To mark the end of the Space Shuttle program, I selected a series of photos showing two orbiters in one shot. This is the final in the series.

Sunlight spotlights space shuttle Atlantis (foreground) and space shuttle Endeavour on Launch Pads 39A and 39B, respectively, at KSC. This photo was taken on April 18, 2009, and marked the final time two shuttles were on launch pads at the same time. Endeavour was being prepared for a possible rescue mission following Atlantis' launch on the STS-125 mission to service NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

The final in the series? Actually, there exists a photo of Atlantis' liftoff on 51J (OK, barely visible), with Enterprise in the foreground.

Thank you for sharing these photos with us Ed. I look forward to your space history photo of the week each week. Keep up the great work.

Sad to think this was the last time that two space shuttles were on the pads together.

All times are CT (US)
