Tim Kopra, arrived Friday, took about 4 months. Unfortunately my lazy postal delivery person left it in the rain.

Alvin Drew was great about signing today. (And he's a great speaker, too, the way he answered kids' questions.)

Mike Hopkins was great about signing today. He did a talk aimed at children about physical fitness - and frankly, I was a bit disappointed that he didn't do the Cha-Cha Slide they were playing prior to his talk.

What do I need to send when sending to NASA astronauts through Johnson Space Center? Do I need to provide an item to sign or do they enclose their own photo?

Also, I read on the address list on this site that an SASE is not required; is this correct? (Sorry for the newbie questions.) Thanks.

In my experiences they usually provide a stock photo. As you say, a ssae is not required.

Sorry for the ignorant question here. I'm still relatively new to this hobby.

Is there a list of current astronauts employed at NASA? Also, is there a list of astronauts from previous programs who still work at NASA?

Can both groups be reached through the JSC address? Thanks!

NASA's active astronaut list can be found here. Astronauts working in management can be found here.

Only astronauts who are stationed at Johnson Space Center (or based there) can be reached through the Astronaut Office.

And astronauts based at other NASA properties (such as Sellers) can be reached through those centers.

Mario Runco signed this weekend at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, among other (retired) astronauts.

How much did they charge for signatures at the Intrepid?

On Saturday on the Intrepid, Bobko, Edwards, Hart, Reisman, and Runco were so personable and friendly, engaging in conversation, and signed my item or their photo for free.

I drove a total of 500 miles that day and it was one of my favorite astronaut encounters. I really enjoyed meeting these gentlemen.

There was no cost other than admission to the Intrepid. The astronauts had scheduled autograph times, although most, if not all, were signing outside of those times, very personable and willing to sign more than one item, including their museum-provided cardstock litho if they had one.

The lithos were like the ones sold at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's Astronaut Encounter signings and in the gift shop, except these were heavier. They had the astronaut's bio on the back and were 8-1/2 x 11.

(I always bring extra items, in case I run into a kid who doesn't have something to get signed. In this case, a polite adult who had only a Discovery model I gave an Endeavour litho to get signed by Runco and Edwards. Runco was walking the floor and it didn't look like he had lithos.)

So when you do the lunch with an astronaut at KSC, you can buy photos ahead of time there?

Never did Lunch With An Astronaut; that said, there are some astronaut photos for sale in the gift shop.

My recollection, though, in the less than half a dozen trips to KSC and taking in the Astronaut Encounter is that the astronaut of the day will have their photo only at their signing. That is, for astronauts like Lousma, Reilly and Creighton, I've never seen their photos for sale in the gift shop, only at the table when they were doing their signings.

The astronaut does not sign at the lunch. However they normally appear in the Space Shop later in the afternoon for autographs, and in the shop they have pics for sale for 9.95 each.

Only if you also attach the litho you want signed to the fax, and if you ask them to fax it back to you, once signed...

That's disappointing. I was hoping to use that means as a quick turnaround for getting the autograph returned through snail mail. Thanks for the update!

Question, has anyone sent a photo to an astronaut via the Astronaut Office to have it signed? I would include a return envelope, postage paid and everything. Just wondered if anyone has had success doing this?

I have. Sometimes they used the SASE, sometimes they use the NASA envelope (and don't return my SASE.) I usually send a photo only if there's a specific photo I'd like signed and/or I had the photo printed out to begin with but missed their appearance.

Charlie Bolden, STS-60 and 61C lithos, sent out 29 January 2015, received 21 March.

I've met all the members of 61C over the span of 25 years, but only Hawley's on that 61C litho was in-person!

Active astronauts Drew Feustel, Michael Good, Greg C. Johnson (all part of the STS-125 crew), and Richard Linnehan (as part of the STS-109 crew) were all good at signing at Family Day at Udvar-Hazy Apr. 25. (Megan McArthur and Nancy Currie, who signed their respective crews, I noted under the Female Astronauts thread.)

I missed getting Good and Ray J, *sigh*.

This is a good one. Never give up on your requests, because I got a photo today from Terry Virts.

I hadn't gotten an envelope from NASA's CB office in a LONG time, so I was happy to see one in my mailbox. This request was sent out on 17 June 2013 - yes, almost two years ago! - and the return envelope had a mailer strip dated 13 May. Received today, 19 May 2015.

What's even more amazing is that Virts has been on-orbit since 23 November 2014!

I wonder if he had signed a bunch of these pre-flight, when he was in Houston, to be sent out (note no personlization).

Hart, congrats on the Virts autograph! I zoomed in on the photo and the STS-130 patch looks more like a decal than patch. Is this a "beta cloth" one?

It is not beta cloth. It may be a decal (used as a stand-in for the embroidered patch, which may not have been ready at the time the portrait was taken) or it could be a superimposed digital graphic.

Thanks! Now I guess I can expect a photo from Eric Boe, sent the same time.

This is the longest for me between send out and getting a return from JSC, although in at least one instance the litho had a date that was a few months before the date on the postage label.

Hart, let me know how it goes in receiving the Eric Boe autograph. I'd really be interested in the timeline so that I could submit a request to him.

It would be really cool to have his autograph for the "Boe namesake" (don't know if we are related or not).
