Has anyone purchased an item from Walt Cunningham's website?

I purchased an Apollo 7 flown Beta cloth patch a month ago and have not had any updates. I sent a message asking about shipping, but no reply. Is this normal?

I’m sure that he is very busy, but I would assume that he would have an assistant to handle this sort of thing. Any advice would be appreciated.

From what I have heard, he does it all himself. I have seen people post that it has taken several months to get it.

Thanks so much! I’ll just be patient. If he is like me, then it will take 6 months. Haha!

I ordered a flown Beta Cloth patch last year, and it took several months to arrive. Walt and his wife handle everything themselves. And at age 89, things just aren't always easy. Walt keeps those patches in a safety deposit box, so he doesn't have immediate access to them. And with a pandemic, extra precautions and limited public appearances are important. I think it took about 5 months to get mine.

A few months ago, I sent Walt a Beta Cloth name tag to be signed. I had a conversation with him last week, and he mentioned that he was getting a batch of orders ready for shipment. So it may take some time, but it sounds like things should be shipping soon.

I know it can be tempting to write and ask for updates, but that just adds to the stack of emails and orders to sort through, and it can get very confusing. So for anyone waiting on orders, I'd recommend patience. Asking for updates will likely make things slower, not faster.

Congratulations on getting a patch! It's immensely special to get a flown item directly from an astronaut like that, so I'm glad you were able to get one! I know it can be a bit worrying to spend such a large amount of money on an order and then not have it arrive after months. But I've made several purchases over the years, and they always have arrived eventually. Walt's a really, really great person, and he does his best to make sure things are taken care of.

I ordered the unflown 45th anniversary/original patch and the book back in February and have not received any update either. Only confirmation of availability from Mrs.Cunningham, prior to the purchase. I'm waiting patiently.

I sent some things to be signed in, I believe, January. About a month later I got an email from Mrs. Cunningham about clarifying some details, and I received the items another month or so later. I was quite satisfied.

It’s been around 8 months and still haven’t heard a thing and no reply to the two emails I’ve sent. What is everyone’s advice?

Just received an email from Walt and looks like everything is getting looked at. It may be that I emailed him from my hotmail account and sometimes those can look like spam. Thanks for the help guys!

I purchased an autographed photo from his site last January but I haven’t heard anything back yet. I reached out again a few months ago but I don’t want to come across as being pushy by emailing again. Hopefully he’ll get around to it soon.

I ordered from his site in October and was hoping the photo might arrive by the end of the year, however based off your comment, I think I'll be waiting quite a while.

I also had to send a follow up as the option to personalize wasn't available when I put the order through for the photo, so if it does arrive, I'm not sure it will be as I hoped anyways.

Unfortunately, I’m still waiting. He emailed me and wanted me to send him the orders and the verification of payment by PayPal. I sent him all the info, but haven’t heard back yet.

I ordered back in February 2021 and have not heard back yet. However, I heard that at least a few collectors who had placed orders later, in fact, as late as in October already received their items. Not sure what's going on...

I hate to say it, but I wouldn't be surprised if these orders are never fulfilled. Mr. Cunningham's health has been in decline, and it's clearly becoming too difficult for him to manage everything on his own like this. I mentioned earlier that delays are expected, but a year is simply too long to wait. Over the past few years, I've seen things begin to take longer and longer. And we've finally reached the point where it's just stopped completely.

I was recently showing my space collection to my father. The next day, he mentioned that after seeing it, he went to Walt's site and bought a flown patch. I immediately felt bad, because I don't think he's ever going to receive it.

Walt is a really good person, and an entirely honest man. But in my opinion, he should probably just close the store section of his website, because it's just too much of a burden for him. I think his best option would be to sell everything in his store to a site like FarthestReaches, who can facilitate sales from then on.

But until something like that happens, I recommend not purchasing anything. It's a hassle for him, and lost money for you. Many buyers have passed the six-month window for Paypal refunds, which means that money is likely gone for good. It's really a sad situation for everyone. It's hard to see Walt struggle to keep up, and it's hard to see so many people lose a lot of money.

