Smithsonian exhibits Apollo 11 artifacts in '50 Years from Tranquility Base'

Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 mementos are among the flown artifacts now on display as part of a new exhibit dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

The Apollo 11 "50 Years from Tranquility Base" display case was installed on Monday (March 25) at the Washington, D.C. museum, opposite its Space Race gallery on the first floor. The exhibit offers a look at almost two dozen artifacts that flew on board the July 1969 Apollo 11 mission that landed Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in the Sea of Tranquility on the surface of the moon.

Is the Contingency Soil Sampler on display really the one used by Armstrong on the lunar surface? I have never heard that it was brought back with the astronauts.

DAC movie footage of Armstrong obtaining the contingency sample shows him sticking the shaft in the soil after using it to obtain the sample. Did he or Aldrin retrieve it and bring it back with them?

On edit: I think the answer is the Contingency Soil Sampler on display was not used by Armstrong on the lunar surface. I noticed that no mission is listed in the description so it must be a training or back-up flight item.

The museum lists having three of the contingency soil samplers in its collection. None are described as having been flown.

All times are CT (US)
