Forty years ago today, the Apollo 11 command and service modules (CSM-107) were in the Kennedy Space Center's Manned Spacecraft Operations Building. The spacecraft was being mated with its Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapter (SLA) containing lunar module LM-5 in preparation for rollout to the launch pad.

Regarding the size of the CM, you're right, that's always a shocker for kids (and adults) when I show them a Saturn V model and break it down as the mission progresses, until there's only this little teeney bit that comes back home!

Still, compared to Mercury & Gemini, the Apollo looks much larger. And, of course, the Space Shuttle is like a giant.

Great photo and very insightful.
