If anyone is interested I propose to start a new European Grab Bag (number V I believe?) on its way.I believe I have enough material to start a small box. Nothing fancy, but some interesting bits and pieces. As ever we need to keep the weight down to avoid enormous shipping fees. |

Yes, I'd be more than happy to co-operate on this endeavour too, Chris. Being a newbie though, I'm not too sure of the protocol involved so a quick heads-up on the procedure would be invaluable. Thanks in advance. |

Great idea! - I sure like to grab some patches and I have to give some nice patches from my collection too (nothing real expensive, but maybe some that are not so easy to be found). The only problem is: maybe I am moving at the moment and my address will change, but I am not too sure about that... |

It's basically a box of space-related bits and pieces. You rummage through it and hopefully find some bits and pieces of interest for your collection then put in some items you hope might be of interest to other people down the line. It's not going to be full of Armstrong signed lithos but there are still enough interesting but inexpensive collectibles out there to make it worthwhile and fun. Because a heavy box will cost a fortune to send at each step I'll try to keep the initial weight down to around 2kg. I won't have the box ready for a few days at least so let's give the list a little time to grow before we kick things off. |

I'm going to leave it a little while longer before starting it off as I want to get a better idea how many people are going to be in the loop. The reason is I'd like to put in a few items in multiples and I want to be sure I put in enough for everyone but not too many so as not to waste space and weight in the package. |

Look like we're up to 13 participants now by my reckoning.I've started working on filling the box now. I'm probably going to be aiming for the under 3kg range now as 2kg was just too restrictive. The postage between countries is going to be fairly hefty but within the UK I believe it should be possible to post for £8.80. |

I'm going to try to get the EGB-V ready for launch this week."Apollo8" if you send me your address I'll send it to you first since you have a time deadline. After that I suggest maybe the box could do a quick tour of the European mainland - Germany, Holland, Czech Rep., Denmark - before heading for the usual grand tour of the UK. |

Please consider and decide in the direction of sending the correct package. I mean, carefully planned his journey. For all sure it will not load, but certainly an advantage. The last package, it was a very smart thing to do. Very good plan. Thank you for your attention. |

The EGB-V should be launching today. I'll publish a brief overview of the mission stowage list a little later. Can I ask that all participants please email me the address they want to use for the delivery? I will use this information to work out the optimum route and will forward the appropriate details to each link in the chain so there's no need to establish comm links each time. In terms of guidelines for the users of the box: - I strongly suggest that you try to keep the weight under 3kg, although once it reaches the UK you could consider upgrading to 4kg as the internal postage won't be so expensive.
- Take out whatever interests you (don't be shy) and try to replace it with material you're sure will appeal to someone else down the line.
- Don't take out items to resell.
To my mind the worst thing to put in the box is something heavy with little or no appeal to others.Books or obscure bulky documents are generally a bad idea. A paperback might weigh 300g which means it's going to be costing around 2.50 Euros every time it's mailed between countries. If it stays in the box for four trips then it would have been cheaper for the next person to buy a new copy. If it stays in the whole way round it will have cost everyone nearly 40 Euros! |

Chris, any idea as to the overall size of the package? Will it be large enough to accommodate A4 or are we looking at something smaller. As a patch collector, I'll be mainly adding patches surplus to requirement but I have some decal sheets that may be of interest which I'd be happy to move on. |

Mike, previous boxes have all been large enough to accommodate A4 size items, so I would think Chris would do the same in this case. |

The box is big enough for A4 items. There's no guarantee it'll be the same box by the time it reaches you though as these things tend to take a bit of a beating as they go. |

Official press release from the EGB-V launch site [11:44 CET / 09:44 UDT]:If weather conditions remain favourable in the Paris area (for my wife to get to the Post Office) the EGB-V should be launching today. We are currently experiencing light cross winds and the weather radar shows only a 10% probability of precipitation so the probability of a successful launch remains high. Some technical information on the launch vehicle: The unmanned EGB-V cargo vehicle consists of a reinforced cellulose-based corrugated fiberboard outer hull and a payload bay accessed by means of four hinged panels in the outer hull. Total weight at launch of the EGB-V will be 2,987g, which is within the specified parameters for the vehicle. Since the vehicle itself does not include any propulsion system it will be delivered by a combination of small post office vans, lorries, trains, planes, and kicks from disgruntled postal workers. Further updates will be provided when possible. |

Below I give a basic manifest for the EGB-V at launch. Obviously this is going to change as the box progresses, although I have put in enough multiples of a few items to ensure that there should be one for every participant. Please bear in mind that all the material to start the box has to come from my own collection so don't expect miracles in terms of the content. Since I have so far failed to win the Euromillions jackpot I'm afraid I don't have 3 kilos of Armstrong signed lithos, vintage Gemini crew patches, flown kapton foil, and lunar dust to shovel into the box. EGB-V Concise Stowage List: - Assorted patches including a few Lion Brothers Apollo patches, some assorted Shuttle patches in multiples (5 or 6 of each), and some odds and ends.
- A large number of decals including numerous vintage Apollo mission decals, mostly in quantity (enough for everyone to take one example).
- A number of pins, including STS-26 and STS-115 pins in bulk and some others in smaller quantities.
- A folder containing assorted NASA lithos (Apollo era) plus a few vintage Apollo-era b/w photos, and some vintage Gemini b/w press release photos.
- A small stack of covers with a couple of vintage Apollo-era examples and a few more modern covers from Shuttle press kits.
- Miscellaneous paper ephermera including a few vintage booklets, Shuttle facility guest passes, and a few press passes from early Shuttle launches.
- Over 250 foreign space-themed stamps plus a few US-issue.
- Three fragment handouts produced in the 1980s or 1990s by Jacques Tiziou. These include small pieces of thermal insulation from an Ariane V-9 1984 launch and insulation panel fragments from a French Diamant A launch from 1966. There should be enough of these for everyone to take one.
By the way, I don't expect everyone who receives the box to say what they took out or put in. |

I am looking forward to the Apollo era NASA lithos! I hope, it's okay to give patches for lithos? I have started collecting lithos a few months ago, and don't have any lithos to give away. But as a patch collector for a few years I can throw in patches and I can give away a Skylab space flight medal with flown metal, too (I had to buy it with a rare patch, I was looking for, but I don´t collect medals or coins)! |

Count me in as well (Belgium). Can send stuff from Germany, the Netherlands and sometimes to France, so I am a good stepping stone for cross-border shipping of the EGB to one of these countries. Jürgen

Send me your email address and I'll provide a higher res version. I've also amended the flight path to reflect the fact it will land in Scotland before England.Message to Steve Proctor: I work in Leeds so may as well save on postage costs and arrange a swop, assuming the mailing order stays as is and it's OK with you. Will contact you nearer the date. |

As the list has rapidly expanded to 21 names now I should note that everyone on the list will need to be pretty patient. Previous missions, with less participants, have taken 6 to 8 months.Note that the order is not set in stone. As the mainland European list continues to grow it may be that we can split things so that the box travels through the UK for a while before coming back to the mainland to continue the tour. |
