NASA visitor centers launch new passport for space tourists

Earth-bound space tourists hitting the road this summer to tour NASA's historic launch pads and mission controls, as well as see the retired space shuttles on display now have their own passport.

The "Passport to Explore Space" is now being offered by the official visitor centers for NASA's nationwide facilities and the museums that display the space agency's former orbiter fleet. Guests to the 14 locations in nine states can get the passports stamped with commemorative markers representing each of the centers, earning them offers and discounts in the process.

"Get ready to explore and experience NASA's universe of diverse visitor centers and the museums which house America's four space shuttles!" promotes VisitNASA.com, the website for the "Passport to Explore Space" program and NASA's tourist attractions. "Your mission is to visit all 14 visitor centers and space shuttle locations."

Finally got mine, after signing up and forgetting to bring the confirmation email with me to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum earlier this year. I tried getting one at the Intrepid earlier, but they will not give one out without the email.

If you go to Intrepid, there's some confusion as to what they are and where they're available. The answer, as of this past weekend, is that they're at the box office (e.g., where you buy admission tickets) and so is the stamp.

There are 14 numbered spaces, two unnumbered for 16 total. However, like a real passport they place the stamp at a random spot — in my case No. 3 — although I did receive a nice, clear ink impression.

Any discounts, if they exist, are not publicized. So look at this like a fun thing, like getting stamps at the Epcot pavilions.

Anybody else who has one of these, please post where to get stamped. Prior to this weekend, they had me going from the info desk to back where the space exhibits are displayed on Intrepid to ask someone. The logical assumption would be the box office, but like the National Park Stamps, one never knows.

Next stops: Kennedy Space Center and the Udvar-Hazy. Got to figure in a trip to Goddard, Wallops and the Virginia Air & Space Center somehow.

At Udvar-Hazy you need to go to the information desk on the right as you enter through the main doors.

Be patient. Maybe awareness of these passports has changed since I visited last year, but they looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my ears when I showed them the email confirmation and the passports. After asking most of the staff at the desk, they called someone and a manager-type person arrived and knew what I was talking about and stamped the books. Everyone was very nice, they just didn't know about this program.

I like your Epcot analogy. It is very similar.

I'll be at Kennedy Space Center in October, any chance I'll get that email in time if I signed up yesterday?

The e-mail is intended to be immediately sent after registering. The NASA Visitor Center staff are investigating the issue.

I just signed up, and the email reply that I received said: "If you subscribed to the NASA Passport to Explorer Space, please allow for 24 hours for email confirmation and redemption information." We'll see how long, and if, I do receive the confirmation.

I received my confirmation email Thursday evening, so a little over 24 hours after I signed up.

Finally got my email.

It says you can forward it to someone else, I thought that was odd.

The only thing that rubs me the wrong way was in the past few years I've been to most of these centers and it might be several years (if ever) before I get back to many of them. I wish they'd had this thing about 5 years ago!

It is indeed working (again), after I sent a request for my wife through another e-mail addy. Got the confirmation email in 24 hours.

Getting mine from KSC was very easy. Just go to the info desk at the entrance.

I got mine stamped at Huntsville a few days later, they knew exactly what it was, at the desk you pay for admission.

Better still, I bumped into Hoot Gibson at Huntsville, and I had him sign my passport, right next to the most recent stamp. Score!

Udvar-Hazy wasn't using their usual passport stamp in early November... (The handwriting is from a friend who obtained the stamp.)

Also: Pier 86 where the Intrepid is located is public property so one can visit the pier (but obviously not go onto either of the ships there.) It's an odd request, and you have to go through security, but one can simply ask for a NASA passport and stamp and tell the cashiers you're there to simply visit the pier.

Udvar-Hazy still doesn't have the stamp they intially used, the one in the shape of the shuttle. Instead, they have TWO stamps: The Virginia Aviation Ambassadors stamp referred to above, as well as the Smithsonian sun with the words above and below it in a circle, "Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum / Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center."

The ladies knew what I was looking for at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center (it's at the information center just before the turnstiles) when I showed them the passport and asked where I wanted the stamp, since it's horizontal rather than square (and thus had to be placed vertically.) They tried for a nice, clean impression.

With the ticketing and security now inside a building (restored after Sandy, instead of a temporary structure on the pier), the passport stamp can now be found only by paying admission to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

It's now in the ship itself, on the hangar deck, at the information desk. Staff there knew what I was asking for, and asked where in the passport I would like the stamp.

The Intrepid staff are pretty adamant that the stamp be used only in the NASA passport. However, they acquiesced and handed me the stamp to place in another book. (They will not use it in a National Park Service passport, which is what they thought I had.)

At the Virginia Air and Space Center, where the Apollo 12 capsule is today, you can get one stamped without paying admission at the front desk (though I can't imagine anyone on this forum going that far and not going into the museum to see the capsule).

For a website with images of passport stamps, does anyone have a scan of the original Udvar-Hazy passport stamp — the outline of the shuttle with words, not the current Smithsonian sun? Thanks in advance.

Yes, thanks!

And if anyone wants to share images of the others — Goddard, Virginia Air & Space, Wallops, Great Lakes, US Space & Rocket Center, Ames, Armstrong and JPL (along with the dates you got them) — and if there was another one for the California Science Center — that would be great!

Someone at the National Parks Travelers Club's website posted, "Was at the California Science Center this past weekend, and the employees working the information desk said that they no longer have the stamp as the program has been discontinued."
