Although it is not yet listed as an upcoming event, I was pleasantly surprised to recieve today a copy of the catalogue for the April 9th Superior Space Memorabilia sale. There seems to be over 300 lots of space related material. With Superior, Swann and Aurora all in April, it will be a test of how deep the market is for space material. The PPK in the auction apparently is the one listed in the A-15 LM stowage list and was presumably flown to the surface. (Two others are listed in the CM stowage list.) However, the stowage list only shows one PPK in the LM and you would think there should be at least two. Moreover, I recall Irwin reporting that when they closed out the LM in a hurry, they left behind their PPKs. Lastly, the size of the PPK in the auction is very small, 3" x 1 1/2". So, what was in this one? It is too small for any of the stamped covers they carried or any unfolded flags or patches. Nevertheless the documentation is quite good even if all the pieces don't fit neatly together.Steve |

That size you mention is of the label. The bag is 6"x9". |

I've occasionally wondered about the Apollo 15 PPKs. As mentioned above, Irwin states in his book that he and Scott lost their lunar surface PPKs when they jettisoned them in the LM. The contents included not only their own items but "some of Al's things too" as Irwin wrote.None of the Apollo astronauts owes us any explanations, and if an astronaut says it's flown I'll take their word over anyone else's; nonetheless I would be curious to know where the Apollo 15 lunar surface items that have sold at auction came from. There are obvious and feasible explanations. Clearly Scott had the odd item in his pockets (  ), maybe Irwin did too. Was there such a thing as a lunar surface OFK? If so it seems feasible that NASA could have shared some of their own flags, patches, etc with the crew. I'd just be curious to know what actually happened. Of course I never considered that Irwin was mistaken, but if this IS the lunar surface PPK bag up for auction then you have to wonder. As Steve said, the pieces don't fit together. Cheers,

Don't want to add oil to the fire....but wasn't there a lunar surface patch in a Superior auction that came from Mary Irwin which realized a couple thousand and a similar one in Christies that sold at 385,000....hmmLot 982 Spring 1999 sale
Lot 171 1999 Christies auction Both are described to come from the PLSS and they are not the same one...from what I know only one NASA patch was attached to the PLSS....so if my logic is correct - someone please correct me here - one of the patches sold is not authentic. Surprisingly both patches come with a certification from Mary Irwin.
Another third NASA patch was sold one year later in Christies for 450.000 I believe. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Doesn't add a lot of credibility to items coming from Mary Irwin.....but that's my opinion. Again if someone has other information, please enlighten me. Florian |

There was certainly a lunar surface OFK, with flag of all states and UN nations etc.Getting back to the PPKs, where were the 300 surface-flown Sieger covers then? Surely not in the OFK, which means at least one surface PPK must have made it back. |
