I have come across this "Phases of the Moon" cover that has a Kennedy Space Center (KSC) cancellation instead of a USS Okinawa cancellation. The seller says that it is not a forgery or suspect and that it is one of the covers that was returned to Worden after he left NASA. What do members think about these covers? Flown or not flown? Thank you. |

Gareth, good question. It is postmarked on the day of the launch and addressed to the man that gave the 144 covers to Al Worden to fly on Apollo 15. No where is the caption included with the cover does it indicate that that particular cover was flown. I would say not flown.Really interesting story about those covers. The early sale of them in New York City by Herrick triggered the whole Apollo 15 cover mess. |

Larry is correct - the cover was not flown.Long ago, before cell phones to get photos, I met a dealer who had six of these covers plus correspondence between Herrick and Al Worden about them and nowhere in the correspondnce was any reference to them being flown. The dealer wanted too high a price for me to purchase. As noted, the stuffer does not state anything about them being flown - just, we hope you will enjoy the autographed cover. Though I do like the spelling of 'Appolo" ..... |

Agreed. I have some theories about the Herrick/Worden covers (see my other postings that Ross provided above from 2007 and 2012) as there are a few different types that I consider as "souvenir" cover issues by the Miami stamp dealer. |

The Apollo 15 covers 'scandal' has always intrigued me. But in regards as to how NASA learned of the covers the crew prepared and were being sold; I always assumed it was the infamous 'Sieger' covers (398) inside Scott's space suit pocket that were the direct evidence of the unauthorized, flown covers on the mission. As is known, some covers were ok'd by NASA to travel inside the crew PPKs. |

As I understand it there was no issue with the covers being flown even if not officially on the flight log as many items flew without official NASA approval but there was an understanding that no items from the missions including covers would be sold while the astronauts were on active duty. NASA did not want the American Public to assume our tax dollars were being used to enrich the astronauts or more important a German stamp dealers. Crew member had been given many mission items including checklists, flags, patches, Robbins medallions and so much more after the missions Had Dave Scott waited until after the astronauts left active duty to sell the covers I do not believe there would have been any back lash. JUST MY OPINION! |
