After several years of requests and planning, including help from Kennedy Space Center director and former astronaut Bob Cabana, a steel beam from one of the World Trade Center towers will be displayed outside Kennedy Space Center Fire Station 1, reports Florida Today. "To have a piece of the World Trade Center, where so many people sacrificed that day, especially in a profession that we chose to do, and to have it as a constant reminder for the future generations of younger firefighters — yeah, I think this is the right thing to do," said Dumont, a 53-year-old Port St. John resident and fireman for 34 years. The World Trade Center beam labeled Artifact No. G-0063 will be at least the fourth to grace a Brevard County fire department, with stations in Indian Harbour Beach, Rockledge and Viera also displaying pieces. Later this month, several KSC firefighters will go to a warehouse at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to formally accept the artifact from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at a ceremony. It will then begin its journey by being driven to Philadelphia where it will be shipped on an American Airlines flight to Florida. American will cover the cost; it operated the passenger jet that was the first to impact one of the Twin Towers on 9/11.Once at the fire station, it will be mounted atop two small concrete replicas of the Trade Center towers, built and donated by the same company that is building the new KSC Headquarters building. What began as a small memorial of photos and news clippings will now be a permanent tribute to the first responders who died on 9/11, and to those who work in fire rescue at KSC. It also includes a flagpole and plaque. Kennedy Space Center firefighters have established a memorial fund to help cover the costs of their 9/11 memorial and other activities honoring fallen firefighters. To contribute, visit Bring 9/11 WTC Artifact to Florida. Among the fundraising efforts for the memorial and other activities is the sale of patches, decals and medallions of a KSC fire service patch showing the Twin Towers and the Vehicle Assembly Building designed by artists and cS members Tim Gagnon and Jorge Cartes. |

I've been very fortunate to work with many people who inspire me. This was another one of those times. "It's one of those events. Think about it. You remember where you were, how you felt when you got the news, the aftermath," artist Tim Gagnon said.Gagnon said when he learned the Kennedy Space Center Fire Department was about to get an artifact from Ground Zero, he wanted to help. So he put his artistic skills to work to design images for the department to use as it prepared to place the beam in a permanent place of honor. "It'll serve as a continuous reminder of the sacrifices firefighters make," firefighter Tom Van Horn said.

The '343' in the patch designed by Tim and Jorge and in the plaque in the last photo above refers to the total FDNY firefighters lost on 9/11. | |
