Huge Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era buff here. Dad worked on the lunar module in Building 49 (the vibration and acoustics facility) and have fully researched his time there (even back to his time in the temporary Manned Spacecraft buildings off I-45).

I've just started trying to find popular hangout spots for the astronauts and those that worked at NASA around Clear Lake/Houston. Mercury era is likely sparse, since they moved to Houston around half-way through the flights, but maybe someone knows Mercury-era. But I imagine there's a lot of Gemini and Apollo-era spots.

I'd like to identify them even if not around anymore, including the street addresses.

As mentioned, I just started, so my data is really light right now. But here's the leads I have:

  1. The Singing Wheel: There's a post on this site about it. But does anyone know the exact street address?

  2. Ramada inn, Kings Inn, Nassau Bay Seville, and Nassau Bay Motor Hotel - Apparently all had good bars. The King's Inn and Nassau Bay Motor Hotel are mentioned in Roundups for various club events and dinners.

  3. The Flintlock Inn was the favorite for splash downs. It closed and later became the Old Swiss House.

  4. Marybelle's was in Kemah.
I find it interesting that motor hotels seemed to be the it places for splashdown parties.

This is all I have for now (as mentioned, in the early stages).

I might be able to help, I’ll ask a few of the MER employees that I am in contact with.

Here's another site for the list:
  • Hofbraugarten in Dickinson. It's mentioned in Gene Kranz's book.
Sadly, it's not around now either.

All times are CT (US)
