I'm pleased to announce that the manuscript and photographs for this book are now being sent over to my favourite copy editor, and if the usual schedule holds it will be published sometime before mid-2015.This is the third book in the Mercury flight series following the publication by Springer Books of those detailing the flights of Freedom 7 and Liberty Bell 7 with Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom respectively. I am already well into preparing the next book, on the flight of Scott Carpenter aboard Aurora 7. |

This is great news Colin! I have always wanted to know what went down after Liberty Bell 7 that led to Glenn's Atlas flight. We know about Titov... but with the problems of MA-5, this was a major decision on NASA's end. And the story of the MA-6 booster issues — like the fuel leak. I can't wait to read it! |

With many thanks to my old mate 'Hermit' who is not only one of the best writers around on spaceflight history, but a fabulous and incisive copyeditor.Barring any productions problems, I would guess at about a March/April release. So now it's on to "Aurora 7" - the next in the Mercury flight series. |

Based on my experience in the past with Springer books, this one will be available much sooner than that - I'd suggest about May. |

amazon.co.uk gives 24 June 2015 as release date. So our estimate seems about right. |

So does Amazon.com: Friendship 7: The Epic Orbital Flight of John H. Glenn, Jr. by Colin Burgess In this spellbinding account of an historic but troubled orbital mission, noted space historian Colin Burgess takes us back to an electrifying time in American history, when intrepid pioneers were launched atop notoriously unreliable rockets at the very dawn of human space exploration.A nation proudly and collectively came to a standstill on the day this mission flew; a day that will be forever enshrined in American spaceflight history. On the morning of February 20, 1962, following months of frustrating delays, a Marine Corps war hero and test pilot named John Glenn finally blazed a path into orbit aboard a compact capsule named Friendship 7. The book's tension-filled narrative faithfully unfolds through contemporary reports and the personal recollections of astronaut John Glenn, along with those closest to the Friendship 7 story, revealing previously unknown facts behind one of America's most ambitious and memorable pioneering space missions. - Paperback: 250 pages
- Publisher: Springer; 2015 edition (June 24, 2015)
- ISBN-10: 3319156535
- ISBN-13: 978-3319156538

With the editing and page-proof checking process now completed, this book has just gone to the production company to be finalised and printed. Right on track time-wise, it should now be available through Amazon.com in a month or two. |

Does the book have an 'epilogue' or mention of Glenn's flight aboard Discovery/STS-95? |

Yes, the book actually discusses JG's post-flight career and STS-95 flight and includes some tributes to him at the end. |

I received my copy today, a day early. My first impression is that Amazon has significantly improved their POD production since Liberty Bell 7. The photos are properly printed, including the color ones, and the text is uniformly dark and sharp.Of course, I haven't had a chance to start reading it yet, but a quick flick through it shows that it'll be up to the standards Colin has set with Freedom 7 and Liberty Bell 7. I just finished a bedtime read last night, so I'll start this tonight. I did find one nit to pick though. In the Author's Preface, on page xviii, the aircraft in the photo clearly isn't a B-29. Most likely it was a C-124 Globemaster. Undoubtedly it's not Colin's fault, but NASA mis-labeled the photo (not like that ever happens!). |
