Can anybody tell me, when NASA selected the original astronauts, did any of the third batch who were selected (the 14) take part in either of the first two rounds of selection, and equally, did any of the new nine try to qualify for the original seven?

Yes some astronauts did apply for the first group in 1959. Here is the list:
  • Lt. Peter Conrad, USN.
  • Captain Edward Givens, JR, USAF
  • Lt. Cdr. James lovell, Jr, USN
Group 1 was selected on April 9, 1959. For Group 2, which was selected on September 17, 1962 (Tom Stafford's birthdate), is:
  • Lt. Alan Bean, USN.
  • Captain Mike Collins, USAF.
  • Lt. Richard Gordon, Jr, USN
  • Jack Swigert, civilian
For Group 3, which was selected on October 17, 1963, the following applied:
  • Vance Brand, civilian
  • Lt. Cdr. Ron Evans, USN.
  • Major Jim Irwin, USAF
  • Jack Swigert, civilian
I have the complete list of applicants for each group.

I've always been curious as to why Ed Givens sat out the Group 2 and 3 selections. He obviously wanted the job.

For a comprehensive history of the selection of Groups 1, 2 and 3, you might like to find copies of my two older books, "Selecting the Mercury Seven" and "Moon Bound."

In the first book I not only reveal for the first time the names of the 32 final candidates but give background details on each of them. The second book covers the selection of Groups 2 and 3, and once I again I give comprehensive background details of every finalist.
