NASA Deputy Administrator Shana Dale revealed the NASA 50th anniversary logo during WIRED Magazine's NextFest at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Crabtree + Company release

NASA selects Crabtree + Company Design
Special logo will be used to celebrate 50 years of space exploration

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today named marketing communications firm Crabtree + Company, Inc. (C+C) as the winner of a competition to create a special logo celebrating the agency's 50th Anniversary. C+C's design, which incorporates a recent Hubble Space Telescope image, highlights a galaxy nearly 12 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major. "We were honored to be asked to submit our designs," said C+C President and founder Lucinda Crabtree, "and deeply gratified that one of our entries was chosen to represent this milestone achievement." On October 1st NASA will kick off year-long celebration of its anniversary, culminating on October 1, 2008.

Many of the 120 logos submitted featured NASA's historic achievements, depicting various spacecraft or important events. C+C chose instead to evoke the sense of wonder and excited anticipation that has always characterized our nation's many explorations. "We wanted to create an image that depicted NASA's future — our future — as one filled with promise," said Crabtree, "...and wonder. These first 50 years clearly deserve to be celebrated, but they are only the beginning."

C+C will celebrate its own anniversary (its 25th) next April 1st. The firm is a premier marketing communications and firm located in metropolitan Washington, DC. C+C crafts strategic communications solutions for businesses and non-profit organizations, as well as government agencies.

It will make a great looking patch. Do you know if there are plans to offer them?

Per NASA, it hasn't yet been decided how the logo will be used or in what ways it will be produced.

As means of an update, NASA has now produced t-shirts and lapel pins with their 50th anniversary logo. The earlier was offered to employees only; the latter is for sale at NASA souvenir shops at KSC and JSC (as well as from The Space Store.)

With regards to the NASA t-shirts though, at least one has made it into space with the STS-123 crew aboard Endeavour:

Shopping at different NASA center gift shops, I have so far found two different versions of NASA's 50th anniversary patch:

At the recent Houston Astros' NASA Night however, a third version was worn by the players:

I suppose it's possible that the Astros had their own patches made, but has anyone seen their version available elsewhere?

It's a result of either different suppliers for different NASA Exchange stores and/or shoddy quality control.

If you look at the three patches Robert has posted they are all different. The number of stars, the way the galaxy is illustrated and the sun burst.

They either don't realize or don't care. They should visit cS and read the discussions about patches on this site.

With regards to the two I have, you can find the one on the left for sale through The Space Store and the one on the right through the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's The Space Shop, or both through Galactic Voyager (who says that both were produced by AB Emblem, but that the one on the right is a "high definition" version and thus more expensive).

That still leaves the question of the Astros' version, which is decidedly different from the other two.
