised one heck of a good kid to grow up with a passion and drive to form this website and allow us the opportunity to take part in this community. That is a great legacy we can all appreciate. So we share in the loss in our own ways. I only wish I had the chance to meet her in person. |

Thank you everyone for your very kind words of condolence, friendship and care. They have provided a source of strength and comfort.I am very grateful to this community, more than I can express in this reply. My thanks to you all. quote: Originally posted by MarylandSpace: Did your mother have a favorite charity or organization that I can make a memorial contribution to?
My mother was in the care of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan when she passed. Her doctors there, as well as the nursing staff, were excellent and made her final months as comfortable as possible. We know that had she lived, my mom would have wanted to support the ongoing care and research at Sloan-Kettering.To that end, my sister and I have set up an MSKCC giving page, where memorials may be made, if desired. |
