Ok, hypothetical situation. You've just discovered that Neil Armstrong has agreed to sign one item for you. What you pick? A standard WSS? A crew portrait? Some multi-signed piece you already have? A first edition of First on the Moon? What would you pick for your one-and-only shot? |

To be honest, I can't decide what I would get him to sign. All I know is that whatever I choose to have him sign, it would be something that you never (or almost never) see signed by him. I would want something unique and interesting. |

I would have him sign our 1/12 scale Lunar Module. The panel below the window on the Commander's side (in gold pen). |

First on the Moon, which would complete the Apollo 11 crew. |

A Bible, with the inscription "Yes, we really did land."(I came up with this after deciding, yeah, it would be neat to have Bean sign a photo with the inscription "Get the $@#! out of here" - after a Bart Siebel encounter where Bean actually said that (prefaced with "Get your stuff.") |

I would have one of my color polaroid shots of our black and white T.V. screen with the first steps signed. |

The Moonwalkers print would have to be first, even with 11 of the twelve it looks so pathetic without his signature on it. |

I think I would go for the nice head and shoulders shot of Armstrong in the LM post EVA with a smile that says 'Mission Accomplished'. |

Did you actually get Bean to sign that, or is that just an idea? Cos it's a mighty good and funny one!As for Armstrong, I'd go with a nice panorama I have which has been signed by several Apollo astronauts. I'm probably never going to have a piece signed by every one of them, but that would be a nice addition to an already awesome photo. |

No, just an idea. I just happened to be flipping through the web and saw that footage. Maybe if I win the lottery I'll either get Bean to sign it - or commission a painting from him with that title. |

I would ask Armstrong sign this drawing that my father did during the Apollo 11 Suiting Up. I have regretted the opportunities my dad and I had over the years to have him sign one of those sketches. |

Easy... It would be the AP11FR06 image in Kipp Teague's Apollo Archive website. It's a still from the 16mm camera of Armstrong working on the lunar surface with his face clearly visible. |

Chris, I would think Armstrong would be willing to sign one given your dad's huge contribution. Even with his current stance on signing, as long as the fact wasn't widely discussed. |

Nothing unusual... and simply because I collect them (inscribed to me) it would have to be a vintage WSS litho signed in black "To Derek Horne, With warmest regards from the first man on the moon. Neil Armstrong Apollo XI CDR, Gemini 8 CDR" . That would be incredible.... just wish it were possible to obtain that somehow |

Okay Chris, you have got us thinking, although I would like to have the LM signed we are sitting here reading these posts and looking at the Calle "The Great Moment." It would be over the top for us to have it signed by Armstrong just above his foot that is in the lunar soil. Signed in gold pen against the blackness of space and if we get to dream might as well go all the way and add "That’s one small step..." |

Perhaps some of you might find this interesting about that 4'x8' painting of "The Great Moment." Talk about regrets and the "one I'd most like to have back"...I remember after my father completed the painting, for years it was just resting on the floor and up against the wall at my father's studio in Weston, CT. The studio was an old red barn with huge ceilings, great light, etc. He shared the studio with another artist who owned the barn and surrounding buildings and would periodically draw little aliens and tape them on the shoulder of Armstrong, on the moon surface etc. At one point he got so sick of seeing that huge painting of my dad's that he just put it back in the storage part of the barn above the horse stalls. For some reason for a while it stayed back there in the dark collecting dust. I'll check with my dad this week on the details but some time later a collector (he either owned or had some ownership in the Houston Astros and I believe it hung in the corporate offices at the Astrodome) inquired about the painting and it was sold. He contacted my father asking if he thought Neil Armstrong would sign the actual painting. My father called Armstrong, and the collector and he spoke and Armstrong did sign the painting. In this detail of the painting you can see where lower left he signed the original painting, in paint! |

Well, I already have an Armstrong signed X-15 cover and an Apollo 11 crew-signed (insurance) cover. So, this is going to sound like a copout, but I have to go for him signing my Gemini 8 Scott-signed cover... |

An Armstrong signature would sure look good on on my print of Alan Bean's "That's What It Felt Like to Walk on the Moon" already signed by Aldrin, Bean, Mitchell, Scott, Young, Duke, Cernan, and Schmitt. The second choice would be a Spaceflori Apollo 11 moondust presentation. |

I did get him to sign my favorite item. I met him at the dedication of the Astronauts Memorial at KSC on May 9, 1991 and asked his permission first to mail it to him. I mailed him my copy of "The Great Moment" by Paul Calle. It is such a fabulously beautiful print! He signed it to me and wrote "With Best Wishes....Neil Armstrong Apollo 11". He also signed the sales booklet that advertised The Great Moment and the COA that came with each and every print. I consider myself very lucky and fortunate indeed! My other favorite Neil signed item is my Apollo 11 beta patch signed by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins along with the fellow that came up with LOR concept for the lunar trip... John Houbolt. One person signed on each of the four corners of the beta cloth patch. |

I've often wondered why Armstrong doesn't do a signing (signings) for charity or maybe do a signing of only the Moonwalker prints to complete them. He could charge a $1000 each and raise a million for whatever charity he wishes. Once he did a few signings the demand for his autograph would decrease dramatically from where it is now at least. His refusal to sign has actually created the market in the prices they get now. At least this way he could raise a lot of money for some good cause and give people a way to get stuff signed. I imagine he could care less about that, but it seems it would be a great way to go about it. |

I wrote to Neil Armstrong making that very suggestion in aid of the Tsuami several years ago; I mentioned that Mike Collins, reportedly anti autographs, had found a signing environment (behind closed doors at Novaspace) that he was comfortable with and that he might want to consider the same.Armstrong's PA responded that he was not interested in such an undertaking. |

Giving to charity is a personal activity that is done as one feels comfortable. Armstrong apparently has his own reasons for not signing to raise funds but that does not mean he does not support charities through other private means. |

I didnt mean to imply that he SHOULD be giving anything to charity. I wouldnt care if he burned the money or took the most lavish vacation in history and declared himself king of the world (although he'd probably have to do a few signings to reach that level). I just meant that if he doesn't feel comfortable making money off it there are ways around it that would make sense but if he doesn't want to he doesn't want to. What was the reason he stopped signing? Just sick of doing it? I would probably get a nice panoramic shot of him on the moon (I believe I saw one made up recently somewhere) signed. |
