My husband and I just found out that Gene Cernan is being featured on a week long Seattle to Alaska cruise in late August, the proceeds of which will benefit The Museum of Flight. Mr. Cernan will be available all week for small group conversations, etc. Just wanted to know what others think about this unique opportunity to meet a space legend face to face. Has anyone out there been on a cruise like this before? |

Gee, a week on a cruise ship to Alaska with Gene Cernan, who's one of the most respected & skilled astronauts in his field???? He is 1 of 3 men to fly around the moon 2 times, he has experienced more time on or around the moon than anyone else in history, he's one of the nicest guys you could meet and you get to have small private "chats" with him???? Let me think about this before I have to commit and I'll have to get back to you with an answer.OK......where do I sign up??? What a chance of a lifetime to have the opportunity to spend time with Gene Cernan on a cruise ship and speak with him about his incredible experiences !!!!! If I were you, I'd pass, he's probably really boring and doesn't enjoy talking to or being around people. If you don't go, would you be willing to sell your tickets for this cruise??? Which cruise is he going to be on? Let me ask you this, would you enjoy speaking to Columbus, Magellan, Erickson or other great explorers in history? I don't know of a single person on this board who wouldn't give their eye teeth to spend a week on a cruise ship with Gene Cernan and if you go, do a little homework about what he's done. It will make the little "chats" much more meaningful and enjoyable. Yes, please elaborate on the details. I had actually been looking at an Alaskan cruise for this Summer, but was thwarted by the cost of taking an infant with me... 50% of a big person ticket for a 1 year old! Plus, try and find a stateroom with 3 beds! But, with Gene going along, it may be worth the extra bucks! ------------------ Kind Regards Douglas Henry Enjoy yourself and have fun.... it is only a hobby! http://home.earthlink.net/~aztecdoug/ |

Oh make no mistake, I am a huge Cernan fan. I think that Last Man on the Moon is the best astronaut book I've read yet, and Cernan's very likeable personality comes off loud and clear. I would much rather go on a week long trip with Cernan- on a cruise ship no less- than travel in space for a week with someone like Frank Borman! (poor Jim Lovell !) Anyway, here is some more info for those that are interested. The cruise is Aug.20-27th. Fares begin at $936 per person, double occupancy. The ship is Holland America's MS Oosterdam. Toll free number- 800-659-3360, or www.admiralcruises.com As I said before, all bookings benefit The Museum of Flight in Seattle, which could definitely use a boost to their Apollo displays. Bon Voyage and God Speed! |

Alright, lighten up on my poor wife. How many of your wives take an active, genuine interest in your hobby, and make it their own? (She can even name most of the backup crews!) How many of them just bitch about the costs of collecting, while my wife decides to name her son after an Apollo astronaut? She's done plenty of "Homework" I can assure you, and only wanted to know what, if any, experiences others may have had on a celebrity cruise. We're actually not going on the cruise, but thought you all might like the info. I bet it'll be great. Now go ask your wife why Cernan was bumped to prime on Gemini 9a... Welcome to the board, HappyProudThrilled!

Ok....relax Capcom1, I was just joking with her and yes, my wife also enjoys my space addiction, just not as much as yours does. It was pretty funny that someone would post a "what if" question about spending time with Gene Cernan on a cruise. Since your wife's question wasn't rhetorical, it was kind of a slam dunk as to what most of us would say or think. Now I'm between a rock & a hard place because I've got to talk my wife into an Alaska cruise right after I get home from the Sims/Hankow show in August. It looks like August is going to be a very expensive month. Ray |

It's actually a very good question - some of these companies heavily advertise their guest speakers, but then they only give one talk and you otherwise never see them on the cruise - I have heard some horror stories. This company sounds like it is promising more time with Cernan, but it would still be worth checking out what that means, in case of disappointment. Otherwise it could be a very expensive one-off meeting! FF |

my info came from Aloft, the magazine for the Museum of Flight, the Mar/Apr edition. If the Admiral Cruises website isn't giving the information, I would try to contact the museum, since they are sponsoring it (www.museumofflight.org) OR, the magazine included the contact info for a local cruise center,, admiral of the fleet, 425.644.7447 Give them a ring and see what's up... BTW, the Aloft magazine from the Seattle Museum of Flight is kind of flaky... they don't even show the supposed Apollo 13 reunion this summer that was "scheduled".....nor is there an online version AFAIK.

I had success with the phone number myself. The rates are pretty reasonable for an Alaskan cruise. Naturally the prices get higher for something with a window or balcony. Plus taxes etc... Oh and the side trips too! ------------------ Kind Regards Douglas Henry Enjoy yourself and have fun.... it is only a hobby! http://home.earthlink.net/~aztecdoug/ [This message has been edited by Aztecdoug (edited March 18, 2005).] |