Isn't Mrs. Cunningham helping Walt with the store? She replied and answered my initial inquiry. I confirmed my order and the last reply was: "I will check it in the morning and get back to you."

She is also listed as a contact person on PayPal.

I believe Dot simply manages the payments. She handles the record-keeping and taxes. And she might drop the packages off at the Post Office from time to time.

But Walt is the one who processes the orders, because even pre-signed items don't get shipped quickly. Walt's flown patches are pre-signed and certified, yet they take months/years to ship. Back in July, I purchased one of the Paul Calle prints from his store, which was signed years ago. And it hasn't shipped. If Dot was able to help with the orders, those types of things could be shipped immediately, even if Walt wasn't able to assist.

So it seems that Walt is doing all of that himself. And he's just not able to manage it all anymore.

It sounds like they just need someone to help them out.

Walt is a great guy, and I would love to help but I live a long way from Houston.

I agree. If it were possible, I'd love to fly down to Houston, and spend a weekend getting everything caught up for them. Walt is so great, and I'd love to help out. It'd be fantastic to get to see him again. I don't know how feasible it'd be, but I wish I could help.

I decided to try my luck and I sent a follow up yesterday afternoon to Walt and Dot, politely asking if I could be provided an update. Walt did respond back fairly quickly, but seemed confused with the fact that I had already placed the order and was charged, so I sent him a screenshot of my transaction receipt. I am still waiting to hear back from him after that.

Dot responded to me later in the evening, with a response that seemed to understand the situation more clearly than Walt did. She told me that she was going to look into things and to "stand by". I am waiting on her follow up after that.

I have absolutely no doubt that Walt is a wonderful, genuine, and honest man. I feel that the online aspect of this, is beginning to confuse him greatly and orders are being missed as a result. He mentioned that I could send him the signing and postage $ to his address and he would get something out to me after that (which is where I am saying he seems confused with the online ordering aspect and what has or hasn't been ordered).

I am still thankful that Walt graciously allows us to communicate with him directly and to place orders through him. We will see what happens from this point, but in the end, like others have said, I think the entire online ordering situation has become too much for Walt and Dot to manage on their own.

It’s great that Walt and Dot have gotten back to you. I too would appreciate if they were made aware of my order from last January, though I completely understand if it puts anyone in an awkward position. I really don’t want to put any undue pressure on Mr Cunningham, I met him a few years ago and have a cherished photo of the occasion up in my living room. While I’d love another autograph it’s far less important to me than putting Walt under unnecessary pressure.

Altidude and gareth89, if I do receive another response from Dot or Walt, I don't mind mentioning your orders in question to them. If you want to send me an email, with the email addresses you used with your orders, I can note this in my response, if I receive one further to the last from either.

It’s nearing one year and still haven’t received my purchases. He sent me an email months ago saying he would look into the transactions and I sent him copies of the PayPal money transfers to his account, but did not hear anything back. I then found the address from when I purchased from him years ago and therefore sent him a letter with the printed out transactions. Still nothing.

I am now feeling that he has just plain stolen my money and other peoples money here too. This is incredibly disappointing. So, now what to do next. Can anyone offer any opinion on how to proceed?

Dot replied to me early in January and said she'd work with Walt to catch up on orders. I have no doubt that technology just got the better of Walt and he has a lot of emails and orders to work his way through.

Walt and Dot are both elderly, decent and outgoing people. I'm sure that the delays in orders are purely accidental, and that they are trying their best to catch up.

I think patience is the best way to advance here, by sending further emails we'll just be adding to the workload for Walt and Dot who I feel are already trying their best.

I have met and dealt with Mr. Cunningham numerous times over the years. He has been nothing but a gentleman. I am sorry to hear that your order has not been fulfilled, but to accuse him of stealing is unjustified. As mentioned previously, age is most likely the culprit.

