Next time you go to the Johnson Space Center, go down NASA Road 1, and take a right on State Hwy. 3. On the left, about a quarter of a mile down the highway, you'll see the Singing Wheel. A barn-like building that was the "watering hole" for all of the flight controllers, and some astronauts.

It's very old, and closed up. For the sake of history, it really needs to be restored and reopened!

I devoted Chapter 36 in my autobiography to the Singin' Wheel where I reminisced:
For us flight controllers, the Singin' Wheel was what Pancho Barnes' Happy Bottom Riding Club was to the Edwards AFB test pilots. Unfortunately, the expansion of the air base's boundaries and a fire put an end to the pilots' well-known watering hole in the early '50s..
We old Apollo Flight Controllers shoulda bought it a long time ago.

It's an honor!

I have your book, and I've read it twice.

Actually, I found it - 603 N. Commerce.

When you look it up on the map, it appears to be on the same side of Hwy 3 as the railroad tracks. The OP directions seem to be off a bit.

Source is page 16 here.

Amending my note on where exactly it was. OP's directions were in fact accurate, and the historical address I noted above was also accurate.

I contacted the City of Webster. Apparently the 609 N Commerce address was accurate back in the 1960's, but street naming changes, etc. need to be considered. Today, the exact address is 17490 HWY 3, Webster TX. The building is no longer there, and the site was redeveloped in recent years to become Cole Crossing.

So OP's note that it was on the left side is accurate (not on the same side as the tracks), when you consider you would be travelling north from NASA 1.

All times are CT (US)
