Does anyone out there have a five inch diameter Skylab I patch? I do and was wondering if there are others. It is a great looking old patch, but unsure of why it was made in that size. No crew initials on it, unfortunately.

Yeah, I have one as well. I haven't seen others like it for other missions (outside of the Apollo 17 and ASTP 'initial' patches), but it's a gorgeous patch. The only other thing I know about it for sure, is that it was manufactured by Hilborn-Hamburger, Inc. of New York, as it came on a card stating such. The company was a military insigia maker, so it's possible these were done by the Navy for the recovery forces. As such, it may also be that Hilborn-Hamburger made some of the 5" recovery ship patches.

Did they do the 5" patch for the recovery of ASTP on the USS New Orleans? I am looking for a photo of the patch or to get the patch.

thanks

I haven't seen one, and don't have one, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there. I'm regularly surprised by the existance of such things. Does anyone else know if the Navy made an ASTP recovery ship patch?

One other note - I've done some research and have unconvered a photo of the Apollo 14 U.S.S. Ticonderoga recovery patch on a Hilborn-Hamburger card. So I think it's safe to say that the company probably made most if not all the recovery patches from that period.

I think you are right about the manufacturer you mention, Bill. My 5-inch Skylab I came with a USS Ticonderoga ship patch and an Apollo 17 Recovery patch.

I also have the Skylab 2 and 3 recovery patches and they are big, like ship patches. But, their quality seems a bit better than the Apollo 16 and large Skylab 1 patches. They are a little newer, I guess.

Donnis has images of the recovery patches on his site.

Although these patches have been around for more than 30 years, it is nice to find a surprise sometimes... and there is always someone on cS who has seen it before. Thanks for the discussion.

I'll have to keep looking out for the ASTP recovery 5" patch.

Just to let you know I have a set of 5" recovery ships patches from Mercury MR-2 (Ham) to the shuttle, only the one for ASTP is missing.

If you would like to see them, e-mall me and I'll get back to you with a photo of them all.

And yes, I think a number of them are by Hilborn-Hamburger.
