I learned this morning that NASA, exhibiting at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, was to have two sessions with astronauts today, and I am told others are expected tomorrow and sporadically throughout the week.

Today, Kevin Ford, Nicole Stott, Steve Frick (STS-110) and Michael Good were there. This was my first time going to Reliant Park since moving to Houston and a few wrong turns, poor choices in parking locations and then a delay finding the NASA booth led me to missing Ford and Stott but I have posted photos of Frick and Good to Sightings.

There isn't a published schedule (as far as I can tell) on the HLSR website, so no Sightings calendar entry but if I learn more details I'll post it here.

From what I saw, it was limited to one signature per person. Today, I had Frick and Good sign my Who's Who, which was my one signature from each. If I go back it would be because I was missing that person from the book, so I am sorry that I couldn't help this time.

Today's astronaut was Pam Melroy but we got there - literally - as she was leaving. As my friend and I were entering the gates to the Reliant Center we saw her coming out. She kindly agreed to sign my Who's Who but then had to leave, so no photographs (and her blank lithographs were back at the NASA exhibit). Later, at the booth, we learned she was speaking to a group at the rodeo but we were unsuccessful finding out where.

The NASA volunteers staffing the booth did not have a schedule for the remainder of the week, though Houston collector wrote me this evening to say he had one but didn't provide it. I plan to contact NASA PAO tomorrow so I can post whatever further appearances there are scheduled.

This Houston collector (who asked to remain nameless) said that the astronauts did not have a per-person autograph policy, so my observation may have been mistaken.

HouseDad..( and Robert, if I'm out of line, let me know..) we can't have Robert showing up to these events with a stack of lithos to get signed for us all. He is respected for the representative of CollectSpace that he is, and probably doesn't want to jeopardize that by "autograph hounding".. now the rest of us on the other hand would probably feel more secure in asking any guest for an extra for a buddy, but I dont feel it's right to put Robert on the spot..

Thank you, John. Usually I am happy to help fellow collectors with an autograph request, as I have done at past UACC shows, through Rocket Town appearances and events where I know asking for additional autographs will not be a problem. Many have helped me, so I feel its only appropriate to respond in kind.

Regarding the Rodeo, NASA has issued a schedule for the final weekend with eight astronauts to appear over two days. I have added the listing to Sightings or you can read the release (Note: the times on the release are for media interviews; signing sessions begin two hours prior).

Putting Robert on the spot was not my intention, and if that is what was perceived by my previous post, then I apologize.

Regarding the previous post by John K., while I understand and can appreciate what you are saying, I would ask that you please email me off boards if you feel there is a problem.

Thanks!!!

I didn't read it that way Brian, and I hope you understand that my rejection was not to imply that I didn't want to assist.

My intention was not to start an argument.. but as per the above, possibly if you had asked your question to Robert off post, it would have been more appropriate. Just imagine the requests he would get if he replied in the affirmative to get you some signed items.. we would need a whole new category for requests to Robert.. well, anyways, he has made his point very clear on what he is and is unable to do. If I offended anyone in our " Fraternity " ..it was not my intention to do so.

Hey John,

The only reason I asked to be contacted off boards regarding any problems was because your initial post kinda hit me the wrong way.

I know you didn't mean to start any arguements or offend anyone and I certainly didn't intend to cause any friction as well.

We definitely don't need to be hammering Robert with requests, or, like you said, we'd need another board. I didn't think that asking about the possibilities was inappropriate when I initially posted, but after reading your post, you are correct, it would have been more appropriate to contact him off boards.

Pictures from today's rodeo appearances are now on the site under Recent Sightings.

(As a personal aside, today Ron Garan became the 200th astronaut, cosmonaut or taikonaut to sign in-person my copy of Who's Who in Space.)
