Is sending Chris Hadfield a letter to the Canadian Space Agency the best way to get his autograph? Any specific instructions? Thanks and please let me know!

Either CSA or NASA's Astronaut Office in Houston.

I have thoroughly enjoyed everything Commander Hadfield has done in orbit, and I was wondering when/how I might go about obtaining his signature.

I'm want to get a picture signed (and possibly have it personalized) for one of my teachers for a end of year gift.

Do I email a request, or send a letter? Thanks for the help — Justin

You have to watch his music video from the ISS, singing the "ground control to Major Tom" song (Space Oddity). The man has a pretty decent voice!

Justin - contacting the Canadian Space Agency has always worked for me as far as Chris Hadfield is concerned. They take their time, but sure are very reliable (gee - you even get a receipt for having sent in a request).

I sent them an email yesterday, and they replied today saying that the request has been sent to the appropriate places.

They also said that it could take 6 to 12 months, due the busy schedule of post flight stuff.

Sent a request to Hadfield the day he landed, got a printed letter also saying "due to logistics constraints, you should note that it may take up to 6 to 12 months before you receive a response."

What's the market value of a Diane Hughes preprinted note from the CSA?

The market value of Diana Hughes autograph depends on whether that intern follows through with her dream of flying into space one time. Then, in 25 years time, you can up your meager Gannett retirement benefits by selling it as "early vintage autograph."

Considering my pension has long been frozen, I will retrieve the memo from my recycling can, as it will be worth more than any money I get from my employer....

I just received the two autographs I requested! They arrived almost exactly 1 month after I requested them. I am very impressed by the CSA's operation.

Does Chris Hadfield still accept autograph requests through the CSA. If so, who do I e-mail?

I sent an email here:

astromail-courrier@asc-csa.gc.ca

and received a reply shortly saying thanks for your interest, and it could take 6 to 12 months to process my request.

Just a little over a month later, I received my autographed photo. Personalized to me, saying "Pursue your dreams".

Yep, Chris is great!

I just mailed an 8x10 to the Canadian Space Agency. This is the first time I had to fill out a customs form and pay for a "package" at a cost of $7.35. Is this normal now?

For what it is worth, I've mailed 5x7s and return envelopes to outside the US and never had to fill out a customs form. By the same token, requests which included those 5x7s (or 8x10s if they had them) never had customs forms attached.

I think it comes down to weight. I recently sent some calendars to Canada, when it was a single calendar, it was light enough not to be an issue. Did you enclose return mailing supplies, etc? If so might have made it too heavy.

I requested Mr. Hadfield's autograph via e-mail to the CSA on 12-31-13. I received a very polite, professional reply on 01-10-14 that my request had been received and that an autographed photo had been sent. I received the photo in the mail today. It's a very nice photo on thick card stock, and I couldn't be more pleased with the whole experience.

I wanted to try the email out and share that it's by far the best thing and the "thank you for your interest" card made it special. So on 27 January 2014 I sent an email to the email address in this topic and the following is a timeline for what it's worth.
  • Initial email sent and email reply that my request was received on 27 January 2014
  • Received a direct email from Astronauts, Life Science and Space Medicine on 30 January 2014
  • Received package on 07 February 2014 (approximately 12 days from request to receipt)
I know that if you want to receive autographs of NASA astronauts they have to be on the active roles, but this is not the case in that they forwarded my request to COL Hadfield and Julie Payette. Although, I didn't ask for the autographs of other retired CSA astronauts.

Just curious for those who have requested Chris' autograph by email - did you send a general request to the email address, or was your request specifically written to Chris, similar to the way that it would be done by regular mail directly to him?

I sent an email to the Canadian Space Agency (see above). I'm not sure if they can personalize the photo, but you'll get an autograph of him.

I got a personalized WSS photo from the CSA for my son. It just takes longer if you want it personalized.

After two letters, one to NASA and one to CSA, an email to the CSA and an email to Chris Hadfield, I have received a message from his agent saying that he no longer accepts any requests for autographs and any requests received will be turned down in order to be fair to all his fans.

Oh well. You win some you loose some.

I need some advice. Back when I got my autograph from Chris in 2013, I also had my girlfriend's son, who was 10 at the time, write an email asking for his autograph. I was trying to get him interested is spaceflight, and took him to KSC a few times. I had also showed him Chris's ISS music video. He wrote a nice little email and I was very proud of him.

He received the autograph and was thrilled. He took it to show his science teacher, who was from Canada. His teacher displayed it in the class. But for some reason, he never returned it. And the teacher is no longer at the school, an apparently took the photo with him.

I want to find a way to replace it, but with it being personalized, it would be impossible if Chris isn't signing anymore. Any ideas on what to do?

If Chris comes anywhere near you for a book signing, take a photo with you. I think he will usually sign photos if you don't make a big deal out of it. He signed a couple of photos for my son back in April at a book signing in Raleigh, NC. (The previous posts referred to the fact that he no longer signs through the mail. But he still does book signings, and I think he signs at other personal appearances, too.)

I had Chris sign a 4x6 photo already autographed by Roman Romanenko last December in Dublin at his book signing.
