NASA pilot Tom McMurtry died January 3. The first time I heard his name was when the crew of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft was announced, prior to the Enterprise Approach and Landing Tests in 1977. Left to right are: Tom McMurtry, co-pilot; Fitz Fulton, pilot; and Vic Horton, flight engineer. Later JSC engineer Skip Guidry was added to the crew. |

Great picture Ed. Thanks.I really like seeing pictures of the not-so-well known participants of our various space programs (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Shuttle)than those of the more famous (astronauts, flight directors etc.). Any chance of seeing any lunar scientists and geologists from NASA or JPL, or mid-to-lower level Apollo engineers in the future? |

Why the crew of 747 was not formed by Astronauts? |

Probably because flying experimental planes and/or fighter type is not conducive to keeping wings on heavy a/c as the yanking and banking is a hard transition to overcome!

To answer poster carmelo's question in part; two astronauts have flown the 747 SCA during their careers at NASA. C. Gordon Fullerton flew them 98 times while an active astronaut and later as a research pilot at then - NASA Dryden, and Dick Scobee 29 times before his death. |
