Has anyone written to Thomas Marshburn at JSC? I mailed a letter to him yesterday mainly because he is a native of my town, Statesville, NC. I also included a Stateville All-American city lapel pin bestowed on my town in 1997. Hope he will like it and maybe fly it with him in June. Got to hope huh? Can anyone give me incite into his habits and the likelihood he will reply before flight.

Follow-up question: In a recent interview with Tom Marshburn from space, my local paper quoted him saying he can't wait to get to Statesville to see us. I am hoping someone can give me some ideas on how I can track him such as a website. I don't want to miss seeing my local hero and get his autograph and hopefully a photo with him. By the way, he hasn't sent a reply on my letter I sent in May with a Statesville lapel pin.

If his visit to Statesville is promoted in advance (not all astronaut visits are, with just post-event coverage) then his appearance(s) should appear on our own Sightings calendar.

That said, you'd do well to monitor your local newspaper (or its website) as well.

Just learned that Tom Marshburn will be visiting Statesville, NC on Oct. 4-5 for a number of activities and events. He's being called our "native space son". The chamber set aside $3.500 to fete him so it should be good. Already have a cover and crew photo waiting on him. Can't wait meet him.

I was honored to meet our favorite son astronaut Thomas Marshburn on Monday, Oct. 5.

Attended the Chamber of Commerce luncheon honoring him and listened in awe as Dr. Marshburn narrated a video of his mission. I sat with his college roommate who said he hadn't changed one bit. Still the same humble and easy to talk to person he knew back in school.

Also sat with Stan Clardy, a Statesville resident, who sang some of his space songs he wrote. One of the songs he sang was taken up to the ISS on STS-120 by Doug Wheelock and played there. Stan, if you're reading this I hope you don't mind me telling your achievement here. Very impressive to be in the company of these fine folks.

Also attended the public meeting in the evening and asked Marshburn about the pin I sent him in May. He remembered getting it, but his mail piled up too much and didn't actually get it till he came back. He did say he would liked to have taken it with him. Oh, what could have been if I had mailed it sooner!

Did see the Statesville pin he took up for the city as well as a flown patch and NC flag.

Got my photo with him after he autographed a couple photos for me as well as a launch cover and EVA patch. The photo is now framed and on my wall.

He is such a great example of what this country has to offer not to mention the pride I feel knowing he spent his childhood on the same road I lived for a while. Enough rambling on, but I feel like sharing all this. Thanks for listening.

I want to make a correction concerning my fellow cS'er Stan Clardy. His song "Big Blue Sky" was played on the ISS in 2004. Doug Wheelock took an advance copy of a newer space song CD with him on STS-120 and he hasn't heard back from him since. He said for all he knows he could have played the new CD on ISS. Just wanted to correct that for him.