Thanks for the input Dennis. So, it’s been about a year with multiple emails sent without reply and a letter without reply. How long would you suggest waiting for a reply or and order from him. How else should I try to contact him?

When you order something that is not fulfilled, how long do you give the people to send the item? Don’t want to jump to conclusions. Thanks in advance for the input.

This is a very difficult issue. Like others here, I can personally attest to the fact that Walt is an honest, decent person. I would immediately disagree with anyone who would think of him as a thief.

However, it's very troubling that in the past year, not a single person has received anything, and yet they continue to accept new orders. Several people have received emails from Dot, stating that they're going to try and catch up with orders. But the longer they wait, the more orders are made. There must be hundreds by now.

Personally, I don't mind waiting, as long as I can be confident that it'll arrive eventually. I understand how difficult it is for them, and I'm happy to be patient. But at this point, I doubt that any of us here are actually expecting to ever receive our orders. Some of us have paid thousands of dollars for flown items, and that money is likely lost. Paypal won't help you after six months. And it seems crass (and pointless) to ask the Cunninghams for a refund.

I absolutely don't think Walt is trying to steal from anyone. However, I do find it troubling that they haven't closed their site, at least temporarily. They have a huge backlog of orders already. And if they cannot fulfill a single one after a year, they shouldn't be accepting any new orders until they've caught up.

These delays are the result of age and health issues, but that's only going to get worse as time goes on. It's possible that neither of them know how to alter/close the site. But something needs to be done, because this situation is bad for everyone.

Contact them and request a refund of your money. It's a simple financial transaction. No matter who you are, if you don't deliver the product, you *must* refund the money.

Plus, the prospect of refunding thousands of dollars might focus the attention, so to speak.

I’ve asked them multiple times. I was happy when I received the first reply on Oct. 27 that he would look into it. He said that nothing came through, but it sure came through my bank account. I sent around 1700 and have not heard anything since. I even sent a list of the transactions through the mail with a letter. Still no reply. I’m not the only one and others have contacted me about their frustrations.

I understand that he has a lot of responsibilities and is someone I greatly admire. However, I don’t know what else to do. It’s fine to take some time to reply, however, they were quick as lightning to take my money.

I think the major problem here is that digital orders can easily be forgotten. There's a good chance that Walt has no idea about the orders, because it seems that Dot isn't doing anything about them. Dot gets an email that the PayPal payment was made, doesn't mention it to him, and nothing happens.

However, there may be a way around this. As far as I'm aware, I'm the only person who received an order in the past year. And it's because I sent in the item, and I included a stamped return envelope. That way, Walt could actually see the order for himself, and I think it's easier for him to take care of this when he simply has to put the item in the envelope and send it. So here's my recommendation:

  1. Go to your PayPal account, find the transaction, and print out the order details/invoice.

  2. Write a brief letter to Walt. In it, mention that you made an order, but that it's been a year with no updates. So you decided to make it easy for him, by sending a return envelope that had your address and postage already filled out, to save him a trip to the Post Office to ship it.

  3. Get a 9x12" envelope and a 10x13" envelope. On the smaller envelope, fill it out to your name and address. On the larger envelope, address it from you to Walt. Add about $5 worth of stamps to both envelopes.

  4. Place the smaller envelope, the letter, and the Paypal invoice all together in the larger envelope, and mail it to him:

    Walter Cunningham

    Houston, TX 77056

Hold on, wait up. Surely somebody from this site has direct contact with the Cunninghams can contact him personally and let him know there is an issue. If there has been no contact for a year then clearly there is an issue that has occurred, keepinb mind the guy is nearly 90.

Is there a friend on this site who can step in and help?

Thanks for the help.

That was the address I sent the letter to. I actually hand wrote the letter as well so he wouldn't think it was junk mail and put in the entire transaction proofs from PayPal as well.

Nothing.

It may be that Dot doesn't mention it to him. However, if there are that many transactions, then will he be scratching his head when his accountant asks him where this extra 200k of income came from?

I'm still hoping this works out, but really frustrated for myself and the others this is happening to.
