Thank you Captain Hauck for serving our country as a Navel Aviator, Vietnam Veteran, and NASA Astronaut!I had the pleasure to meet Captain Hauck twice and each time I reminded him of June 27, 1982 when he was the guest Astronaut for NBC News Shuttle Coverage for STS-4 and he was describing the "barbeque rolls" that Shuttle Columbia would be performing during the flight and he was demonstrating with a model at the news desk when the cargo bay contents fell out onto the desk. I still have it on video. He and I would always get a laugh about that incident. |

A fantastic career and a life well-lived. I saw his last launch aboard STS-26 in person, and can still remember when the call-out "Go at throttle-up.." came from Houston and we at the NASA causeway viewing site waited tensely for those seconds after Hauck's reply to pass. The next dramatic event was SRB separation, and of course all in attendance let out a cheer. By the way, Hauck was not the first of the 1978 TFNGs to fly in space: He had fellow classmates Ride, Thagard, and Fabian along with him on STS-7, but it could be said that he was the first of the class to *enter* space, as he was in the right-hand pilot seat on Challenger. Appropriate, as Hauck was appointed class leader on their arrival for training in Houston in 1978. |

Actually, that title goes to John Fabian, based on a bit of research that was conducted to figure out who on STS-127 was the 500th person to fly into space. Given the flight profile of the shuttle, which rolls twice on its way to orbit, others on the STS-127 crew believed the 500th would be Cassidy, who is seated behind Hurley on the flight deck. The distinction that sets Hauck apart from his other TFNG crewmates was very briefly discussed in his NASA oral history: ROSS-NAZZAL: You were actually the first pilot from your class to be selected [for a spaceflight].HAUCK: Right. |
