This photo of Gemini 3 command pilot Gus Grissom was taken half a century ago. He is holding up a certificate that proclaims that on the 30th day of January 1965 he was appointed to the rank of colonel in the Confederate Air Force.

For those aviation-minded, the group that issued Grissom the certificate is now called the Commemorative Air Force, founded in 1957 and comprising vintage World War 2-era planes maintained at its base in Texas and in other affiliated 'wings' in other states and four countries. It puts on a large impressive airshow each year, and will soon move to larger space for its planes and museum to Dallas.

Very cool photo. Note the Gemini instrumentation layout on the wall behind him.

Wonderful picture Ed. Grissom was one of those astronauts who added so much to any endeavor of which he was a part.
