Catalogs for the April 17th sale from Goldberg Auctions will be in the mail this week and the sale will be up on our website by Friday. This will be an unusually diversified sale with strength in items from the Ed White collection (GT-4 and Apollo 1)and the Dick Gordon collection (GT-11 and Apollo 12) collections. In addition, there are extensive Apollo 11 Crew-signed pieces and other memorabilia from a variety of consignors. Of particular importance are the flown "Procedures" checklist from GT-11 in which Dick Gordon notes seeing a "UFO" in space and Ed White's West Point ring which he wore on his spacewalk during GT-4 and which was recovered from his body after the Pad Fire during Apollo 1 training. The ring shows the effects of the intense heat on part of its jeweled center. ALSO included is Ed White's U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame medallion and ribbon presented to his family at his induction as part of the second group of inductees. This sale has much of interest to the specialist as well as the general collector. If you don't already receive copies of the catalog, feel free to contact me for a complimentary copy. Bidders have their choice of bidding by mail, by phone, in person in our Beverly Hills Gallery, via our web site, or via ICollector live in real time. I look forward to your participation and answering your questions. |

I assume you mean Ed White's West Point ring. |

Thanks for catching the mistake. Just checking to see who was awake at the switch. Actually getting old isn't the fun it was cracked up to be. I have made the correction. I'm sure you will see more errors, hopefully just typos, in the printed catalog. Let me know about those also so I can change them on the web site catalog. |

Can't imagine it's one of White's heirs put this ring up for sale unless they were destitute. If its somebody else outside the family consigning, I hope the White clan have an opportunity to recover this item. Gruesome stuff! |

Given that members of White's family have previously offered for sale the Omega watch he was wearing during the fire as well as other personal items (including the memorial book signed at his funeral), it would not be unthinkable that this ring comes directly from the family as well. |

I strongly suspect that the ring is being consigned by Ed White's son. While it's now his ring to do with as he pleases, I can't help but wish the ring had been buried with Ed White back in 1967. |

I agree Mark.Whilst someone will no doubt snap this up for its "uniqueness" value I can't imagine why you'd want a memento removed from Ed's body after such a tragic and traumatic accident. It may have flown but it was on the poor man's finger when he DIED. "Rights" of disposal should also come with responsibilities of good moral taste. |

This is one instance where the auction house could have exercised better discretion when selecting material - they too are profiting from the sale of this ring. |

He'd just find some place else to sell it. Ed White III, is a rather notorious figure. Just the opposite from his hero father. His signature looks exactly like his Dad's too. |

If I bought it, I'd take it to where Ed White is buried at West Point, get permission to dig a shallow hole and there it would stay. |

OK Kim, you've peaked my interest. What do you mean "Ed White III, is a rather notorious figure"? Just curious. |

I don't want to be known as a troll and loose cannon (too late!). Can someone else explain some of his transgressions? |

I do know that Ed White III was the person behind the SpaceShots trading cards that were released in the early 1990s. I remember meeting him at a card show in either San Antonio or Houston back then and buying one of the sets from him.My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I seem to also remember seeing reports that his efforts regarding the cards left some bad feelings with more than one of the astronauts involved. |

I don't know if it would have made a difference to have mentioned it in the cS blurb, but all proceeds received by the consignor from the sale of this lot will go to the Ed White Scholarship Fund at the University of Michigan. It should also be noted that the White family has made memorabilia donations to West Point, the Air Force Museum and the Astronaut Hall of Fame, among others, in past years. I hope this clears up some of the collector concerns about this historic piece of memorabilia. Michael |

Any idea when this will be available online? Much longer and the dollar will be at 1:1 with the pound. Need to buy stuff! |

The following lots all seem to be the secretarial type of Apollo 11 signatures that came out of the astronaut office: And not sure who signed this one? |

I am hoping someone on this site can help me. I'm a book collector and item #429 caught my eye "The First Men in the Moon" 1901 1st ed. signed by the crew of Apollo XI the first men to land on the moon. How do I know the autographs are real, and what value they would give to such a rare book? Any and all opinions I would appreciate. Thank you for your time. |

Nosred, welcome to cS!I really don't know what value to place on Lot #429, but I can tell you all three Apollo 11 signatures look absolutely real to me. Nothing about them sticks out as a problem. Good luck on it if you decide to pursue it! I've always been a fan of H.G. Wells myself. |

I'd say the estimate of $10,000 is close to the price this will go for. Signed copies of First on the Moon go for $6-8k, but the uniqueness of this first edition will add value. It's a great item. One of the favourites in my collection is a first edition of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon signed by the Apollo 8 crew. Sometimes the choice of medium can make a real difference. |

Acknowledging the risk here, I would like to discuss THE RING a bit. Could astronauts wear jewelry while suited-up? Would your glove fit while wearing a class ring? I noted from the catalog pictures the rough condition of the black stone in the ring. The catalog description notes "It contains a black stone that clearly shows heat discoloration from the fire across part of the surface (the astronaut's bodies were not burned during the fire)." According to the medical panel who examined the crew -- Panel 11 in the investigation -- the men were burned, but that was not the cause of death. My brief study of US Military Academy rings finds many with the rather inexpensive stone onyx. It does look great with the gold ring. Onxy is about as hard as quartz which you know is very hard. So, perhaps this ring does not have an onyx stone. If, however, the stone was damaged by the fire, wouldn't the gold have also been affected? The gold features only look smoothed from normal wear. Discuss. |

LOT 529 is a group of five Russian items. I am interested in the patches in this lot. There is already a bid. I don't want to bid this up for someone if you want one of the other items in the lot. Contact me offline and we will discuss. |

I am not an expert... but items 431, 432, 433, 434, and 435 sure don't look right to me either and I am surprised nobody else is saying anything. Any other comments? |

Just a reminder of the sale tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. My apologies to all regarding the time conflict with the Regency-Superior sale. I don't know why, since we are across the street from each other in Beverly Hills, but somehow these conflicts crop up from time to time. For those of you who can't sit in two chairs at the same time and yet still want to bid, I will be glad to represent you at the sale as an agent (no charge - guaranteed, no games). If anyone is so inclined, I will have to have an email with phone, contact info, lots and bids NO LATER than 9 AM tomorrow (Saturday) morning as I will be leaving by 9:30 for the sale. Good luck to all. |

Could anyone please explain me how the payment process works? It was my first time bidding on a Goldberg auction and I won two items using Live Auctioneers. Now I don't know if I need to contact the auction house or wait for an invoice via email or mail. |
